AP photo: Francis Specker Rocker explodes The Associated Press maumee, ohio John Rocker was in complete control during his first minor league appearance Friday, but he couldn't keep his temper in check around reporters. Rocker, making his first appearance for the Triple-A Richmond Braves, struck out the side in the ninth inning against the Toledo Mud Hens. Rocker signed some autographs during the game, setting off a run on souvenir baseballs at the gift shop. There was no question who the crowd of 7,733 came to see.

Before the game, an angry Rocker stalked off into the clubhouse following a throwing session in which he was agitated with reporters. Rocker's outburst Friday came one day after a Toledo television report claimed the pitcher made an obscene gesture toward a camera crew. The video shown by WNWO-TV showed someone in a cab making the gesture after Rocker and the Richmond Braves played the Mud Hens Thursday. Braves assistant general manager Frank Wren said Rocker was not the person in the video. K.C.

During batting practice, which draws crowds wherever the Cards go, McGwire hit shot after shot into the seats as hundreds of fans cheered every swing of the bat.

McGwire hit one up against the statues in deep centre field and cleared the left-field seats under the giant scoreboard with another monster shot. But once the game started it was another story McGwire took a called third strike in his first at-bat, lined out to Higginson in left field his next time up, struck out on a checked swing in the seventh and took a called third strike in the ninth while representing the tying run. Making it happen "Weaver pitched me tough all night," said McGwire. "He had it all working for him tonight. But I would like to see the fences brought in," added McGwire with a smile.

But on this night, it might not have mattered. "Jeff's getting to the point now where he's not only figuring out what to throw but he's making it happen," said Tiger manager Phil Garner. "His control tonight was masterful." The Tigers, meanwhile, pecked away at Cards' starter Garrett Stephenson with single runs in each of the second, third and fourth innings. Run-scoring hits by Deivi Cruz and Bobby Higginson plus a ground out by Brad Ausmus combined to give Weaver all the run support he would need. And then Dean Palmer's 12th homer of the season inside the left-field foul pole in the sixth made it 4-0.

CENTRAL DIVISION 5t. Louis 60 33 27 .550 19-14 14-13 4-6 .274 4.81 By Dave Hall star sports writer DETROIT On a hot, sultry night with a capacity crowd at Comerica Park collectively willing Mark McGwire to hit another bomb, Jeff Weaver refused to give in. Not only did Weaver keep McGwire in the ballpark all night but he turned in a masterful four-hit, eight-inning performance as the Tigers dumped the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2. There's no question 40,000 people showed up hoping to see another prodigious display of power from the Cardinals' slugger but it was Weaver who was the dominating factor in Detroit's victory Weaver, who struck out five and didn't walk anyone, didn't allow a hit until Larry Sutton's line drive single to right field with one out in the fifth inning.

"Sure, it's a challenge, I mean, everyone came here tonight to see Mark hit one and it's great to do out there and do your job against him," said Weaver. "When you can get a guy like that out three or four times, it's great for the confidence." Thomas Howard finally broke up Weaver's shutout with a two-run homer into the right-centre field seats in the seventh inning. With his long locks flying and with desperation in his eyes, Kuerten flitted around the court in the final two sets Friday to avoid an upset against 20-year-old Juan Carlos Ferrero, winning 7-5, 4-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, in three hours, 38 minutes of drama. The 1997 French Open champion, Kuerten shook off back spasms and fatigue to impose his elegant, fluid style on the aggressively attacking Spaniard playing his first French Open and first Grand Slam semifinal.

Kuerten came off the court looking a bedraggled mess, clay in his hair and beard and every crevice of his clothes, but his skinny legs didn't wobble despite pushing his court time this tournament to 15'A hours with his second straight five-setter. "I'm very strong now, and I'm going to be more stronger in the final," the Brazilian said with a smile. No one has seemed stronger in this tournament than Norman, a fitness-obsessed Swede who has lost only one set so far while playing a total of 12 hours in six matches. Looked comfortable Norman looked comfortable with his latest workout, a 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 rout of Argentina's Franco Squillari, as if it were a nice interlude between his morning jog and his afternoon weightlifting. It was a far different experience for the 24-year-old Norman from his first Grand Slam semifinals, which he lost badly in straight sets to Yevgeny Kafelnikov at the Australian Open in January "Down in Australia, things got a little bit too big for me," Norman said.

"I was very nervous. Today, I had a lot of confidence in myself. I said to myself, 'I've been here before. This is my day. I'm going to do everything I can to be able to be in the Squillari, a 23-year-old who had never gone past the third round of a Grand Slain tournament, stood so far away from the net in this match he should have been charged for a spectator's seat.

Norman is hardly a net attacker himself, but he looked like Pete Sampras compared with Squillari. housing WOMEN'S SINGLES FINAL A BATTLE OF MINDS PARIS The women's French Open final between Mary Pierce and Conchita Martinez will be a battle of minds as much as groundstrokes when the pair clash at Roland Garros today (8:30 a.m., TSN). While Spanish fifth seed Martinez has brought a psychologist to Paris to help her get through matches, Pierce will be relying on the support of the home crowd to pull her through. The sixth seed may need their support more than ever after suffering severe cramps following her gruelling three-set semifinal victory over top seed and world No. 1 Martina Hingis. But she is determined to make a full recovery as she bids to enter the record books as the first Frenchwoman to win her home Grand Slam in the Open Era, which began in 1968.
