'Travis is very passionate for the game, and he has a quick, short and powerful swing that can deliver the ball to all fields," said Ianniello. Pitching coach Fran Rella helped Delia Volpe develop a devastating slider that increased his arsenal. Playing alongside his identical twin brother, Eric, a starting shortstop and a pitcher, also provided motivation for Delia Volpe. An intense training and strength program in the off-season helped his power numbers this season, which included 13 doubles and four triples.

The Montclair State-bound Del-la Volpe posted a 14-5 career record. He had 83 hits, including 12 home runs, and finished with 68 RBI and 74 runs. "What I'm most proud of is helping to turn the baseball program around here into a consistent County and State contender every year," said Delia Volpe. E-mail: millsnorthjersey.com By ED MILLS STAFF WRITER Travis Delia Volpe has come a long way in the past three years, from tentative and apprehensive on the pitching mound to confident and calm. From defensive and reactive in the batter's box to offensive and exceedingly proactive.

Wayne Hills' Delia Volpe made himself into one of the top pitchers and hitters in North Jersey with hard work that translated into a highly skilled performer. He batted .435 with 47 hits, seven home runs, 43 RBI and 43 runs, and had a 7-3 pitching record with 77 strikeouts in 61 innings to lead Wayne Hills to its first Passaic County baseball tournament championship since 2000 and a 20-11 record. Delia Volpe is the North Jersey Baseball Player of the Year. 'Travis is a true leader; he is quiet, but he leads by example," said Wayne Hills coach Chris Ianniello. "He's calm, cool and composed, a clutch gamer." Delia Volpe was a first baseman-outfielder on the freshman team in 2006 and struggled to find offensive consistency.

In a limited role for the varsity as a sophomore in 2007, he played right field and batted low in the order. Delia Volpe started to come into his own his junior year when he earned first-team All-Passaic recognition as a pitcher, going 7-2 with a 2.29 ERA, and posting a .558 slugging percentage with 18 RBI from the leadoff spot. He helped the Patriots go 20-9 as they advanced to the County title game. "Our main goal this year was to get back to the County finals and finish it off with a championship this time," Delia Volpe said. "I gained a lot of confidence and that experience was a big factor." That was true throughout the 2009 County tournament run for Delia Volpe, 18, a 5 -foot-10, 175-pound left-handed throwing and hitting center fielder who batted third.

He blasted a three-run home run and pitched a six-hitter to help beat crosstown rival Wayne Valley, 4-2, in the quarterfinals. He threw a seven-hitter and struck out 10 in a 7-2 semifinal win over Lakeland. CZERWINSKI STAFF WRITER PARK RIDGE The Park Ridge baseball record book looks a lot different these days, now that the 2009 Owls have put their final stamp on it. "This team did something special," said coach Pete Crandall.

"I've coached a lot of teams in different sports. Some good ones. Some very good ones. "But this team was different. This is the one that did it all." The Group 1 title, Park Ridge's first in baseball since 1977, was just the icing on the cake.

The Owls built up to that moment with a program-record 26 victories, their first back-to-back North 1, Group 1 titles and their first BCSL Olympic Division title in 11 years. Put that all together, and you have the North Jersey Baseball Team of the Year. Top 25 1. St. Joseph (27-4) 2.

Joseph pitching aces: The triumvirate of Kevin Ferguson, Rich Anastasi and Rob Frank had a job to do. There were not just three games to play, but to win in the span of 72 hours, no less and the Green Knights had little if no margin for error. They came through in a big "Things definitely went our way," said Crandall, whose team finishes No. 3 in The North Jersey Top 25. "That's what happens when you win a championship, but we made it go our way." Like any Group 1 school, the Owls didn't have a lot of depth, but they made the most of the talent at hand.

Senior ace Kevin Herget, who fired a two-hitter in the championship game against David Brearley for his ninth win of the season, was one of the best all-around players in North Jersey. Senior third baseman Matt Moreno was an All-Bergen selection, and junior catcher Matt Misley continued to be one of the top hitters in the Olympic Division. "You could tell we had the potential for something like this," Crandall said. "It was special," Moreno said. "It's the kind of team you want to be part of." game was played was the Mike Blake Invitational, established to honor the memory of Amanda's father and raise money for the Blake Children College Fund.

Blake was a former student-athlete at Northern Highlands who went on to become a well-known coach in the area. He died in September at age 47. Amanda offered up the best tribute she possibly could, excelling in the sport he loved watching her play. In an event Stapleton: Reminding us why we love high school sports From Page S-7 Amanda Blake, Northern Highlands Softball: No one showed more spirit in one game this spring than Blake did in the Highlanders' 3-0 victory over Holy Angels on April 25. She struck out nine and had a run-scoring single in the first inning, her team's lone hit all while playing despite the most emotional of circumstances.

The tournament in which the Hawthorne in the first round of the Passaic County tournament. Her solo shot then helped seal the Defenders' 4-2 triumph over Holy Family in the North Non-Public tournament the program's first. Russ Kniewel, Lakeland volleyball: This final spot is reserved for a coaching legend. For the last 25 years, few volleyball coaches have done more for a high school program than Kniewel, who has collected in excess of 750 wins in his tenure in charge of the boys and girls programs at Lakeland. He started the girls program in 1984, the boys program three years later, and while he will coach the girls for at least two more seasons, this was his final season coaching the boys.

So it's understandable why the Lancers celebrated their victory over Bergen Catholic in the State tournament last month it was their final home match with Kniewel on the sideline..
