It was our good lortune to be present at the most delightful dance given under the auspices of the Olympic Club of this city, on Friday evening of last week. It waa a foregone conclusion that the parly would be a auo-cess, on aocount of the excelleut selection of committee of arrangements, and our highest anticipations were fully realized. The ball was cool, and the floor one or the best In the oonuty, and as a consequence some sixty couples, who were present, were not deterred from having a hearty tripping of their nimble feet. A programme of eighteen dances was put through without intermission. Good music waa on hsnd to Inspire the dlsclplos of Terpsichore, and from nine o'clock to half-past one all went merry as a marrlago bell.

Bow In Tnnncl No. S. Last Saturday night another disaster befell the Chinamen of tunnol No. 3. It appeara that Patrick Dally, foreman of one end of the tunnel, had during the day discharged one of the Chinamen on aocount of being lazy, and told the Chinaman to get out of the tunnel Immediately or he would help htm out with bis boot.

The heathen accepted the first offer, and got out of the tunnel Immediately. In the evening of the same day Dally espied the Chinaman he had bounced that day, and Immediately ordered him out of the tunnel, to which the Chinamen objected, wbereupou Daily aetzed the Chinaman and threw blm down. This was a signal for a free fight, and the other Chtnamon, numbering sixteen, Immediately oame to the relief of their rallen comrade. One Chinaman threw a drill at John Ward, who was stsnding near, the drill penetrating his shirts, making a alight bruise on the breast. Ward picked up a shovel and wont for the Mongolian, smashing the side or the heathen's bead, making him toothleas.

The lights were put out, and Ward had his hands full to keep the miscreants at bay. While Ward waa thus engaged, Daily had bis Chinaman down and unmercifully thrashing him. Finally all the Chinamen that wore able to walk were driven out of the tunnol. The next morning out of the seventeen Chinamen that were engaged In the melee, only seven were found able to resume work. Daily received a severe acalp wound, probably dono with a shovel, and Ward Is badly bruised about the bead and face.

It will be remembered that Ward Is the individual who some months ago, single-handed, put to flight about a dozen or the subjects of the Flowery Kiogdoui. Klpe Oranges- In our rambles a few days ago in search of news we were Invited to cast our optica at an orange tree In the garden of the Cathollo Orphan Asylum. The tree, we are informed is about four years of age, and la planted In rich alluvial aoil, and some seven teet In height, which has on its branches nineteen most luscious oranges, of average size. The variety to which it is supposed to belong Is the Seville "or forbidden fruit," which accounts for them not being taken by the Misses attending the school, for we were Informed that not one of the oranges baa aa yet been taken from the tree, wblub can he seen by any person who may ao feel disposed. Thla we are told la the oaly Instsnce in thla vioinlty where an orange tree is known to bear ripe fruit, being as It were exposed to the severe frosts of the last two months without shade or covering.

While in the garden we could not help but admire the cheerful and happy countenances of the little orphan children. 1 Crockery Wrecker. There la a colored Individual board ing and lodging in Sylvar's calaboose, William Jaokson by name, who claims that hi dignity and good nature were trampled on and abused lu the last issue cf the Sentinel, where it seems wo made it appear that he waa in durance Tile and boarding at the oounty'a expense for the heinous crlmo of petty larceny. We were mistaken and hasten to correct the error with all due respect for our oolored friend. He says he la no thief, never stole anything in his lire, mind that! He ssys further that his profession Is a cook, and in that capacity be worked In Moody's Hotel, watsonvtue, ano one uay tie got considerably anaked with whiskey, came back to the hotel, and amused himself witb breaking the crockery of the botel.and for whioh be was required to accompany a Deputy Sheriff to the Santa Crua jail, aud there to remain ninety days.

A citation baa been Issued to aald executors requiring theoi to appear aud ahow cause why tbey ahouid not be enmmttled for contempt. In refusing to obey the order uf this Court requiring them to par the family allowance to the family of said deoeaaeu. A How I From the Wilderness. Ed. Sentinel: What has become or my dear friend aud prototype, my patron saint, "Soreno," who erst spoke from the profound depths of hie uilghty genius In a loud "Voice from Watsonvllle." It occurred to me some time ago that It was a fortunate clroumstauoe that placed he and I In opposite ends of the county.

