MONDAY EVENING, AUGUST 27, 1956 BKIblOL WURifck and LtVliiOWN IIMfc5 Housewife Saves Train In Old Ford FORT FRANCES, 30-year-old housewife who herded a battered 1929 Ford over seven miles of back dirt road to warn an oncoming train of a wreck in its path was credited with averting a major disaster. Mrs. Mel Watson, wife of a power dam attendant at Calm Lake, received a frantic phone call from a Canadian National Railways operator at Fort Frances. He told her of the derailment of a 51-car freight train near Atikokan, 75 miles west of here. The operator said another train was coming up the tracks, but he could not locate the part-time operator at Flanders, 19 miles west of the accident, to stop the onrushing train.

The signal system had been damaged by one of the derailed Mrs. Watson jumped into her old car and drove it over the winding dirt road to Flanders, where she contacted off-duty operator Charles Walmsey just as the train roared down the tracks. Walmsey rushed to the station and flagged it down. In addition to these annual pleas for safer holidays, PMTA is actively engaged in a program in the public interest against truck speed, noise and smoke.

Over 60 per cent of students at public and private institutions of higher education earn on the average of $413 during the school year. This estimate is based on a recently completed U.S.

Office of Education survey reported ex clusively by NEA Service. The figures were compiled by Dr. Ernest V. Hollis, Director of College and University ministration at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. £or over a year he has been collecting data based on the budgets of 15,000 typical dents at 140 colleges and universities in 40 states and the Distriet of Columbia.

college student today is so says Hollis. like his dad willing to slug it out to stay in-school. jobs men and women in college undertake range from baby-sitting to bartending. They offer their services as maids, models and make-up As they have done for years In the students will sell sandwiches and run laundry concessions. Many will be paid directly by colleges to wash dishes, wait on tables, make beds, clean buildings and assist staff members in laboratories and offices.

Significantly, the study by Hollis shows that one-fifth of those students whose families have incomes of $25,000 or above take on jobs. They receive, on the average, $325. On the other hand, two-thirds of the students from low income families report they have jobs which pay about $400. Dr. Hollis points out, however, that the student from the wealthy family generally spends his money for luxury items such as a secondhand car or a hi-fi set.

The poorer student must put his earnings towards room, board, books and tuition fees. The study further indicates that two-thirds of the men at college have some kind of job and earn on the average of $486. Just over half the women reported they work, and their average pay for the school year comes to $265. Citing one example, Dr. Hollis says that 50 per cent of the students at Stanford University in California have part- time jobs.

As a result of this work, four per cent of them make enough to cover 70 to 100 per cent of their college expenses. Eleven per cent are able to earn 30 to 70 per cent of their costs. Officials at the University of Maryland near here estimate that well over half the student body will be working during the school term. know that 20 per cent of them are working on the says Geary Eppley, Dean of Men. more than that will be taking on off-campus Asthma Formula Prescribed Most By Doctors-Available Now Without Prescription Stops Attacks in Relief Lasts for Hours!
