The Township's annual Memorial Day Parade celebrated the lives of veterans on May 27. Starting at 10 a.m., the parade followed its usual route from Westwood High School parking lot to President Road, then east on Ridgewood Road to Colonial Boulevard, north to Washington Avenue, west to Pascack Road, and south to Town Hall. The grand marshal was Vietnam veteran Bill Thompson. A memorial service led by VFW Commander Steve Kohlreiter was conducted at Veterans Square. Mayor Janet Sobkowicz delivered a brief address remembering the deceased.

Deacon Bob Glasner, Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, delivered the invocation and Reverend John James, Bethany Church, gave the closing benediction. Memorial wreaths were placed by eight organizations from town. The Euckers sang the National Anthem, Amazing Grace, and My Country Tis of Thee. Jim Dugan sang God Bless America. Township resident Vito Trause, a World War II veteran and prisoner of war (POW), was honored with a ride in a motorcycle sidecar.

In the 1940s, Vito was serving as a soldier, when his squad was ambushed in the Italian Apennines Mountains and brought to a German prison camp. Nearly a year later, when he and fellow POWs were librated, they commandeered German motorcycles with sidecars. For six days they drove from Munich, where the prison camp was located, eventually reaching Paris. After enjoying his rest and recuperation in and around Paris, Vito boarded a troop ship in Le Havre, and headed home to America. PHOTO COURTESY OF JIM DUGAN News tip? Call 201-664-2501.
