TDE AFTEBN00N PRESS ON MCFABLAND. ThiB afternoon's Post says of the McFarland trial: It is a mockery of law, and ends in lho opon defiance of government and in weakening tho bonds of organ society. McFarland has beeu proved guilty of a murder which has hardly been surpaiBed in cowardly atrocity in nil tho annals of private assassination.

That ho had provocation is notadefcuso; no man commits a murder without a motive, and tho only use of lho low is to control mollu'i: to crime. But this man's bareness is really too despicable to admit of any tolera lion. By tho uncontradicted testimony of Mr. Mark M. Wo truet thai the prc3s of New York, which has rertalnly won llttlo credit a a whole for ito dignity aud deeeucy in discussing the case, will not now mako this wretch Btill more prominent hy holding h'm up, as his counsel dared to do, as a symbol of fainilypurity and martial honor. The Commcrcinl says: The result of this trial will, we regret to say, have the effect to detract from the character of our criminal jurisprudence. The teaching ot the verdict is that the man hereafter who interferes betweon husband and wife is a proper subject for assassination. Tbo latter cbargo certainly Iic3 anaii)Bt the people of this country, as a wlio'e. Wo talk (jUbly about Klnns on tbo ouo baud, anil about rousiug tbo people on tbo otbov.

Tbo fact is just (bis, that tho citizens sufficiently public spirited to tako part in affairs aro charged to belong to tho lirstoombiuation, and those of our people too ee'ilsb. tcolazy, or too businesB riddon lo voto, aro periodically po3tcd as our most respectable citizens, whom corruption has driven out of the oivil arena. Thoy ilx things differently in France. There, universal sufl rago is a fact, and not a cry by which tho ballots of barbari auB aro allowed, and tho votes of many thousand cultivated citizens, whoso Bin has been their sacrifices for their section, refused. On tho riebiscitum of 1832.

tbore nearly 8,000,000 vote cast. Ou that or 1870, there appears to be at least ba'f a million more. Of tbo vote of cihlccu years ago, tho Emperor bad about 00,000. On tb's lasi his number is considerably above 7,000,000. Hy which we moan, that a voto for the means a voto for Ihe Einporor and lor bis dyna ly.

It is idle to iguoro tho significance of this fact. I.ouis Napoleon has done what has not been done in America for more than nine years trusted to a fu" vole tho whole pooplo. The Empiro shame the Kepnblic iu this supremo confidence. Tbo is in this confidence. In tho aggregate, the majority lor the throne has tbopractical effect of uratmnity.

"Reconstruction," military domination, the subversion of tbo citizen by the savage are no resources of Gallic despotism, aa they aro of Republican Liberty. "Would over Abraham Lincoln dared have thrown the decision of bis usurpations upon the whole people for free approval or disapproval? Would bis silent successor dare do as much this day, even proumiug that his trainers would allow him to do anylhing Tho very iutorrogatocies compel merriment, what timotheycompelmortification. A statesman who gained power by violence has consolidated it by suffrage. Our statesmen gain it by equal doses of sable suffrage and white disfranchisement, aud then seek to establish it by the military arm. In Trance, the people are first defied aud then deferred to.

They have forgiven the past by a present securing of tlio future. Iu America, whole fc cctiou was solicted to submission on tVe prolific promises of protection and peace aud local self goverumeiU. How submission has brought insult, disfranchisement, military rule, the elevation of tbc dependent, over tho sell supporting race, taxation without representation, and tbo irruption of tbo bayonet backing up the lowest of one secliou and tho froth of another iulo power, are matters of record. France has realized Republicanism through tyranny. The South lias realized tyrauuy through Republicanism.

Vfo aro forbidden however, the hope that those who reached tho power to oppress through tho form of a Democracy will have Ihe wisdom to rcversethcir pyramid from ils point of apes up, aud settle It solidly on its broad base of universal suffrage, iu fact as well as ill name. But this ond which will not be reacbod by them, will bo realized over aud iu spite of them. THE TWO FACED TRIO. In Now York city tho Tammany loaders are understood to keep Republican leaders in pay, so as to have a straight ticket run to divido any combiuation which may bo formed against them. In this city it looks as if Ihe Republicans kept three or four uourua1.

Democrats in pay, who areto calltkcinsclvesa "People's Committee," and regularly, just before each election; turn up as endorsers of the local nominations of tho Republican organization. The public at large uu derstaud and despise these gentry Berving in one camp under the uamo of the other. A 'VDenio craticv Committee that uniformly endorses the Repub lican local tickets, and that never yd has dared to pub lish a list of the membership of ils alleged "Commit tee," is too thin a device not to bo seen through after a single campaign. Winters, and Mr. Dillon, three Tooley Btrcet Tailors" of Brooklyn politics who constitute the People's Democratic organ ization may as well this time openly join the Republi can party, which they have uuiformly served since they hoisted their "Independent Democratic" colors. THE ELECTION TitlAl.S. District Attorney Morris has contrived to get ni loggerheads with every on the Supreme t'ourl bench in his.trbil of the election cases. On Monday hint lie preferred to be.

