rOVKTUM BLYTHXVILLB (ARK.) COURIIS NBWt NOV. Adm. Slandley Takes Stand at Atrocity Hearing Committee Massacre Qf 15,000 Poles By SUSSEM, BRINFJ! WASHINGTON HI Adm. William Standley, former ambassador to Moscow, tells House Investigators today how Soviet Russia began building 'an arc of pro-Communist stales around Eastern Europe in 1943. The admiral heads a top-level group of witnesses appearing he- fore a special committee investigating the massacre of 15,000 Polish officers and Intellectuals at Katyn Forest, Western Russia, In World War II.

The committee has reported to Congress that Russian secret police committed the murders to prepare for a pro-Communist Poland. It is now trying to determine whether news of Russian guilt was suppressed by American officials to avoid disrupting wartime relations with the Soviets. Sfandley, ambassador to Moscow from 1SM1 to 1343, reported In a series of secret documents that Russia was preparing the corridor of barrier states now behind the Iron Curtain. His story backgrounds a two-year effort by Polish officials to locate their officers in Soviet prison camps. The committee says they were killed. In the spring of 1940.

Moscow claims they were murdered by the Nazis a year later. Sumner Welles, former under secretary of state, also has been summoned for further testimony on diplomatic developments In the closing years of the war. Committee officials say Welles was aware that Moscow used the furor over discovery of the Katyn massacre in 104? as a' pretext for breaking relations with the Polish govern- inent-in-exile In order.to set up a pro-Communist regime in Poland. LOWSV1LIE, Iff. 1849 Distributed by Moon Distributing Littlt Rock, Arlc. By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD Wl Want to jnow the Ip unhandsoinest actors Hollywood? They're Broderlck Crawford, encer JOM Ferrer, Hum- xrey Bogart, Charles Laughton, Illlam Bendix, Paul Douglas, arlon Brando, James Cagney and obert Ryan. Who picked them? A frank fellow, this Crawford. These guys all have ugly mugs, yself Included," he admitted.

"I on't mean we have the kind a face that would scare children. ut we're sure as heck ugly when ou compare us to the pretty-boy ctor In past screen history, "And you know lad. Tho guyi with'ugly mugs re working. And lots of the pretty oys aren't around much any more. remember one who was hot as pistol when I came back to pic from the Army.

I see that oy on television now and whole irung seems to work in cycleji. Back In the silent days, Ihe flappers longed for the sleek Latin lovers like Rudolph Valentino, Ramon Novarro and Antonio Moreno. Then came the realism of the depression with mugs like James Cagney, Pat O'Brien and Edward O. Robinson. Even Clark Gable was a departure from the usual handsome leading man.

Back to Handsome Then the trend switched back to handsome heartbeats like Tyrone Power and Robert Taylor. "Now we're back to the mugs remarked Crawford. "Pic- lures are more realistic. The European pictures helped bring that. You see movies from Italy and England and all the actors look like real people.

"I'm not knocking the handsome guys. Lord knows, there's a place for them in this business, too. I'd look klnda silly trying to play In But I think it's Just as silly for Tyrone Power to come down a Western street with both guns blazing or to take on Jlsts." For that reason, he suggested change In current picture, "Posse." He was supposed to have a knock-down tight with John Derek. Crawford proposed changing the battle to one with Derek's sidekick, played by Charles Bickford. John's good actor, but he probably weighs 160 pounds dripping wet," said Crawford.

"I'd look silly fighting 1 The actor added that being ugly Is career Insurance. The matinee idol slarte to fall from fame when his Jowls start to sag, but the actor with a homely pan can slip gracefully Into character parts. Crawford mused: "You know, Humphrey Bogart Is an old pal of we played Ln slock together. And every once In a while we get together over a scotch and water or a martini and one of us says, 'Whatever happened to handsome Harry And then we have another, drink arid thank heaven that we're both ugly."
