PRO FOOTBALL THE RECORD S-7 MONDAY, JANUARY 2, 2012 JETS Holmes sets a bad Benched after argument with teammate in tone Jets' huddle Mark Sanchez into an interception that set up a fourth-quarter field goal. He also had an apparent 20-yard fumble return for a score that was reversed by replay review later in the final quarter. After the game ended, he was carried off the field by teammates. "It was a fun game today," Taylor told reporters in a marathon postgame news conference in which he thanked and praised many current and former coaches and teammates, including Ryan. "I enjoyed every minute of it." Briefs WR Patrick Turner scored the Jets' final touchdown of the season on a 1 0-yard reception from Sanchez with 1 :1 5 to go, but Miami's Brandon Marshall easily recovered the onside kick afterward.

Turner's first NFL touchdown came against the team that waived him in September 201 0. ILB David Harris, a second alternate for the Pro Bowl, left the game in the third quarter with a calf injury and didn't return. Harris was second on the team in sacks with five and tied for the lead in interceptions with four. TE Dustin Keller finished as the Jets' leader by far in both receptions (65) and receiving yards (815). His first-quarter touchdown catch was his fifth of the season.

J.P. Pelzman By J.P. PELZMAN STAFF WRITER MIAMI Last season, the fourth quarter for the Jets came to be known as Tone Time. On Sunday, it was Alone Time. Instead of being out on the field trying to help the Jets to a fourth-quarter comeback, wide receiver Santonio Holmes was sitting by himself on the bench.

He was yanked from the game during the Jets' final drive after getting into a verbal altercation with a teammate in the huddle. Holmes was held without a reception for the first time in his six-year pro career as the Jets lost to Miami, 19-17. He was targeted only once by quarterback Mark Sanchez (three interceptions), and had fewer receptions than left guard Matt Slau-son, who latched onto a deflected Sanchez pass for a 1-yard gain in the fourth quarter. Jets coach Rex Ryan, who made the mercurial Holmes a captain in August shortly after the receiver re-upped with the team for a five-year, $50 million deal with $24 million guaranteed, claimed he had no idea about the benching, which clearly came from the coaching staff. "I looked out there and was wondering why he wasn't out there, myself," Ryan said.

"So I did not bench Santonio. You'll have to ask him. I'm trying to follow the play and I noticed he wasn't in there. Somebody told me that he was on the bench." Holmes was replaced by backup wideout Patrick Turner, who caught a 10-yard touchdown pass Santonio Holmes watching from the sideline in the final moments of Sunday's loss. Cromartie said, "uh, maybe on one side of the ball." Running back LaDainian Tomlinson, one of the team's leaders, said, "there were some guys in the huddle that were unhappy with Tone's demeanor.

It's tough for guys to follow a captain that kind of behaves in that manner. "You're a captain and guys are looking at you. You've got to lead by example. You got to play your tail off until the last play. And when that doesn't happen, you will have guys look at you in the way that captains shouldn't be looked at.

"You should always put yourself out there as a leader." Tomlinson said he would ad- LT's future uncertain Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson was non-committal about his future after the Jets' 1 9-1 7 loss at Miami. Tomlinson completed his 11th NFL season, but his two-year contract with the Jets has ended. He will be a free agent. "It will be three weeks, four weeks maybe," before he decides, Tomlinson said. "We just need to see what happens, because that will determine if I continue to play.

Right now, I'm emotional. I don't want to make an emotional decision if I'm going to play or not. That's not fair to my family and everyone who knows me. I just need to take time to calm down and get my thought process back right." Tomlinson also reiterated that if he continues playing, he wants it to be with a contender. "If that opportunity really doesn't present itself," he said, "I won't be playing." Taylor wraps it up Jets coach Rex Ryan gave then-Jets LB Jason Taylor a Gatorade shower after the Jets won in Miami last season in Taylor's only NFL game in Miami as a visiting player.

On Sunday, back with the Dolphins, Taylor helped douse the Jets' playoff chances in the last game of his 1 5-year NFL career. He harassed former teammate JETS Turning point The Jets led, 10-6, and had Miami pinned at its 6 following a 42-yard punt by T.J. Conley. But the Dolphins managed to go 6-for-6 on third down en route to a 21 -play, 94-yard touchdown drive capped by Matt Moore's 1-yard pass to FB Charles Clay with 10:27 left. Star Jets LB David Harris suffered a calf injury on the seventh play of the drive and didn't return.

Moore was 12-for-13 for 90 yards on the march. Play of the game With the Jets threatening to retake the lead, Miami LB Marvin Mitchell intercepted an under-thrown checkdown pass intended for RB Shonn Greene, and took it 55 yards to the Jets' 36. It led to a 44-yard Dan Carpenter field goal, giving the Dolphins a 19-10 lead. All three of Mark Sanchez's interceptions led to Miami field goals. Costly mistakes Jets TE Matt Mulligan had a 1 5-yard facemask penalty that helped short-circuit a promising drive in the third quarter.