Now, ir ho bus 11 gone up the spout we will lose our balance sure, and my weighty Intellect will sink this end. Come, "Sereno," flee away; let us preserve the equilibrium of the oounty at all hazards. We are "as happy aa clams at high water." Our august Board of School Trustees have bridged the bloody chasm with a "male teacher," and everything Is lovely. It seems like a dream but we have felt of him and can swear that he Is genuine flesh aud blood. Marob 3d he commences to teach our young Ideaa "bow to shoot." Ob, dear! I hope they won't aboot this way.

Veni, Vidi, Viet I as the flood Mid to Peery'a sawdust pile, as It went tearing down the creek last week. But Peris like to wrestle with water, you know, and the way our Perl has been trying to dam up the creek with saw-dust from his mill ever since la a caution to behold. Sawdust Is different from bread. When it la "cast upon the it don't even get away from ns, let alone return. To be sure it disappears from sight and is oarrled off by the flood, but It never geta as far as the ocean.

It aettiea In the eddies and forma bare along the river, where It ia annihilated by natural decomposition, whioh, of course, gives the water a healthy flavor. Fish and Santa Cruzana thrive on it luxuriantly. Mill-men are privileged characters; at leaat I thought so when I discovered that the highway between Lorenzo aud Feltou had been converted Into a logging-road. Skids have been laid in It and oxen have trodden it till the mud la about sixteen feet deep, more or leas. "Say, Supervisor Cunniugbsm and Roadmaaler Bowes, have you given thla road to McKoy or does the oounty own It yet? Did you ever notice that at this end of the bridge over the flume at McKoy A Hubbard's mill, that there are skids laid In the road that have been there, winter and aumtner, for years?" Oil I It is fun to go bumping over skids, wallowing through the mud and sliding Into log-ruts, down this beautiful road.

God help the luckless wight that- travela over it now-a-days. He tnay thank hie atara if be ever geta through without breaking his neck. "I feel like one who treads alone some banquet hall deserted, Whose lights have tied and garlands dead aud all but me departed," Waa the sad soliloquy of our friend Taylor, aa he stood in his saloon gazing on the tbree last bottles of soda water, and thought or the good old times before "Captain Bob Shorty" started bis temperance club. "Oh! those were good old times we had a year or two ago," wasn't they Taylor?" Last Sunday every body hero asked everybody else: "Have you seen the last Sentinel yet?" Of oourse I lelt tickled to death over the attention my maiden effort received. Every copy taken here waa read by at least a dozeu persons.

Times are too bard to take it evon with aixteen years oredit; but I intend to borrow my neighbor's copy and "pass It along" till It is worn out. See hero, "Mao," I hope you won't let Patrick plagiarize my letters and try to play them off for Courier editorials. But I guess there Is no danger; he won't have anything spicy In his paper, you know. He told his correspondents a loug time ago that if they wrote anything spicy he would scratch it out. He wanta gentlemen of the soft-solder, persuasion all over the county to soft-soap the people into taking the Courier.

"Uno" has quit soft-soaping, aud now direcia his wonderful talent to aaw-logs and socials, as well aa torn-peranoe reform. "Captain Bob Shorty" Is nothing if he Isn't noto rious. The gsy young widower from Canadee-l-o says he knows who I am; but I haven't heard anything of pistols and coffee yet. Rollins is disappointed because the trustees didu't hire a haudsome aclioolmarin, I hoar. A fellow feel ing makea me kind enough to deeply sympathize with you, Walter.

There are at least a score of us old bachel-ora who feel the same way. After a hard tussel the "Washington laus" managed to get together the other day and held their aunual election of officers. G. H. Glbbs, T.

D. Beaaley aud C. S. Sanderson were re-elected to the offices of President, Vice-President and Treasurer, re spectively, and Mrs. Emily Kelley waa chosen Secretary.

According to annual custom, last Saturday night, the 22d, we met to Install them. Lo renzo and Boulder Creek were out in full force. Winuie Crediford scraped his fiddle, Presldeut Gibbsand "Captain Bob Shorty" called, aud the way our two rival cities hob-nobbed together was beautiful to see. Oh, It was a glorious dunce! Washington stand lug In his heavenly home and gazing on the homage paid to bim by his devoted children In Santa Cruz county, must have felt particularly flattered by our celebration. Fred.

