B2 TUESDAY, MAY 3. 2005 Sports SALINA JOURNAL 9 i 0 Q. CO LU I cc LL LU Chiefs to White: Thanlcs, no thanks KANSAS CITY, Mo. Jason White, the former Oklahoma quarterback passed over in the NFL draft, won't be invited back to the Kansas City Chiefs' mini- camp. White, who won the Heisman Trophy as a junior in 2003, got the news Sunday from coach Dick Vermeil at the end of a three-day tryout for rookies.

He had been competing with seventh-round draft choice James Kilian of Tulsa for a possible spot with the Chiefs, who already have three veteran quarterbacks on the roster. "What I recommended him to do, if he really wants to play in the NFL, is to go to the Arena League, sharpen his skills and compete," said Vermeil. "I think he's aware of where he is and what he needs to do." General manager Carl Peterson had said earlier that it might be two weeks before the Chiefs made a decision on White, adding they'd be willing to send films of his Kansas City workout to any other teams that showed interest in him. Boston settles suit for 5.1 million BOSTON The city paid $5.1 million Monday to the parents of a college student who was killed by a pepper-spray pellet fired by police trying to subdue a riot among Red Sox fans outside Fenway Park after Boston's playoff win over the New York Yankees last fall. Victoria Snelgrove, a 21-year-old Emerson College senior from East Bridgewater, died hours after she was hit in the eye socket with the supposedly non- lethal projective on Oct.

21 after Boston beat the Yankees for the American League pennant. Deputy Superintendent Robert E. O'Toole, who was in charge of operations around Fenway that night and fired one of the weapons, also will retire from the force, the Police Department said. Winslow injured in motorcycle wreck CLEVELAND Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. sustained internal injuries when he was thrown ftom a motorcycle, the team said Monday night.

Winslow, who missed most of last season with a broken right leg, also has swelling in his right shoulder and right knee. The extent of those injuries won't be known until further tests are performed and the swelling subsides. The Browns didn't provide details of Winslow's internal injuries, but said they are not life-threatenihg. Winslow had complained of chest pains after he'was injured Sunday Winslow was riding in a community college parking lot Sunday when he hit a curb at about 35 mph and was thrown from the motorcycle, Westlake police Lt. Ray Arcuri said.

Wallace wins top defensive honor AUBURN HILLS, Mich. Pistons center Ben Wallace won the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year award for the third time in four years Monday. Wallace, who was presented with the award at an afternoon news conference, joins Dikembe Mutombo as the only two players to win the award three or more times. Like he was blocking a shot, Wallace deflected credit to his teammates. "I wish we could divide this up and give a piece to everybody," he said.

Wallace also won it in 2002 and 2003. Mutombo won in 1995, 1997, 1998 and 2001. NASCAR TOP 10 NEXra Cup Series Following race 9 of 36 Top Top Wks Prev. In Rk Driver Points Wins 5s 10s topic rank 1. Jlmmle Johnson.
