NORTH JERSEY SPORTSSCOREBOARD THE RECORD S-9 Ramsey rides defense into state semifinal By JJ CONRAD STAFF WRITER Moments after the Ramsey girls captured their second sectional soccer title in the last three years last week, the Rams' Kelly Redl mentioned a quote she had heard, and related to, in the past. "I've liked being on defense because of that saying, 'Defense wins championships, offense wins said Redl, who has pulled double duty during Ramsey's state tournament run at sweeper and forward. It's the Rams' stingy defense, coupled with just enough timely about one person, though," said Barrow, who made several key saves in Thursday's win over Pascack Hills including one on a breakaway taken by Cowgirls star Brianna Musco late in the first half with the game scoreless and one in the penalty-kick shootout. "It's just about the way the 'D' has flowed, and all of a sudden it's gotten really strong," Barrow said. "I try and make the stops when I have to, but it has a lot to do with everyone else on defense stepping up their game in this tournament." Among those who have stepped up defensively are freshmen Maddie Barrow and Meredith Edwards, and juniors Skyler Rybacki and Anna Jensen.

Maddie Barrow (seven goals, five assists) and Jensen (eight goals, eight assists) began the year as two of the Rams' better offensive weapons. "I think this team is made up of a lot of girls who can do a lot of things," coach George Wright said. "You obviously have Geeja Martone, who stands out up top, and Courtney Dadinos and Nicole Moor, but I haven't been afraid to try different girls on defense. Skyler, Anna the two freshmen they're all just great defenders who have been shutting teams down. "We built from the defense up and they've all been very solid for us.

It's been a defensive effort and it's very hard to say one girl has stood out. They all have. And Molly has seamlessly stepped in at goalie and made some huge saves for us. The defense will need to be on its game once again today when the Rams take on North 2, Group 2 champion Bernards. The Somerset County team is led by junior Montana Sutton, who has verbally committed to Virginia and has 23 goals and 12 assists this season.

Serving as the last line of defense for the Rams, Molly Barrow knows there's still work to be done. "We had a rough patch in the middle of the season," the older of the Barrow sisters said. "But now we're here and it'd be amazing to win two more games. "I was on the team two years ago when Ramsey won the Group 2 title, and everyone's just been explaining how that felt. To do it again, it'd just be amazing." GIRLS SOCCER goals, that has gotten them to today's Group 2 state semifinal.

Ramsey has allowed just one goal in 355 minutes of play during four state tournament games, including two that went into double overtime. Molly Barrow, who started the year sharing time in net after being the jayvee goalie in 2012, has taken over as the full-time starter and done a solid job replacing standout keeper Nicole Cirilli.
