Do leave us in an orchard where the fruit is eternally ripe. No, not discouraged We know that the present want of confidence is not much of a storm. During the past Biz months the Governors of several of those States held a conference to consider the proposition of building a grand trunk railroad from torn point in Northern Dakota or Nebraska to Galveston or some other port on the Gulf of Mexico.

The proposition contemplated the building of the road by the States that would be benefited by it, the road 0 be owned and operated by those States. It was estimated that a tax of about five cents an acre on the farms whose produce would be transported to market on such a road would yield ample funds for its construction and equipment, and that the producers and business men w.tlV in the region which would be tributary to the road would annually save many times more than that amount in freights. Have we less senso than the barnyard fowl? If not, why should enthusiastically discussed in the belt of StateB directly interested. Of course a necessary part of such project is the establishment of ocean lines of transportation leading from the Gulf terminus of the proposed road to the great markets of the world. 1 This is clearly seen bv the projectors, and steps have just been taken to accomplish the desired result. A committee of prominent men have been appointed to confer with the representatives of European nations at the World's Fair, with the view of interesting the business men of those nations in the opening of direct commercial relations and intercourse between the West and one or more of the great European trade centers. Correspondence between the Governor of Kansas and wealthy business men and capitalists of Copenhagen has developed the fact that there is plenty of money ready to establish an ocean line of steamships between that city and the Gulf terminus of the proposed railroad.

It is plain that if these projects succeed, a great commercial metropolis will arise at the Gulf terminus of the road, and that tens of millions of dollars in freight will be saved annually by the producers of the States referred to. And, it will also follow that some of the advantages of this new avenue to the markets of the world will be reaped by California. Of course it will cost much less to carry California freights to and from the Gulf terminus of the proposed road than it does to transport them over the transcontinental roads to the Atlantic seaboard. Xf the new line is established every producer and shipper in California will reap direct and tangible benefits from it in the reduction of the cost of fretting to and from the markets of the world with his products and goods. Ono of tho most remarkable illustrations of progress in electrical appliances is electrolitic painting. Hitherto if copper or other metal had to bo deposited electrically a bath of solution whs needed. Now nil this is changed, and a ship's hull can bo plated as easily aa a spoon or a teapot.

Instead of a bath, insoluble salts, ground to a fine powder and mixed with water aro used. This mixture is painted on the metal to be plated by a fine wire brush, to which one polo of a dynamo conductor ia attached, the other pole being connected to a plato. Not only pure metal, but all sorts of alloys can be used. Exchange. What Aluminium Ia.

There are many misconceptions about aluminium that are widespread and which it seems diilicult to correct in tho public- miml. Aluminium is not, section for section, a very strong metal. It is only one-half as strong ns wrought iron. It lias a very low elaatic limit. It is not rigid, but bends under a transverse strain readily.

It is in its alloys that its utility commences to appear. With 8 to Id per cent of copper or aluminium bronze wo have ono of the most dense, finest grained and strongest metals known.
