The meeting which was composed mainly of Ward Six ratepayers was sympathetic toward the boring of test wells but would record no opinion. W.

O. Wallace of the Board of Trade was In the chair. Councillor E. C. Warren, Ward Two, said that the situation facing Saanich was either the development of a reservoir at cost of $500,000, or sinking test wells at cost of $5,000.

Councillor L. C. Hagan, Ward Six, declared that the cost of a test bore was to be taken out of water profits, and he as an outer ward man had nothing against it Councillor A. G. Lamhrick objected to the well system because thought the water would be hard.

The quality of the water was more important than price anything else. He thought that there could be more co operation between Saanich and Victoria over the water question. ADDITIONAL CHARGE Councillor G. A. Austin clarified a misstatement which had been made with regard to the increased water price.

He said that nobody In Saanich knew until the end of 1937 that the city was making the additional charge of 2.27 cents per 1,000 gallons of water from April 1, 1936, when the old agreement expired. The first bill which the council received was for $973. Subsequently it was found to be a mistake and should have been $9,735 for the extra amount to November 30, 1937. Councillor Austin declared that stood squarely behind Councillor Warren in the scheme for sinking test wells. Councillor Warren traced the history of water in Saanich.

As each new agreement came up, the city had put up the price. Saanich had sent its clerk and engineer to Interview the city with regard to the latest increase and they had not been at all satisfied. The municipality had then sent the engineer and accountant to the United States to investigate the well systems. A favorable report was returned. At the cost of his expenses, R.

Strasser, a well borer, had been brought to Saanich. Though he had made no promises, he had felt the municipality was in a favorable position and might expect underground water. COUNCILLOR BREAKS Councillor Warren said the council decided to put down a test well. Up to then the council had been unanimous on the water question but at that time one member broke away and suggested meeting the city again. In consequence the whole question had been laid on tne table for the Incoming council.

Wells might go anywhere from 200 to 600 feet. The cost of a well was $4 a foot for the first 500 feet and $5 a foot for the next 100 feet. Underground water was high purity, Councillor Warren sa'd, for the earth served as a filter. Wells could be drilled close to points of distribution. Councillor Warren drew attention to the number of cities In the United SHAVES Ki A ii nil 1 1 VJtT Yr mi -J A' I 1 from 1 to 5 cents per 1,000 gallons at a profit.

HUDDERSFIELD TO TACKLE LEADERS (Continued from rage 11) cuit where free-scoring contests seem to "be getting more frequent Raith has scored 91 goals in 22 matches to date against 40. Oppo sition in this group is second-class. Celtic's record is 68 for, 27 against. Sticking close to major-league leaders since present campaign started, Celtic's great bid for the top berth reached its climax Christmas Day when the team hammered out an 8 to 0 decision over Kilmarnock and replaced Hearts at the top.

The Glasgow men have returned victories in their last five games and today have a one-point advantage over their Edinburgh rivals. Beaten 4 to 2 in last Saturday's feature attraction by Celtic, Hearts play in Glasgow this week-end against Partick Thistle. The Thistles are placed within the first 10 and can be counted on to give the Tynecastle Park squad a great battle. The third-place Falkirk entry has a comparatively "soft" match at home against Clyde. The shipbuilders are in a last-from-the-end tie with Ayr United and Kilmarnock.

Ayr entertains the bottom-place Morton outfit and Kilmarnock plays Motherwell, erstwhile leader. Glasgow Rangers, whose two- game year-ena noiiaay programme set them back with two successive defeats, goes to St. Mirren tomorrow. Third Lanark entertains Arbroath, Hamilton Academicals play at Dundee, Queen's Park visit St Johnstone and Hibernians and Queen of South meet on the former's ground. In second league warfare Raith is visited by Dunfermline, while East Fife, runner-up, is at nome to St Bernards.

SPORTS MIRROR (Continued from Page 11) began one of the episodes which most endeared him to the British public his partnership with Sir Harry Wernher's colt Brown Jack. "Steve and Brown Jack" became a "gag" as time and again the combination scored. The pair monopolized the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Newmarket winning it for six successive years, the last time when Brown Jack was 10 years old.

