Although CBS' series and movies have slipped a bit this season, the network is still leading and appears headed for its sixth consecutive prime-time victory. This, the first story in a three-part series on the 1984-85 season, explains why.

By FRED ROTHENBERG AP Television Writer NEW YORK (AP) You can count on CBS, the button-down collar, pinstriped network that, year after year, never goes out of style. CBS won't be accused of being trendy, flashy or particularly innovative. But it has no peer at defining and then refining the public's TV tastes. CBS was late getting into the minise-ries business, but this year, with long-form broadcasts so attractive, CBS has a record 46 hours of special-event programming. CBS was not the first network to try prime-time soap operas, but this season "Dallas," "Falcon Crest" and "Knots Landing" are among the 15 highest-rated programs.

And this season, when CBS saw signs of age in its long-standing Sunday programming, the network initiated a cautious, two-step rescue plan to repair a leaky lineup well before it reached the washout stage. First, "Murder, She Wrote," introduced in September, proved it could hold the sophisticated "60 Minutes" audience. Then CBS decided it could replace its long-running "The Jeffer-sons" and "Alice," with "Crazy Like a Fox," CBS' best-testing new series, which was waiting in the wings for an opening. "Crazy Like a Fox" starts Dec. 30.

"The reason we got to a position of strength is that we took some risks, some prudent risks," said Harvey Shephard, senior vice president of CBS Entertainment. He and CBS Entertainment President Bud Grant have been the management team since 1980. what amounts to a generation for this industry. "CBS is basically doing what CBS has always been doing well," said Bob Igiel, senior vice president of the NW Ayer ad vertising agency. The new Sunday strategy marked a switch from middle-brow comedy to drama geared for the "suburban, more sophisticated, upper socioeconomic audiences," said Dave Poltrack, CBS' vice president for research.

That audience had been watching "60 Minutes," then tuning out the comedies. "Murder, She Wrote" stopped some of the defection at 8 o'clock, and CBS hopes "Crazy Like a Fox" will stop more at 9. CBS, dubbed the "Tiffany Network" by an appreciative industry, is clearly headed for its sixth consecutive first-place finish in the TV season's prime-time rankings. CBS leads in total households and has the largest adult audience, although the network's viewers skew heavily toward the 50-plus age group. "We still feel we offer the advertiser more," said Poltrack.

"We have more women between the ages of 35 and 49, and they're the biggest consumers." As the season approaches the halfway point, CBS' series are several ratings points ahead of the competition and appears to be in a strong position with these miniseries set for 1985 broadcast: "Rob ert Kennedy and His Times" in January, the "Atlanta Child Murders" in February, "Space" in April and "Christopher Columbus" in May. With fewer holes to fill, CBS introduced only five new programs this fall and has prospered even though just one of them, "Murder, She Wrote," became a hit. "Dreams" was canceled, "E.R." and "Charles in Charge" are surviving weakly, and "Cover Up" is a moderate! success on Saturday night. Shephard said his Monday night lineup, which includes "Kate Allie" and "Cag-ney Lacey," aims for the sophisticated female viewer and away from the male-oriented competition of ABC's "Monday Night Football." CBS is still selective about jumping on bandwagons. For example, CBS began the season as the only network without a certain programming fad that is fading fast.

"I'm proud," said Poltrack, "that the blooper show never reached the pilot stage at CBS." Railway and South of the South boundary line of By LINDA DEUTSCH Associated Press Writer "BEVERLY HILLS COP" has the season's winning recipe for a successful movie comedy: one hot star named Eddie Murphy, a bubbling script that spoofs Beverly Hills' big-bucks lifestyle and a sprinkle of choice supporting actors. The result is a satisfying sugarplum for Christmas moviegoers. The laughs are fast and frequent.

Murphy, who captivated audiences in "48 Hours" and "Trading Places" is better than ever. The script, which is secondary to Murphy's performance, finds our hero stirring up trouble as an unlikely Detroit police detective named Alex Foley. When his old buddy is murdered, Alex's boss not only refuses to put him on the case but sends him on vacation. Alex, determined to solve the crime himself, tracks his friend's path to Beverly Hills, and that's when the fun starts. In well worn jeans and wind-breaker, he starts his sojourn by getting arrested.

"Gee, this is the nicest, cleanest police car I've ever been in," he tells Beverly Hills' finest on the way to the station. "It's better than my apartment." Thus begins a series of encounters juxtaposing the Murphy character's gritty, street-smart "chutzpah" with the slick, polite exteriors of Beverly Hills. Every viewer will have a favorite scene. There's Murphy checking into a posh hotel, intimidating the manager by palming himself off as a journalist in town to interview Michael Jackson. There's Murphy playing cat and mouse with two real -Beverly Hills cops assigned to watch him, sending room service deliveries to their stakeout car.

There's rag-tag Murphy driving his massively dented jalopy into a posh country club, instructing the valets to be careful "all this happened (the) last time I was here." The continuing joke is Murphy's outrageous self-confidence, his ability to invent preposterous lies on the spur of the moment and his thoroughly engaging personality. When he tells his two friendly enemies, the Beverly Hills cops, "You 1 NT I I I November 20.27, 1984 December 4, 11, 1984 FIFTH JUDICIAL DISTRICT COURT COUNTY OF EDDY STATE OF NEW MEXICO NO.CV84-125-W MORTGAGE INVESTMENT COMPA-'-NY OF EL PASO, TEXAS, a Texas corporation, Plaintiff vs KAYE J.
