Rev. Johnson held his first quarterly conference at the A. M. E. church.

The conference was a success. Rev. C. G. Smith was at his post Sunday and preached a noble sermon, Sunday at 11 o'clock.

Private Phillips Foster Is here from France; will give a lecture Wednesday. Mrs. Davis Is here visiting Mrs. Kidd. Mr.

Frank Blackwell is still on the sick list. Mr. Jim Corthorn is still sick at his home. Mr. Garfield Wyley is here visiting Mr.

and Mrs. Chas. King, Mrs. Maud Smith is still on tho sick list. Tho Mt.

Zion Baptist church will pull oft a one hundred dollar rally on the 3rd Sunday in June. Mr. Walter Noland always has the Express when you have the money. A Big Pie Eating Contest Tuesday Jiight, Feb; 11. Mr.

Estell Brown in his famous monologue and concert program Wednesday night. A nail driving contest and sewing contest by three ladles and Mrs. Beulah Ramsey in son. Thursday night, at the Canaan Baptist church all next week. Our country store, 25 prizes given away, bottle of confetti, Miss Elliott in song.

Sunday was a high day at Canaan Baptist church, pastor Rev. Evans filled his place as usual and preached two powerful sermon. Sister Pollard, our worthy school teacher is quite a Christian worker in our community. The B. Y.

P. U. is moving along nicely. How can it fail with such a president as Rev. C.

Thomas. Sister Ida Moore is a live wire in the Sunday school. The Sunday school is at the high water mark and promises to go over the top this year. A. Currington, Sunday. Hon. Joe Tp.j lor, the father of all the Taylors was a pleasant caller on Mr. and Mrs.

Arthur and Cora Taylor Sunday. Mr. John Timothy Pugh has returned home from ramp in Virginia with an honorable discharge. Mar-rine Taylor, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Jobn Taylor was very badly burned Jan. 18th, but. is reported better. Mrs. L.

Wiggins made a flying trip to Tyler Saturday. CALTERT. Calvert, Texas, Jan. 30. Independent Baptist church, P.

R. Humber, paotor good service all day. Sunday school was up to the high weather mark, under the leadership of Superintendent J. J. Johnson with his corp of loyal teacher.

At 11:30 pastor, Humber spoke from Bth chapter of St. Mathews, thus explaining the pure heart, present, past and future deatiny. Night service iwas well attended. Rev. Reece, (white) of Waco, and brother W.

L. Mul-linx the merchant were with us in service Sunday night, also Rev. Covington occupied the pulpit and delivered an old fashion sermon. Come again Covington, also Rev. Reece and Mullinx, you are welcome.

Public collection 27.25, for education $76.00. Church of Cod. We enjoyed a good meeting on Jan. 12, with Rev. H.

T. Gill of Dallas and Rev. E. W. Powerd and Grant Portis of Calvert On Friday night Rev.

C. L. Bryant of Dallas preached a noble sermon at our church also on the street Saturday and Saturday night. On Sunday night he used for his subject, Many thoughts (were brought to every mind that listened to him, and many hearts were male to feel glad. ATHENS.

E. Ministers Council last week at Mineola. Dr. W. Hightower, Willie Davies of La Rue snd Tommie and Ruby Euells of Frankston, were here on business.

Mr. Geo. Franks and H. Strickland, W. Ewiag of Dallas were down on a few days hunt and were the guest of Mr.

A. Franks. Mr. Mosco Miller of Franteton was hero for a few days with his brother D. G.

SMITIITILLE. Smithville, Texas, Jan. 30, Mit Milton Catley and Miss Mattle L. Leonard were united in marriage last Saturday night at the home of the bride Elder R. E.

Hutchison, officiated. Mr. Sam Tolbert is very low sick with Influenza, his wife died last week, but he has not been informed of her death, also one of their little children died. Mrs. M.

Bracey is some much 2 2 proved of the Influenza. Mrs. Foder-son's children have also had the influenza, but are better at this writing. Mrs. Charity Wilson came home from Waco.

Mrs. Maggie Jones and Mrs. Jackson from St. Louis. Mrs.

Lillle Glenn of Forney visited her daughter, Mrs. Prior last week. Mrs. Hattie Thomas who has been visiting Mrs. Lucy Carter left Saturday for Taylor.

Miss Katy Quilla, who has been visiting Misses Alma and Ella St. Clair left last Saturday for Houston. The first quarterly conference at St. Paul A. M.

E. church last Saturday and Sunday was one among the best held for many quarters. Elder J. V. B.

Goins preached two soul stirring sermons. Elder Tom Patrldgo, P. of Winchester preached in the afternoon. Elder Hutchison has things well In hand and has lined up for a year's drive. Elder Dudley, P.

of the M. E. church also worshipped with us. Elder A. Denman, P.

of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist church was at his post Sunday. Miss Moiine and Nana Ross Ecles who have been living with their sister and brother-inlaw. Rev. and Mrs.

R. E. Hutchison for the last few months left Tuesday for Waco and Grandviow. Mrs. S.

U. O. O. gave its annual public entertainment at the hall on the 23. Owing to unfavorable weather it had been postponed.

With Mr. R. H. Durham as master of ceremonies. After the program coffee, chocolate and cakes were served.

On the 20th a meeting for men was called to meet at the First Baptist church by Rev. Harris, for the purpose of discussing matters of interest to the citizens. The one receiving the most discussion related to conditions at the cemetery. The meeting adjourned to meet at a later date at the same place. Mr.

Robt. Stewart of Sherman Is visiting his sister, Mrs. Ora Carroll and is on the sick list, due from a relapse of the influenza. Dr. Hunter of Marlin stopped over for a few hours to visit, Mrs.

