Louis 7:30 A. M. to adopt of tabulating census data. This commission, whose expert acquaintance with the subject Is known to all, comprised Dr. J.

H. Biliinits, Professor Henry Gannett and Mr.L. M. E. Cooke.

'To this commission three schemes of tabulation rrn.n, it iv remains open until put down oy a sugnc touch ot the operator's hand. The connections with the machine are made by means of the short cable seen at the left of the sorting box, and attached to a board which is pushed in between contact clips iu the machine, thus saving valuable time by obviating the necessity of screwing and unscrewing so many binding posts whenever it is desirable to remove tho box. The dials will show the number of malts.femalea, white, colored, while the cards will have been assorted into ago groups, iiut the Hollerith machine is capable of much more than this. In statistical work it iu found that the most valuable information doea not consist iu these elemontary items, but in facts that aro more difficult to obtain, namely, combinations of theso items. Thus, it is interesting to know how many dwellers in this country are males and how many aro females; also how many are whlto and how many are colored.

But it is at least as essential to know how many of the white males arc native brn or foreign born, and hoiv many are tho children of native born or foreign parents. Honce, it is desirable to provido means for counting not simply the number of white malos.but the number of white males, nativehorn, of native parents. Mr. Hollerith's machines do this as easily as they do the lighter work. The old familiar principle ef the relay ia brought Into play very ingeniously by means of the special but simple form of relay which wo have here.

Theso relays aro mountod together in the racks at the bottom of the ma. chine. It Is simply a question of arranging the counting dials aud the relays, or, if desired, tho sorting boxes can bo treated in the same way. When the machine is once connected nn, the combination sought yields cards which will give its 20x20x40. or no fewer than 16,000 statistical heads.

Thus a very few manipulations will give an extraordinary flue degree of analysis, and the compilation Mill have a value from its minuteness that could be reached In uo other way. It it estimated that each of the 0:35 P. OHICAGO NIGHT EXPRESS. FISHKILL (NEWBURGH), POUGHKEF.PSIE. INVESTED IN U.

Practically, only six weeks were needed for the task. The announcement from the census oflice as to the population of various sections followed oach other rapidly and a rough count for the whole country was ready as early as October 30, 181)0. The last returns did not reach Mr.

Porter until November 10, but he was able to issue his celebrated bulletin, giving th official count of 02,022,250 exactly a month later, namely, on December 12. Yet all the futures had been thoroughly chocked. In reality tiie people of the United State had boen counted twice. As Mr.Portor put it at a dinner given by the chiefs ef the census oiiico to celebrate the occasion, "for the first time in the history of the world thocount of thepopulaiion ofa great nation has been made by the aid of electricity," aud every single one of cur 02,000,000 "had marched, as it were, nudor the vision of tho young men and women who nad done such remarkable work with such extraordinary rapidity and precision." Tho next step was to transfer the particulars a to each individual of the 02,000,000 from these 13.000,000 schedules, and for this purpose Mr. Hollerith had devised the machine shown hero, known as the "keyboard punch." It is about tho size of a typewriter troy, having in front a pertora ted punch board of celluloid.

Over this keyboard awings freely a sharp Index finger, whose movement, after the manner of a pautugraph, is repented at the rear by a punch. The movement of the punch is limited between two guides, upon which are placed thin manilla cards 096 inches long by inches high, with the lower corner slightly clipped. The keyboard, as will he observed, has twelve rows of twenty holes, and each hole has its distinctive lettering or number that corresponds to tho inquiry and answer respecting livery person. Hence, when the Index linger is pressed down into auy 0110 of these boles, the punch at the hack responds by punching out ti hole in tho manilla card. At first glance, perhaps, tho keyboard looks complicated, but it is scientifically grouped, and it is very readily learned.

Air such inquiries as are answered by one of a very few possible classes sex, for oxample, the answer is simply "male" or "femala," or and So, too, in regard to conjugal relationships, where the f.nswer would be cither single, married, widowed or divoroed, and one punch suffices far eaoh these conditions. These holes may easily be found in' "Dy," "Mr or "zy, the last of which means that the person was married during the cenms year. Where, however, the answers would envoi a wider range of classification, as.iu I'liiming from 1 to 100. recourse is 'Yiad to a combination of two holos, tin', rnt indicating a group, as from 25 to yoars, while its LireBii uriiain or on mo uoniinenr.
