Wro koll Avenue St. marks Place, 8t Marlis Avenue. To the Editor of the Brooklyn Eagle Frequent reference litis been mnde of late to the puzzling Inconsiatoacies of our eystom or want of system in naming and mini boring tho streols ol Brooklyn. As tho conundrum Is beyond tho comprehension of our own residents it must bo evident that to Btroiigors the only way to keep from bolng lost In tho mazes of stroots Is to keep close to tho main thoioughfaros. Tho duplication of namoa and tho reduplication prefixed to streets, avenues, places, lanes anil alloys Is utterly bewildering.

How many Fourth streets or Sixth streets there ara In this city fow old residents oven can toll without a mathematical calculation. If tho tondoncy of recent changes were toward simplicity there would be some reason to hope for bettor things, but almost every change Is In tho direction of confusion worso confounded." To pass from generals to par ticulars let me illustrate by a single Instance taken almost at rauuom from tho many such: We hear Wyckott street aud WyckofT avenuo. Formerly Wyckolf street In South Brooklyn ox tondod from Court streot east to the city line. Some years ago tho part lying in the vicinity of Now York and Brooklyn avonuos tho aristocratic part took upon itself tho namo St. Marks placo and was so recognized.

Lator, Wyekoff street, Including the former SL Marks placo, from Fifth avenue east to tho city line was changed to St. Mnrks avenue and the numbor. assigned accordingly. The whole has for years boon spoken of indifferently as St Marks placo and St Marks avonuo. To complicate mat tors still more somo of tho street lamp, have until tho prosont time borno tho legend SL Marks placo.

Soveral sets of numbers may be found on parts of tho avenuo, not oven the residents know ing which 1b tho latest and oflleial. Recently an other element has been addod to the puzzle. Tho part of old Wyokoll stroet from Third avonuo to Fifth avonuo has beon changed to St Marks place, but tho old Wyekoff street numbering remains, beginning with 297 and ending with 436. A stranger comes to Brooklyn to call upon a friend residing at, say, 200 St Marks avonuo or place, not cortaln which. At Fulton Ferry ho asks for a car that will take him to St Marks placo.

lie is accordingly put on board a Third avenuo car. He is duly lot out at Third and St Marks placo. The conductor points up tho streot and says, This Is St Marks placo." The visitor first oncountors 297 or 308. Naturally he turns about and goo3 down tho streot looking for 200. Tho numbors diminish, but oro long lie finds he has left St.

Marks placo and ia wandoriug in Wyekoff stroet Where is 200 St Marks place? Inquiry does not furnish a solution. The enlightened pooplo of that immediate neighborhood do not fully comprehend the matter, and our visitor returns to the placo whonco lie came, having failed to get out of tho muddle. This is no fancy skotch, for within tho kuowlodgo of tho writer It has oceurrod again and again. It takos some timo and space to delineate all this, but every day passougors go astray and people aro losted" iu Brooklyn through want of a simple, sensible, intelligent system of naming and number ing our Btroots. Tho obvious iuference from all this ia that this ovil should bo remedied.

Brooklyn, January 20, 18S0. A. W. ADSTO. HE IS PROUD OF MS SON Ann Iiitliiinintic About the Effects Roller Skntinsf.

off To tht Bditor of the Brooklyn Kagte: I lmve just heard that there was an artiolo In tho Eaoi.k some days ago, but which escaped my notice, to the oftoct that my son, Lansing T. Mitchell, was going into cousumptivo decline from roller skating. Instead of this being true, ho is enjoying perfect health, and novor was stronger and more vigorous than nt present He now skates three nights in a week, goes to School No. 11 everyday, stands high in his studies, and I will match him against any young studont in the city for answering quostions relating to scioutiflc mechanics and the practical construction of the. machinery now in uee.

And I view it a. a duty I owo to tho community to say that If thoy wish their children to have strong and vigorous mind' thoy must soo to It that thoy havo continuous pr.Blcal oiorclso, and for this pur pose, in my opinion, there la nothing excels or equals roller skating. It was tho athletic games among tho ancient Greeks and Romans that produced the most robust physical constitution and therefore tho most healthy pooplo that over lived. But tho development of every muscle tho system afforded by those games ia fully met by the action of roller skating, and which avoids any particular strain upon a single muscle, such as atlilotos are liable to. But while the athletic games oxclude females, roller skating affords them Its advantages, and which our daughters need moro than our sons, and If all our girls should skate about an hour each day, It would iusuro tho most perfect safoty against consumptlvo docllue, aud the expense would be more than saved from doctors' bills.

Let tho croakers croak. I bollovo that the time Is not far distant when every large hotel will havo Its skating parlor, aud oven that olevatod tracks will bo built over great thoroughfares for roller skaters going to and from their business. To bo able to travel three mllos In ten minutes, with perfect ease and ovou pleasure, cauuot but bo takea advantago of by tho capitalists of our day. It requires Iobs expenditure of force to skato on rollers three miles than to walk a half mile at any considerable speod. T.

To the Editor of tht Eayh: I read with much interest your item about tho Sound stoamboata. I remombor seeing tho President and tho Franklin at tho wharf at Washington stroet, uoar tho old Battery, more than fifty yearB ago. Wont streot was not laid out then. The old Constellation and the Constitution ran to Albany in from foot of Cotirtlnnd streot. Tho writer ol the article has omitted somo of tho old Sound boats.

One, tho Hunker Hill, ran to Hartford. There formerly ran to Now London and Groton tho Con necticut and tho Oregon. Tho lattor was wrecked Fiuliors Island. Tho Commonwealth, a lino boat, was burned at the dock at Groton. 1 saw tno old Uhodo Island and Massachusetts many a lime going up tho East River forty years ago; also tho ill fated Lexington, when sho was burned.

Only four lives saved of ovor 100. Thoro was another lino boat named tho Atlantic, Captain Dustan. She was wreckod In a storm on Fishers Island. I do not romomber tho year. Many lives wore lost I think your contributor mado an error iu saying tho Rhode Island was Tho Massachusotta ran ashoro in a fog on Long Island coast near the oast end, but was got off after a timo and heavy ex pense and is now running in tho Summer season.

The old Massachusetts had two engines and tho old lihodo Island had an upright ono. aro not many liko It at this day. I have had many pleas ant trips on some of tho flno boats that run on the Sound to Now Haven, Hartford, Now Loudon, Ston lngton, Nowport, Fall River, Rrlstol and Provl donco in my Summer excursions; also on tho North Kivor, Lake George, Lake Champlain aud tho St Lawrence River.