Yesterday he made bis appearance in Court, and alleged that he could not his wilnesscs, and desired another batch of attachments. Judge Barnard refused to keep the Jury dancing attendance day after day, and declined to do anything of the kind. Sir. JIorriB will have to do the best he can for bis Republican allies during this week, without the Feusation be was so adroitly intent on prolonging.

But these indictment eases will not bo suffered to rest hero. Several of the indicted canvassers propose to move these cases on Ihemseves, aud if Mr. Morris will furnish a list of witnesses who are known to be iu tho ilcsb, Ihe accused parties themselves will seo that thoy are forthcoming. ALEXANDER 3K CI AM) TI1E CITY SHIP. The Williamsljurgli Times insinuates that Mr.

A'oxamler McCue has been nominated for City Judge, during bis absence from the city, and with the know Udge mi the part oi the leaders of the Democratic party that ho would not accept the office if at home. Mr. Mc. Cue, although absent, is within easy reach of Ihe usi'Bl mail faolities. While tbc leaders of the local Democracy were canvassing for tho very best men of their parly who could bo induced to accept these positions, Mr.

McCue was heard from. He recommended tne of professional brethren strongly for tbo place, and took occasion to say that in bis opinion tbc position was as honorable as any judicial cilice with in the gift of his political friends, and that if at home, he would have beou tempted to aspire to it himself. The avowal that the host legal talent and highest public and private character were at the disposal of the party closed all rivalry, and decided at once the nomination of Mr. McCue. Mr.

McCue will be elected by a practically unanimous vote ou Tuesday next, and he will serve the public on the bench with the same fidelity be has bestowed on the other public trusts he has held. Boston legally regulates organ grinders, font bows low to such bucolic bandmasters as Sarsfield Gill more. A lale ordinance requires that organ grinders are always to have their permits with them aud not to play more than ten minutes in one place. The Hub relucts to revolve to such music. If these regulations can be euforccd, well.

But will Turks from Tipperary. and Italians irom Limerick, resolved to wring out wrelehcdue from hand orgaus, be very approchtivo of fermits? And, as to playing but ten minutes in one place. may we not anticipate that placo will be considered clanged if the man at tho wheel walks an inch ahead Moreover, alter 10 P. all playing is forbidden, or at hr.st tho ri'iso of Ihe orgau grinding must bo so loiv as lo be inaudible. His Honor the Mayor is credited with rising to a question of privilegeyoslcrday.and with propounding the most incisive Interrogatory of the period. An army of office seekers disclaimed tbo desire of "bothering him." "What are you here for, then?" sharply asked their harassed host. Tho old Dutchman paused for a reply. He has so paused ever since. Soue has come yet, and in exactly one half second after putting the inquiry, Mr.

Kalbllelsch was "alone in bis glory." There's no questioning that question. The Naval Cadeibhip, Examination Nest Week, About two dozen applicants for the Cadetsbip at Annapolis, from the Second Congressional District assembled yesterday afternoon at tho rooms of the of Education, and after waiting for about an hour, Mr. Garrett P.Bcrgeu announced to them that as no majority of Ihe Board was present, and Hou, Dcnias Barnes, the President, was absent, no action could be taken on Ihe matter. Mr. Bergen stated the conditions required in each case, only those between fourteen and eighteen, of perfect physical development, and of a healthy family, with no tendency to disease, and with no personal physical blemish.

The30 conditions fulfilled, any ordinarily Intelligent boy might pass the not strict mental examination. He then dismissed thorn, telling them to come at four r. M. Monday next. Thoro were many present who, at a glance, wero evidently incapacitated physically for tho honor, though all the boys wero bright aud intelligent.

Messrs. Garrett P. Bergen and James Murphy were tho only members prcsont. Mr. Gill came, but left soon.

Tho expense tho successful candidate will incur iu his outfit Is about $300, and this is but a beginning. The only business transacted related to matters of detail connected with tbc alterations now being made at the headquarters on tho corner of Washington aud Johnson streets, and the supply of blaukB required for the use of tbo Deportment. Tbo number of applications for positions on the force is daily increasing, but the amount of preliminary business to be transacted is very large, aud niusl of necessity be cleared off before the Department can bo reorgauicd.and put in running order under tho now regime..
