THE WINDSOR STAR, TUESDAY, AUGUST 31, 1993- B5 Rain doesn't dampen the spirits for Mariners Regatta There was wind Sunday most of the time during the 30th annual LaSalle Mariners Yacht Club regatta around Fighting Island. At least It was an improvement over regattas held on the two previous weekends when sailors broiled under a hot sun with a paucity of wind. BOATING ffl Runners-up in his class were John Geary (Altered State, Viking 28) LMYC and George Mooney (Trynstopus, Viking 28) LMYC. First to cross the finish line and win the LMYC Inter-Island trophy and first in the five-boat PHRF A class was Stu Kevelighan (Stealth, Hobie 33) Keane's Marina, Detroit. An experienced small boat sailor from Ireland, Kevelighan previously sailed with Len 3 Gub (SPSQ continued his winning ways in the meagre fourboat Shark fleet by finishing first followed by Mo Rcgnier (Strumpet) SPSC CIYC hcsts Its annual regatta next Sunday beginning with a feeder race from GIYC and a steak barbecue on Saturday.

South Port: Tim Hartley reports conditions were favorable even if there wasn't a lot of air for South Port Sailing Club's annual dinghy regatta. Twenty boats participated. Jeremy Major topped the Laser gold fleet followed by Tom Rindlisbacher and Mike Weber. Andrew Turner won the Laser silver fleet Tim Hartley won the Wayfarer class followed by Dave Connor. SPSC expects to host the North American Wayfarer championship next year.

Boat Show: It seems a long way away in terms of time and mind-set but the National Marine Manufacturers Association has announced the dates for the Toronto Boat Show. It will be held Jan. 8-16. Coleman (Hellion, Soverel 39) Grosse Isle Yacht Clb (GIYQ. Juergen Hendel (Rakaia, Abbott 33) LMYC topped the 10-boat PHRF fleet followed by Jim Ouellette (Roller Coaster, Abbott 33) LMYC and Jerry O'Brien (Steadfast, Abbott 33) Thames River Yacht Club.

Ian Henderson (Re Zoom, Mega 30) LMYC led the seven-boat PHRF fleet ahead of Phil Bergeron (Blue Max, Kirby 25) LMYC and Paul Derrlg (Kamakaze, S2 7.9) Cedar Island Yacht Club (CIYC). Ted Wagner (High Roller, Cal 25) West Shore Sail Club triumphed in the nine-boat combined PHRF and fleets CIYC sailors Mark Enns (Breakaway, Santana 20) and Wayne Hallatt (Adlib, HR 25) in second and third spots. The 13-boat JOG (no spinnaker) fleet was won by Doug McLean (Marinator, Viking 28) GIYC with runners-up Bob Bingham (Summer Delite, Columbia 26) Dm Mon Yacht Gub and Phil Smith (Gemini, Northern 25) LMYC. Mark McCrindle (Fins) South Port Sailing There was rain Sun day lots of it In fact, it was the sort of day when there are only sailors and anglers out on the water. Oh, there was the occasional powerboat scurrying home from a weekend away.

The only occupants you saw were those huddled inside away from the elements behind the Strahl (Lionheart, Hobie 33) until earlier this season. Sailing with Kevelighan is his brother, Colin, who is visiting from Ireland for another week, an experienced sailor who sailed in the Infamous Fastnet race of 1979 when more than a dozen sailors were killed during a series of violent storms. Who's counting, of course, but in the five races between the two Hobies, Kevelighan has finished ahead of Strahl four times. Strahl was second to cross the finish line Sunday and second in the class. Third was Bob But the rain eventually did stop much to the delight of organizers back at the club who had prepared hot buttered corn and sausage for wet and chilled participants.

There were 58 competitors, down slightly from previous years. Dennis Hendel (Casper, Viking 28) LMYC jumped to a quick lead in the I0-boat Performance Handicap Racing Fleet's division. Despite a strong field nipping at his transom, he held off challengers to win the Commodore Alan Moore trophy for the best corrected time on the 10-mile course. ALAN HENDERSON slapping of the wipers against the windshield. They didn't know what they were missing.

However Gary Magwood, a co-founder of the Hall, hopes to change all that in the coming months. "We're hoping to open our exhibit space in September and that will generate more interest than just an announcement of names," said Magwood Monday afternoon. This Is the result of a year's work," added Magwood, also president of the Canadian Raring Drivers Association.

"It's the first time we've ever done something like this. "And obviously, there's just a myriad of details to oversee." After deciding about a year ago to start up a Hall of Fame, Magwood and co-founder Lee Abrahamson went about the task of finding a site. "It's the old story that nothing will get done unless somebody tackles it," said Magwood. "We had hoped to be underway already but CNE activities blocked our access to the building so we've had to wait until the exhibition ends." After securing a building, Magwood and Abrahamson started looking for nominees. They wrote to sports-car clubs, seeking nominations in three categories.

They received 20 names 15 drivers, two team members and three sponsor-builders. The eight-member selection committee whittled that number down to 10 seven drivers, one team member and two sponsor-builders and announced its inaugural inductees two weeks ago. They are drivers Gilles Villeneuve, Bill Brack, John Cannon, Eppie Weitzes, Billy Foster, Peter Ryan and Bob McLean, sponsor-builders Chuck Rathgeb and Imperial Tobacco Ltd. along with Bill Sadler in the team-member category. Villeneuve, the most recognizable name on the list, starred on the Formula One circuit racing for Ferrari from 1977 until he was killed in a crash May 8, 1982, during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix.

He won six Grand Prix races, inspiring a generation of Canadian racers that includes Canadian IndyCar drivers such as Paul Tracy, Scott Goodyear and Ross Bentley. The other names aren't as familiar and in the case of Foster, even the Hall's board members were scratching their heads. "Billy's been nominated, but I've got to be honest, no one seems to remember a lot about him," said Magwood. This much, they know: In 1965, the driver from Victoria became the first Canadian to race in the Indianapolis 500. He dropped out after 85 laps.

In the '66 Indy, he was originally blamed, but later exonerated, for a first-lap pileup that eliminated 11 cars. He was killed in a stock-car racing accident in California in 1967. Others drivers nominated include Torontonians George Eaton, Craig Hill, Horst Kroll and Francis Bradley, Montrealers Jacques Couture and Ross de St-Croix, George Chapman of Winnipeg and John Cordts of Hunt-sville. Nominated posthumously were builder Norm Namerow and team member Peter Broeker, both of Montreal. All the nominees but Foster are from the world of road racing.

Magwood hopes next year's nominees will include drag-racers and motorcyclists. "We don't want to exclude anybody," said Magwood. "It'll be up to them how they want to do It. "It's just that the road-racing community got it going." Magwood hopes that an annual selection process will yield five or six inductees a year. ASA results: Randy McDonald of Oshawa was eighth Sunday In the American Speed Association Missouri 300.

MacDonald, who was running on lap 297 at the finish, was also named 'rookie of the Windsor's Alec Pinsonneault finished 28th after going out on the 97th lap with engine problems. Todd Forbes of Bryan, Ohio was the race winner followed by Tony Raines of Bigler, Pa, and Glenn Allen of Coopersvllle, Mich.