Watkins. Mrs. Broxton of Han-ibal, and sister of Mrs. Prof. Jackson is in the city.

Mr. white man fell dead here last Sunday. He conducted a meat market for a number of years and is said to have treated all customers with the same courtesy. Bethel welcomed 'the following visitors at morning service: Mrs. E.

Broxton, Mrs. Elnora Owens, Dr. Hunter, Mr. Phillipps and Mrs. Littleton.

Mr. James Reynolds is on the sick list. Services at Bethel, were well attended last Sunday, Rev. McDade will preach for one month a series of sermons on the church. The was preached last Sunday, subject, "Christian Warfare." The text was 2nd Cor.

Groesbeck, Texas, Jan 30.y-The death angel has visited our town again and claimed Miss Edward Tal-ton for his victim. Miss E.iarard took seriously sick on the 19, death came on the morning of the 26th. She leaves a mother and father and 4 'sisters and one brother and a number of friends to mourn her loss. Service was estra good at Head Branch Baptist church Sunday night, Rev. Pitrson preached a noble sermon after which the Lord's supper was given.

We hope to make this year count for Christ in Groesbeck. The Dallas Express will be found at William's cafe every Saturday. The Hill County mob has put all of us on a wonder what will, happen net. It has stirred the minds of all the Colored people in Texas. LONGYIEW.

The body of Mrs. Abbie Griffin was shipped here, from Ft. Worth, for burial. Miss Alberta Ford of Pittsburg is vlplting here, the guest of Mrs. Z.

T. Leroy. Mrs. Alnieda McAlester and little son of Marshall, are visiting their mother, Mrs. Grove.

Mrs. Willis Hall is visiting relatives in Carthage. The visited the southside city school on the 21 inst. and found that Prof. S.

S. Willis and teachers had their school work well in hand. Mm Aubra Hall was called to Okmulgee, on tho account of the death of Rev. A. P.

Cooksy preached at Galilee Baptist church Sunday evening at 3 p. it Is reported that a great moeting was. had. Mr. Gold Johnson and Miss Lil lian Cumble were united in matrimony on the 23rd Rev, U.

Alexander of Kilgore filled bis pulpit at Red Qak, Sunday, collection $40.00. A. large number of relatives and friends attended the funeral of Mr. Jones at Shiloh on the 27, who was killed in Forney, last week. MILFORD.

The first cuu ior a citizen mass meeting was postponed on account of rain until Tuesday night, Jan. 28. A special appeal is made to every male citizen. Less we forget, there is not a janitor In the Kelly Miller High school. Bragg Williams who was burned on the square at Hillsboro, is reported that he was the father of twelve children and not one of them has ever been to school a day in his life or to Sunday school or church one time.

The first quarterly conference of Milford Station was held Sunday. Dr. Morgan was at his best in three sermons. The feature of the organization was lady marshals: Mrs. Hal-lie Clemmons and Miss Learline Beaty.

About 75 took sacrament; $35.00 was raised. The choir consisting of 15 persons, Mrs. Johnson, dir. of Itasca visited Rev. G.

W. Burton and congregation at Mt. Moriah Baptist church. It is a young choir, but makes sweet music and does excellent singing, considering: Mr. McGinnls, the president is a high classed church man.

Social. Mr. Rob Buckingham and Mrs. Lucy Tyler were quietly married, Jan. 23.

Mr. Roger Carter and Miss Ruby Hart were married. Misses Irena Barton and Mary Lou Ross of Itasca was the guests of Mr. and Mrs. S.

H. Richardson. Mrs. Julia Tribbit is visiting her sister, Mrs. Amison.

Mr. H. W. Batie went to Dallas. Mr.

and Mrs. Leonard Johnson were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. S. W.

Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Rector entertained Wednesday night in honor of Murphy Street Christian church at Rector's parlor.

Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Rector entertained Friday night in the same honor at Rector's parlor.

The death of Mrs. Olah Mae Robinson Saturday was learned with deepest regret. The funeral was conducted Sunday morning at Mt. Aria Baptist church by Rev. L.

W. Mackey. Remains were shipped to Rockdale and laid to rest by the side of the loved ones who preceded her to the grave. She leaves a husband, two small children, two brothers and six sisters to mourn her sudden departure. Mrs.

Mary Lewis, wife of Mr. Grant Lewis, died very suddenly on the 22nd inst, after an illness of more than, a year. The remains were shipped to Austin, where the funeral rites "were held Saturday afternoon. Besides her husband she leaves many sisters and one brother. A series of entertainments arc being held in honor of Murphy St.

Christian church. Mr. and Mrs. John E. Rector entertained on the 22nd inst, and Mr.

William Bryant entertained on the 27th inst, at tnelr residence. Mr. Martin Ricks of Temple' was greeting friends herej Sunday. Mrs. Fannie Clark attended the funeral of Mrs.

M. Guy of Navasota were visitors here the past week. Mrs. Kittle AlUn of El Paso is visiting her sister, Mrs. Lucy Herring.

Mr. R. H. Robb of Thorndale was greeting friend, here Sunday. Mrs.

J. J. Warren of Rockdale and Mrs. Viola States of Galveston was here on account of the death of their sister, Mrs. O'ah Mae Robinson.

Mr. Grant. Lewis returned from Austin. Mrs. LillUn Gillead and baby daughter left for their home in Ft.

Worth, after visiting her mother, Mrs. Sallie Adams. Madams Jennie Moore, Rosa Lewis, Carolyn James, Caldonia Touchette and Mr. Chas Black, relatives of Mrs. Mary Lewis deceased are in the city.

Misses M. E. Wright and Maggie Butler who teaches at Coupland vialted home folks Sunday. Mr. George Williams of Temple is visiting the family of Mr.