Chipuian, S. L. Potts, Joseph Jameson and Mary Saulsbury have got letters in the Boulder Creek Post-office, which they'd better call for, or tbey will be sent to the Dead Letter Office. We had a "bustln" social at Frank Glbbs', In Lorenzo, the other night. We are all going to another next Saturday night, in the Boulder Creek Hall.

The old favorite la getting along lu years pretty well, being now or the age of about sixty-seven, but he still exhibits tracea of bla former greatnoss. A goodly number attended his concert, and were much pleased thereat. By request he repeats the entertainment on Friday evening next.

A social dance waa given on Friday evening, February 21st, at Ger-mania Hall, in honor of Washington's Birthday. Good musio, pleasant company and a first-class supper, served by John Crowley at the Grand Hotel, all combined to render it a most enjoyable affair. Tbe Workingmen of tlilr plaoe held a large and enthusiastic meeting on tbe 22d ult at Germanla Hall. It Is tbe first one held in many months. The occasion of tbe meeting on that evening was to make arrangements for tbe reception of Denis Kearney, who la to apeak here on the 3d prox.

This place is the first one he will visit In bis tour through tbe State, in the Interests of the party whose President he Is. It Is undeoioea whether be will apeak Indoora or out; It will depend altogether on tne state of the weather on that day. Great preparations are being made and much pleasure anticipated. Ames aa an available" candidate for Governor. Quite right, Mr. Nut-ling; Joe ia available for anything. There la no danger of him abrinking from any position wherein there is anything. Oh! no; "Not for joe" If be knows It.

Joe Is a very puono- apirlted man In that respect; be la always ready and willing to serve hia country In any capacity, irom President down to School Trustee. He Is at the present time filling sev eral positions ot pnblio truat, viz: Mem ber of the Assembly, supervisor, Notary Public, and. I believe, Sobool Trustee. He is a live man but I am afraid that tbe onerous duties now devolving upon bim In connection with bla various offices, will pretuae all poaeibility of bis accepting tbe Gubernatorial chair, for be Is kept very busy, and yon know be never leavea any office when ono lie gets into It; he keepa It for life. What would we do, though, if tbe people do aelect bim for Governor? Who will run tbe Board of Supervisors? Who, In a word, will run tbe county? No, Purity; you must not think of leaving us; bow could you be ao un- filial? But if Joe must be Governor, why eao he not alao remain Super visor? He la Assemblyman atiu Supervisor at tbe same time.

We must prevail on him to remain with na at all hazards, though Sacramento should sluk. Will the people not try and find tbe next beat man to accept tbe Governor's position, for Purity can not no! by tbe gods, be will not be taken from our Council ball, to let ua be engulfed In perpetual ruin I Now, Mr. Nutting, don't Insist upon Joe being Governor, for blood will surely be shed before we will part with him. Knowing your great in fluence lu the politics of tbe golden State, I appeal to you not to force Joe Into the Gubernatorial chair, for be would look a gieat deal prettier In tbe Joint-Senatorial chair, and be would, I know, be satisfied with it, as tbe peoplo will be also If be geta it. In your last Issue, while perusing the communication of "Boragus," I noticed one or two mtstakea which I desire to correct.

Iu apoaklng of the town "officiate" he aaya they are all Workingmen and were all elected at the last election. This is not ao. Two of tho Trustees, viz: Messrs. Hilton aud Crowe, were hold-overs, hsvlng been elected two yeara before. "Boragus" also omitted tlx name of Frederick Whooton.

one of our prin clpal and most active Trustees, who was elected on the Worklngmen's tioket last May. I think "Boragus' must be a rural chap, for he betrays a lamentable Ignorance or Redwood City foraperaon living here. The whole tone of hla letter snows a ue- predating spirit towarda Redwood and ua rtfople, which could only emanate from a person who knows nothing about bis subject. There la no livelier little town in the State, In propor tlon to Ita advantagea, location and alze, than Redwood. It la the queen city ot the Slate.

Bridget was tbe first to lose ber temper entirely, and, Instead of putting the turnip back lo the basket, she put It against John's nose, and that pretty hard, too, which considerably staggered him.
