He said he had been asked by the captain to go on board the boat and arrest three men. When he went to do so all wanted to be arrested, and complained of their quarters. His evidence substantiated that of the sailors in part, but the quarters he said were better than gome he had seen. The case was remanded until Monday, in order to allow additional witnesses to be brought from Chtmainus. S. Widdowson. Both are well known residents of this city, the bride having been a member of the teachers' f-taff of the Sooth Park school for many jears, while the bridegroom was especially well known among the, sporting fiaternity of the city. He was a member of the J. B.

A. A. senior crew which won the championship ef the North Pacific on several occasions. He also belonged to the Amity Baseball club. The ceremony was conducted by tbe Rev.

Leslie Clay. Miss A. Lorimer acted as bridesmaid, while the groom was supported by J. WT. Lorimer.

Personal. Itev. B. O. Freeman, missionary at Skldc-gate, Queen Charlotte Islands, arrived in tbe city a few daji ago, and Is spending a brief vacation In tbe city, as well as attending to some necessary business.

He says that the Indians are very busy at present preparing for the fishing season. The Skldegate OH Trading Company, running In connection with tbe Mission, put np good pack of oil and clams last season, and expect to be still more successful this year. The Indians ars also establishing a small salmon cannery. The post office, says Mr. freeman, nas removed from Skldegate for some time.

W. II. Dempster, however, Is going up In connection with the Oil Trading Company and will take charge of the post office In the future. When Mr. Freeman left a report had gained circulation that a party was going to Investigate the eld coal claims on Graham Island, probably with an eye to further developing them and ascertaining whether they were worth an 'nvestment.

Mr. Freeman is at tho Dominion. It. H. Alexander, manager of the Hastings Mills branch of the B.

C. M. T. T. of Vancouver, Is in the city In company with John Hendry, another lumber r.tan.

They are here for the p'irpose of Interviewing members of the provincial legislature In regard to. the lumber Industry of the province. Messrs. Chas. Wurtele, local agent of the Great Northern railway, has given notice that the company will hereafter pay all Victoria wharfage on transcontinental and Kootenay freight received over its line. Joseph E. Phillips is making a specialty of British Columbia granite in his monumental work. All the work in connection with it is done on his own premises.

The granite is of the best quality, and takes a polish equal to the b'st Nova Scotia and ScottUm. stone. The mayor this received the following telegram from Halifax: "Two sergeants of Victoria contingent arrived here O. Iv. G.

P. D' Armour." Sergt. D'Armour enlisted here in Stratheonn's, having resigned from the N. W. M.

and came down to Victoria for that purpose. D. G. S. Quadra returned to port this morning.

During her cruise the wooden beacon on Sidney spit, which was blown over by tho winter gales, was again placed in position, and Governor rock buoy, Trincomali channel, was examined, the chain eleered from the rock and the buoy cleaned and duly left in position, Cupt. Walbran reports the weather as very fair in the gulf. A choir has been inaugurated in Saauichton church with J. Palmer as choir master nnd Miss Mary Martindale as organist. About thirty members were present at the inauguration.

Mr. Palmer has recently arrived from England, and is a brother of detective Palmer of this city. The choir will practice at Saauichton church on Fridays at 7.30 p. m. All are cordially invited to attend.

St. John's church will doubtless be crowded to its capacity this evening on the occasion of the organ recital to be given by Clarence Eddy, the distinguished musician, who is paying Victoria, a brief visit while en route to Europe from South Culifornia. The progrnmnie of the concert has already been given, and its character is such, particularly when in the hands of so capable and renowned nn artist, as will ensure a treat for all listeners. Circulars have been issued notifying the public of a strike being declared at Van Anda mines, Texada, on March 2nd. The strike has been declared by the Texada I'nion of the Western Federation of Mines, owing, they say, "to the employers at the above mines having decided to work the mines by employment of Japanese for miners, engineers, and as the employers refuse to guarantee, white men's wages." The death is announced at the Jubilee hospital on Thursday of Thomas Fletcher, of Alberni.

Mr. Fletcher was well known on the West Coast, having represented Alberni in the provincial legislature for the term ending In 1891. outisequently he acted as government agent and gold commissioner for Alberni district. The news of his death will be learned with regret by all in that dis trict, where his kindly manners and obliging disposition rendered him popular with all. The funeral will take place on Saturday at 2.30 p.
