It iB tbo narrowest point on tho river. The shortening of the span in this way will, of oourse, as the most ignorant layman can perceive, lessen the cost of the enterprise by millions of dollars. The point where it is proposed to crass the river is at Negro's point bluff on Ward's island. Pram the shore line here to the Long Island snore lino is only 700 feat. This is much more practicable and much less costly than to throw immense spans across the East river at its broadest points.

The Rainey plan is to croaa at Black well's island. This makes two long spans necessary. The Corbin plan, which did not pass tho legislature, is throw two long spaBB across with the central pier on a ledge of rock south of Blackwoll's island. Mr. Barnes' plan is obviously simpler and cheaper.

But thiB bridge is only a part of the project, although it is one of the principal partB. Two othsr bridges will have to be erected. One will be across Little Hell gate to Bandall's island and the other across Bronx kills to the main land Those will be only 300 feet spans over unnaviga blo waters. These bridges will be conveniences for the railroad which it is proposed to construct. This may be, if successfully accomplished, a great aid in developing the city.

It will be only six miles long as at present laid out. Starting from West choBter county above the Bronx river it will pass over these bridees nntil it flanks tho end of Newtown creek. In other words, it will eiva Brooklyn a direct connection with the railroadsfof the continent. Freight and passencers will be con transformation hag takes place. Such a gathering as this could be called ioceth er at8hort notice only in the life of an Awerican club. The life of the club in Ihe old world today is the same at it has been for centuries. The elub in London and in' Paris the home of tbo bachelor and of tho widower. It is the linnto of refuge for the married man who is a victim oi home rule. But while the American clab has nil iho beet foaturea that tho clubs of tbe old world possess, it has also the Erogarious feature and that feature is its strength and its virtue.

A club like this is made up of men of family, who can lenvn at the door politics and religion and tho shop and rub together on all questions and in the contact advance to a constantly highor plane of culture, finding that the best qualities of each aro the common gift of all. Here a Democrat discovers that a liepublicau is not wholly bigoted. Hore a Ilepublican discovers that a Democrat mac not bo utterly bail. Here an Episcopalian may find that the Presbyterian has somothing in him beside form and tbo Baptist mnv loarn thr.t he can bo saved without being immersed. There is ono thing which I have found as tho result of my obsorvav on and experience wtiich i will stale to yoa, arid it is this, that the greatest mistake a man cn Miak'e is to jjet too smart.

The Kepublican party during Ihe carpet bag period ot too smart and paved the way for Tildeu and Cleveland.
