'em By Jim Parker star sports writer DETROIT A simple handshake just wasn't going to do it for closer Todd Jones. As the Detroit Tigers lined up for their traditional post-game celebratory handshake, the burly Jones lunged at slugger Juan Gonzalez and applied the bear hug. "It was just so good to see him in the lineup," Jones said.

"He's so important to this team and there's just something about him in the lineup." Making his Comerica Park debut, Gonzalez made his first RBI as a Tiger a memorable one. He launched a Jose Mesa fastball into the gap and to the fence in right-centre in the eighth inning to drive home Shane Halter and the decisive run in a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners Thursday "I know the team feels more comfortable with me in the lineup," said Gonzalez, who watched the Tigers improve to 2-0 with him in the starting lineup. "It's just so exciting to be here and drive in the winning run." Bothered by a sore hamstring since spring training, Gonzalez played DH Thursday for his first start since opening day in Oakland. He singled for his first hit of the season in the first inning and hit the ball hard all four at-bats. But with the game on the line in the eighth inning and Halter on first base, Gonzalez said he zeroed in.

"When I go to home plate and the situation is no score or tie game, I go with a lot of concentration," Gonzalez said. "I know (Mesa) is power pitcher and (would throw a) fastball andljumpedonit." Dean Palmer drove in another run in the inning as the Tigers snapped a string of 18 innings without a run. "It's not the first run he's driven in and certainly won't be his last," Tigers catcher Brad Ausmus said. "He does add something to the lineup." Even with the offence struggling, Gonza- SATURDAY GAMES Kansas City at New York Yankees, 1:05 p.m.; Oakland at Boston, 1:05 p.m.; Texas at Cleveland, 1:05 p.m.; Tampa Bay at Detroit, 1:05 p.m.; Anaheim at Chicago White Sox, 2:05 p.m.; Seattle at Toronto, 4:05 p.m.; Baltimore at Minnesota, 7:05 p.m. Seattle Mariners' Mark McLemore, right, Is out at home plate as he collides with Detroit Tigers catcher Brad Ausmus while trying to score In the sixth Inning Thursday in Detroit.

You could see it with Ausmus throwing out a pair of runners attempting to steal in the first inning.

Ausmus hooked up with Bobby Higginson to cut down Mark McLemore in the sixth inning to keep the game scoreless. Starter Hideo Nomo extended his scoreless inning streak to 15 with six solid innings, but Doug Brocail got the win in relief and Jones the save. Brocail said he thinks Gonzalez in the lineup might be the start of something good. "Someone said he could drive in a run from the bench and I believe it," Brocail said. "You saw tonight the shot in the arm he gives us." DEVIL RAYS ACQUIRE GOODEN FROM ASTROS ST.
