O'Brien had 133,760 votes and Wagner had 128,809. Thomson received 99,184 votes and Yudin, 98,832.

In the county surrogate race, Democratic incumbent Michael Dressier held on to his office by beating Republican challenger John Scalzo, a former Bogota councilman. Dressier had 138,049 votes to Scalzo's 91,758. The wins cemented the Democrats' control of a county government that was a Republican bastion less than a decade ago. Now, County Clerk Kathleen Donovan will be the only Republican to hold a countywide elected office. Both freeholder slates mirrored the platforms of their county executive running mates, Democratic incumbent Dennis McNerney and Republican Todd Caliguire.

McNerney beat Caliguire on Tuesday for a second four-year term. Wagner and O'Brien both shared McNerney's main concern, the consolidation of municipal services and regionalization of small school districts. Like Caliguire, Thomson and Yudin were critical of the Democrats' practice of awarding contracts to political donors. O'Brien, 48, was a Ramsey councilwoman from 2003 to 2006 and a commissioner on the Northwest Bergen Utilities Authority. Wagner, 58, is a guidance counselor at Paramus High School and has been a Paramus councilwoman since 2002.

The person most celebrated was Bergen County Chairman Joseph Ferriero, who took the stage to the theme from "Rocky." He was joined by the freeholders, who all held a broom signifying a sweep of the lone Republican seat on the board. "You have my love forever," O'Brien said to Ferriero. County Surrogate Michael Dressier, who was reelected, also lauded Ferriero. "You've taken a party in disarray and you made it the most powerful organization in the state," he said. County Republicans said Tuesday that Caliguire's loss was a battle cry to scrap the party organization and rebuild.

McNerney, 39, of Ho-Ho-Kus, painted his Democratic administration as the antidote to years of inactivity under Republican control. He said his commitment to a diverse workforce, preservation of open space and determination to regionalize municipal services were reasons to elect him. Caliguire, 51, of Ridgewood, constantly criticized McNerney and the Democratic-controlled freeholder board for awarding millions in no-bid contracts to political contributors. The funding war played out decidedly in favor of McNerney. McNerney's campaign committee spent $637,325 as of late October.

His campaign was also bolstered by Victory 2006, the campaign committee for the Democratic freeholder candidates, which spent more than $100,000 on TV ads promoting the county executive, in addition to other expenditures. By contrast, Caliguire's campaign committee and the Bergen County Republican Organization spent a combined $107,000 as of late October. McNerney had broadcast radio and television spots since mid-October trumpeting his accomplishments and ridiculing Caliguire's plan. One radio ad featured an actress as Caliguire's mother yelling at her son over his plans to cut county services. "They lied about my record," Caliguire said.
