Clair Saints bolstered their men's basketball roster with a couple of local high school all stars. The Saints announced that Amherst point guard Max Reiner and Herman shooting guard Trevelle Blythe will join the program this fall. Head coach Matt Devin described Reiner as "one of the biggest recruits we have been able to bring into the fold." Reiner won the coveted Mr. Basketball award for WECS-SAA's Tier I this past season. He won the same award for the 2012-13 season when the Generals played in Tier IL "His ability to handle the ball and distribute is really what drew him to us, especially since we had guys playing out of position there last year," Devin said.

Blythe averaged 15 points a game for the Green Griffins and was a Tier I first-team all-star last season. "He can shoot it," Devin said. "That's something we were looking to add." The Saints posted an 11-7 record in the OCAA's West Division last season which tied them for fourth in the conference. They lost their playoff qualifying game to Durham College. CHL awards Belle River's Aaron Ekblad and Windsor's D.J.

Smith are both nominated for Canadian Hockey League awards, which will be presented Saturday in London. The 18-year-old Ekblad, who plays for the Barrie Colts, is the Ontario Hockey League nominee for the CHL's defenceman of the year. Ekblad is the first Essex County to play to win the OHL award after putting up career highs in goals (23), assists (30) points (53) and penalty minutes (91) in 58 games in his third season in the league. Val-d'Or's Guillaume Gelinas and Portland's Derrick Pouliot are the other two nominees for the award. "July Savings Golf Packages!" Former Brescacin, Whonder sign free-agent contracts JIM PARKER The Windsor Star A pair of the University of Windsor Lancers football products stand as examples that you don't need to be selected in the Canadian Football League Draft to make it as a pro. Receiver Jordan Brescacin signed a free-agent contract with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers while linebacker Akeem Whonder inked a free-agent deal with the Calgary Stam-peders.

For the 24-year-old Whonder, the deal has helped him forget the horrible way he felt after not being taken in last year's CFL Draft "It was depressing and the worst part was I felt like I was left behind," said the five-foot-11, 221-pound who was a second-team OUA all-star in 2013. "I felt like I was one of the good players left behind and was an outcast. "I had to go back to school, and I didn't mind because I love Windsor, but my plan was going to the CFL. That was my end game and I started to doubt myself." a second chance and a second crack. (Winnipeg) has a new coaching staff, which everyone seems to be excited about.

The head coach (Mike O'Shea) played at Guelph, their general manager (Kyle Walters) coached at Guelph and their special teams coach (Pat Trac-ey) coached at Queen's. So, it's good to go to a place where they have strong ties to the CIS." Winnipeg's rookie camp starts Wednesdasy and the main camp is June 1. Brescacin has been spending his time working out with Whonder and former teammates Matt McGarva, who is with the B.C. Lions, and Evan Pszczonak, who was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts. "I just want to make sure I'm in the best shape," said Whonder, who is attending teachers college.

Having seen former teammates Seamus Postuma and Matt Bucknor get a chance at the CFL without being drafted, Whonder knows a player can still control his own destiny "Matt Bucknor missed his draft year and that story keeps me going," Whonder said. "When I was done (with the Lancers), my first thought was, 'How can I keep playing "You always keep your belief that it's never done until you say it's done." jparkerwindsorstar.com or Twitter winstarparker DAN JANISSEThe Windsor Star Ex-Lancers Akeem Whonder, left, and Jordan Brescacin take a break at the University of Windsor varsity room. The OUA's all-time reception leader, the six-foot-four, 185-pound Brescacin spent last year in Finland before getting another shot at the CFL.

"It was awesome," said Brescacin, who is a St. Anne high school product. "I went out and played in Europe last summer and when I got back I got in touch with a new agent and he got the ball rolling right away "I didn't have to wait around too much and it's good to get One of the players Whonder saw move on was Brescacin, who had a free agent deal with Hamilton last year, but was let go when a new coaching staff was put in place. "That was the tough part about it," the 25-year-old Brescacin said. "It was about a week before camp and they just sort of said, 'We don't' want you I knew Drew (Alle-mang, who is Hamilton's director of Canadian scouting) felt strongly about me, but at the end of the day it's the coaching staff that makes the decision.
