''You don't have to get up, mornings, and you don't have to KO to school, and wash, and all that blame foolishness. You see a pirate don't have to do anything, Joe, when he's ashore." And that tells the story of tho four sons of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Stone of Dayton who embarked on a trip down the Sacramento river in search of adventure and to escape hoeing thistles and washing behind the ears. The four lads, ranging in ages from 16 to five years decided they would see the world and chose Sacramento as the place to start.

The older brothers, Lawrence and Ellis, provisioned a boat and started from Ord's Ferry, knowing nothing of the plans of the younger two to follow them. Later discovering they were pur-Sued by the younger members of the family they fished Thomas, 9, and Billy, 5, from a whirlpool where they were endeavoring to man their boat. The fact that the abandoned boat was found near Butte City on a bar, only added to the anxiety of the searchers who spent a frantic four days before Captain George Rogers of the river boat Dover, reported having seen four boys camped along the river. The adventure came to an abrupt end Sunday when the father with W. H.

Baber, superintendent of (he Parrot Grant, sud-dently walked into the camp about half a mile from Colusa. The adventure is ended and once more there are ears to be washed and thistles to hoe. The Greek mathematician who claimed to have "the wisdom of all the ages," and who urged youth to study "math," really knew his stuff. So thinks p'lorian Cajori, pro fessor of the history of rnatlie-matics at the University of Call fornia, whose collection of the testimony of thinkers of history concerning mathematics has been called to tho, attention of the 'state department of education.

Starting with Greece of the fifth century and ending with twentieth century Indianapolis, the survey shows that of 731 persons quoted, 603 of them favored mathematics as valuable mental training. This list includes not only such mathematicians as Isaac Newton, Barlow, Sylvester and Whitehead and physicists such as Tyndall and Hemholtz strongly advocating the study, but it also is a little surprising to find on their side Martin Luther, Kant, Rousseau, J. S. Mill, Emerson, Wordsworth, Macaulay and Abraham Lincoln. Misses Louise and Gertrude Geyer of Great Falls, are visiting their aunt Mrs.
