minister. 10:30 a.m. and 7:30. In every collection of vesper hymns one is sure to find this favorite, written about the time of America's Civil War by Dr. Sabine Baring-Gould, a popular young minister of the Church of England.

A native of Exeter, England, Dr. Baring Gould was educated at Clare College, Cambridge, and shortly after graduation decided to give his life to the church. He was 31 years old at the time of his ordination, in 1864. A few months later, while serving as curate of a parish at Horbury, England, he wrote his evening hymn, it is said, for use in prayer services which he was conducting for a group of poor folk in a little second story room of one of the village buildings. The hymn was first published in the "Church Times," a religious periodical of the day.

Three years later, it was included in a popular collection of songs entitled "Hymns Ancient and Modern." Dr. Baring Gould gave the church other hymns, some of them his own compositions, some of them translations. England will always remember him for a group of Christmas carols, set to appealing music, which he introduced from Flanders for his Unity Church of God Services 9:30 and 11 A.M.
