With the turning of the first spadeful of earth at San Bruno by Burton Towne, head of the highway commission, California's dream of a splendid and. about California atui motor neuM. Gossip from th car maker. go south by either the El Camino Real1 down the peninsula to San Jose and through Castroville or from Oakland by the new state highway through Niles canyon and on down the valley via Fresno and Bakersfield. Another touring ground at present little known to motorists which the new highway system will open up is the territory included in the north coast counties up to Eureka.

The road is at present in bad enough condition to scare off the cautious ones, especially the stretch along the Russian river. A new roadbed will be made here by cutting out many of the turns and steep climbB and otherwise eliminating most of the useless and dangerous portions. The highway commission has chosen main routes with a total mileage of about 2300 miles to Which are added about 400 miles of lateral roads running out to the more isolated county seats. Motor. Dr.

W. L. Hell has ordered a new five-passenger Overland "HO" touring car from T. W. Thomson.

Luke Smith Jr. has ordered a four-passenger Overland "30" car to he delivered some time In the near future. Mr. Smith's car will be supplied with a full electric equipment. October has been a busy month among the automobile dealers of Santa Cruz, who have had a hard time keeping enough machines In stock to supply the steady demand.

Motorists more, perhaps, than any other class, will appreciate the beginning of this huge work, made possible by the $18,000,000 bond issue. Starting at the northern boundary line of the state where the main highway of Oregon ends, the state road will lead over the Siskiyou mountains and down into the valley where the motorist has the choice of the east and west side roads to San Francisco.

ALL THE TELEPHONE POLES SOUGHT TO BE REMOVED FROM MAIN STREET. SALINAS, Oct. 25. The chamber of commerce hold a very" spirited meeting last evening at which initiative stepB on several matters of vast importance to Salinas were taken. There was a large number of members present at the meeting, which was presided over by John Souza.

D. A. Madeira was appointed chairman of the committee to see about extending the cement sidewalk from Main street to the Southern Pacific depot and to make arrangements for further park improvements in that vicinity. H. B.

Burns was elected chairman of the committee 1o look into the matter of having all telephone poles removed from the sidewalks on Main street. S. liullcne was chosen for the head of the committee to make arrange ments for the placing of electroliers along Main street, and H. E. Abbott will head the committee that will confer with the electric company In regard to furnishing light for the electroliers.

To aid the city In street improvement a committee was appointed to act in unison with the city street committee in regard to these affairs, her Cornett will act as chairman of the committee. SUFFRAGE FOR ARIZONA. LOS ANGELES, Oct. 25. That womens' suffrage will carry in Arizona in the November election 1 the belief of State Senator John T.

Hughes of Tucson, who is here today. Senator Hughes, an ardent supporter of equal suffrage, believes that the granting of votes to women In California has had such a moral effect on Arizona voters that there will be practically no contest. The senator predicts that Wilson will carry Arizona with Roosevelt second, while Taft will get about ten per cent of the vote. German Women Organizing BERLIN, Oct. 25.

In the past year the number of organized women workers in the German empire has Increased eighteen per cent and is now approximately 200,000, says the annual report of Karl Legien, general secretary of the German imperial federation of trades unions. There are no labor organizations in Germany exclusively for women, but women workers are admitted on equal terms to all the men's unions. The largest union containing women is the Textile federation. Members of the Cleveland Socialist party are considering a resolution to initiate a law for an eight-hour day and a $3-a-day minimum wage for all adult workmen. EWELL SWEET APPLE CIDER.
