Local critics name the Far From Heaven star 'best actress of 2002' By David Spaner Movie Critic Julianne Moore can add the Vancouver Film Critics Circle to her long list of admirers. The critics representing local print, on-line and broadcast media named Moore the best actress of 2002 for her role in Far From Heaven, following recognition from the Venice filmfest, Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globes and Independent Spirit Awards. Vancouver critics awards went to The Hours for 2002's best film and the Vancouver feature Flower Garnet for best Canadian film. The Hours also won for best director (Stephen Daldry) and supporting actress (Toni Collette). Daniel Day-Lewis (Gangs of New York) won best-actor honours and Chris Cooper (Adaptation) best supporting actor.

Spanish director Pedro Almodovar's Talk to Her was chosen best foreign-language film. Flower Garnet also won for best Canadian director (Keith Behrman) and actor (Callum Keith Rennie). Ben Ratner was named best supporting actor in a Canadian film for Looking for Leonard. The Vancouver film Punch, directed by Guy Bennett, picking up honours for best Canadian actress (Sonja Bennett) and supporting actress (Meredith McGeachie). "It's flattering because there's so much great work being done in indie film in Canada right now," said McGeachie.

"It's impor- Julianne Moore and Dennis Haysbert are among the stars in Far From Heaven. tant that the press is supportive of Canadian film because we have to build an audience base." McGeachie portrayed a boxer in Punch, the story of the relationship between a daughter and father and the punch that comes between them. It goes into theatres in February. The Vancouver award was not the first for Flower Garnet, which has drawn acclaim on the festival circuit. "It's overwhelming," said producer Trish Dolman.

"As a first feature how can I ask for anything more than the amazing response we're getting." The tough drama, about family bonds in small-town B.C., will be released in April. dspaneiMpng.canwest.com 3 I aTiWii rlktTmllhffri i Mil I mjm The members of the Vancouver Film Critics Circle are David Spaner, The Province; Glen Schaefer, The Province; Marke Andrews, Vancouver Sun; Kather-ine Monk, Vancouver Sun; Ken Eisner, Georgia Straight, Janet Smith, Georgia Straight, Ian Caddell, Reel West Mag-azneCKNW 'Georgia Straight; Peter Chattaway, Vancouver Courier, Mary Frances Hill, WestEnder, Rick Staehling, CBC Radio; John T.D.