Brown Jack was Steve's favorite mount and after the horse was retired BRITISH FILM AT DOMINION Strong Cast in "Farewell Again," Erich production, opening Today "Farewell Again," the second Erich Pommer production to be made at the Denham Studios, and formerly known as "Troop ship," comes to the Dominion Theatre today. Many of the exterior sequences of this picture were secured by cameramen who sailed In the troopship Somersetshire to the Near East. Well-known names in the ex ceptionally strong cast include Leslie Banks and Flora Robson, fresh from magnificent performances in Erich Pommer's first production, "Fire Over England." Other artists are Sebastian Shaw, who played opposite Miriam Hop kins in "Men Are Not Patricia Hllliard, who has been in the cast of "Call It a Day" on the London stage during the whole of its long run; Robert Cochran, Leonora Corbett, An thony Bushell and Robert Newton. The story, based on an actual news item, shows a regiment of soldiers returning from several years' service abroad. Nearing Southampton they receive orders to proceed to anoher part of the Empire.

This allows the men only six hours' leave ashore be-for3 sailing away again for an Indefinite period. With the exception of a few shots taken during the call at Southampton, the entire action of the picture takes place on board the troopship. PLAZA THEATRE During his career on the stage George Walcott 26-year-old actor who is currently playing Barbara Stanwyck's brother in the Samuel Goldwyn film production, "Stella Dallas," at the Plaza Theatre, has appeared as an English schoolboy; a shell-shocked war veteran, a crippled newsboy, a Long Island social' lion, a gangster and a reformed ex-gangster. COLUMBIA THEATRE With most of the action taking place in the open rangeland, scenes for George O'Brien's new RKO Radio western, "Hollywood Cowboy," George A. Hirliman production now at the Columbia, were filmed in the vicinity of Lone Pine in 4he High Sierras.

Here a rugged valley nestling beneath the awe-inspiring snow capped mountains provides the background for much of the action and serves to enrich the film scenically, MAYORSMEET WITH DEFEAT VANCOUVER (CP) Five mainland British Columbia cities elected their mayors Thursday and many more voted for candi' dates for various civic offices. The cast which does so much to make "The Barrier" a memor able picture is headed by Leo Carrillo, Jean Parker, James Ellison, Otto Kruger, Robert Bar-rat, Andy Clyde and Sara Haden.

Carrillo has one of the finest roles of his picture career as Poleon the sturdy and loyal French-Canadian trapper who is possessed by an inarticulate love for Miss Parker, while Kruger and Barrat both are superb in their character parts. Kruger is the suave villain of the film, while Barrat is Miss Parker's father. "True Confession" Capitol Booking Comedy runs wild In Para-mount's latest laugh-fest, "True Confession," which, with Carole Lombard, Fred MacMurray and John Barrymore sharing co- starring honors, opens tomorrow at the Capitol Theatre. "True Confession," directed by Wesley Ruggles and adapted from the famous French play, "Mon Crime," by Louis Verneuil and Georges Berr, is the hilarious tale of a girl who'd rather lie than eat, and her straight-laced, truth-is-the-only-policy husband. This unfortunate honesty of MacMurray, playing the young husband, is the cause of his extreme poverty, which Miss Lombard, his wife, tries' to cure by getting a job.

This, however, she has to do secretly, because MacMurray feels that it would hurt his prestige if his wife were known to be working. The first day on the job, Miss Lombard walks out on her amorous boss, and almost immediately after she learns that he has been mysteriously murdered, and that she is under suspicion of having committed the murder. Igor Gorin Is Modest Artist Igor Gorin, who will sing next Monday night in the Empress Hotel, is a great singer with a great voice. In addition to this he possesses a big, generous nature and a most likable personality, but-jhe ha3 one fault he hates to talk about himself! Of course, in the case of some people this would not be a fault at all, quite the contrary, but in the case of Gorin it is really very aggravating because he has done so much that is worth talking about. For instance, he has sung important leading roles in opera in Europe without previously having been on the stage or even studied the score of an opera.