He also had two false-start penalties in the first half. Sanchez threw two interceptions to Miami DE Randy Starks. The first one led to Carpenter's 58-yard field goal on the final play of the first half. Jets LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson had two false-start penalties on a second-quarter drive on which the Jets managed only a field goal. Eye-catching Jets WR Jeremy Kerley accounted for 128 yards of total offense.

He had four receptions for 71 yards, one rush for 16 NEED yards on an end-around, and a 41 -yard completion to Mulligan out of the Wildcat. The pass was the key play in the Jets' first touchdown drive. RB LaDainian Tomlinson had a season-high 56 yards on 1 1 carries, and passed former Pittsburgh great Jerome Bettis for fifth place on the NFL career rushing list. Bettis had 13,662 yards. LT now has 13,684.

Greene had 55 yards on 14 carries, and finished the season with 1 ,054. It was the first 1 000-yard season for the third-year pro. Coaching decisions Embattled Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer came up with a terrific play call Kerley's pass to a wide-open Mulligan on the Jets' second drive. But he went conservative on the first possession of the third quarter, calling back-to-back runs on second-and-17 and third-and-14. Those plays led to the punt that put Miami at its 6, from which point the Dolphins drove almost the length of the field to take the lead for good.

Looking ahead The Jets (8-8) missed the playoffs for the first time in coach Rex Ryan's three-year tenure, and won't play another meaningful game until September. They will play every team in the AFC South and NFC West next season. They also will have home-and-homes with AFC East rivals Miami, Buffalo and New England. They also will host Oakland and visit Pittsburgh. J.P.

Pelzman CASH? ASSOCIATED PRESS dress it with Holmes. Sanchez sidestepped the issue more adeptly. "The only thing I'll say about that," he said, "is that it's an emotional game. The stuff in the huddle, I don't really talk about that publicly. That's kind our thing on the field and I don't really want to say too much about it.

That's really for those guys in the huddle." Holmes was evasive about what actually happened and also didn't answer directly when asked if he was upset about not having a reception. And when asked point blank if he wants to come back to the Jets, he replied, "thank you, guys" and walked out of the interview room. Time: 2:57. from Sanchez to complete the desperate drive. "It was a coach's call," said Holmes, who scored or set up the winning score in four games last season. "Patrick came in and tapped me on the shoulder and told me to come out." Turner said those orders came from wide receivers coach Henry Ellard, who almost certainly got the word from offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. Not only had Holmes gotten into an argument with an unidentified teammate, other players thought his body language showed he wasn't mentally into the game.

When asked if the team gave enough effort, cornerback Antonio "Everybody has to be on the same page. Everybody has to want the same thing. We had that the last couple of years but just came up a litde short of our goals." Jets tight end Dustin Keller ting three turnovers for the third straight game, all of which the Jets lost. The Jets got their final touchdown without wide receiver Santonio Holmes on the field, after he had been yanked from the game because of his bad body language and demeanor. Miami converted six of six third-down chances on the drive, all on Matt Moore passes. It was reminiscent of Denver's 95-yard game-winning drive against the Jets on Nov. 17. The Jets finished 2-6 on the road this season.

To put that in perspective, the Jets had two road victories in the postseason each of the past two years. "It was ridiculous," Ryan said angrily. "We couldn't get off the field on third down." The Jets had a chance to regain the lead in the fourth quarter, but Mark Sanchez tossed his third interception of the game on third-and-6 from the Miami 10. Incredibly, all three of the picks came on checkdown plays, which are supposed to be high-percentage throws. "To get intercepted three times on checkdowns is frustrating and pretty rare," said Sanchez, who insisted he hasn't lost confidence despite commit- mate.

We have a lot of great players on this team but next year we definitely have to come back better as a team. You can have all the greatest individuals in the world, but if they're not great team players, you're not going to win anything. "Obviously, it's a long process," Keller added, "and it's going to take us meeting in the off-season even when we're not supposed to. We have to have guys that are buying into the system. Everybody has to be on the same page.

Everybody has to want the same thing. We had that the last couple of years but just came up a little short of our goals. This year, at times I felt like we had it, but at times I felt like we didn't. From start to finish, we have to be a team." And they have to be a better team, both on the field and in the locker room. This year's team didn't have the chemistry of the past two that went to the AFC title game.

"To not even make it into the playoffs when our goal is to win the Super Bowl is just really frustrating," Keller said. We Buy Coin Collections up to 90 Tenafly Gold Coin 201-888-7418 5 Hillside Ave, Tenafly, NJ 07670 (Across From The Train Station).
