Police Enforcing Bike Ordinance Galesburg Police officials announced Friday they would begin immediate enforcement of a city ordinance prohibiting bicyclists from riding on sidewalks in the Galesburg business district.

According to Lt. Thomas Worden, Galesburg police officers have recently received several complaints from pedestrians concerning bicycle riding on the downtown sidewalks. Violation of the ordinance can result in a $10 fine and impoundment of a bicycle for 30 days, Worden added. Police said there have been no serious accidents this year involving pedestrians and bicycles, but that the ordinance has apparently been widely nored in the past. Police patrol- serves a seat for the next guy," said Lasser, proudly pointing to his Cub backer button pinned behind the bar.

ARRIVING IN CHICAGO in 1910 as a 15-year-old Russian toy who didn't know a word of English, Lasser quickly latched onto the Cubs. Lasser lived at the corner of Wood and Polk streets, right across the street from the old Cub ballpark. He immediately became indoctrinated to the American game. "The morning after we arrived, I was asked to play ball," recalled Lasser. The memory triggered several others, including the day President William Taft visited the ball park.

"He was the biggest man I've ever seen in my life. He took up four seats I think No kidding," Lasser recalled. During the last two years, Lasser, who slightly resembles Casey Stengel, has traveled as far as Houston and Montreal to watch the Cubs play. WHY WOULD a man get involved with the extra expense of running a lottery?" "I thought it would be something my patrons would like to have," said Lasser, fingering his "I've Got Your Number" button. "It's the best thing they've done in my book.

There is no question in my mind that it's going to be a terrific help," the bartender said. "Everywhere I've gone the past two weeks, I've heard people talking about the lottery," the tavern owner said. What would you do if one of your customers won a million dollars? "I'd dron dead," Lasser dead-nanned. BUT SHOULD one of Lasser's customers win in the lottery, his remaining years would be quite lucrative. The business, which sells a winning ticket, receives a percentage of the winnings.

After all, how could a loyal Cub fan resist the lottery, after his team had a famous double-play combination ending in Chance.
