Another National Hockey League season begins tonight and CBET (Channel 9) coverage starts Saturday. Channel 9 will again offer Saturday and Wednesday games featuring the Toronto Maple Leafs and selected opponents. Saturdays Hockey Night in Canada package begins this week with Chicago at Toronto, the first of 26 Saturday games.

Twenty-two of those games will feature the Leafs. The other four games are Colorado at Edmonton, Nov. 7, Chicago at Winnipeg, Dec. 26, Calgary at Monreal, Jan. 23 and Quebec at Montreal, March 27.

Other Saturday night games include three between Toronto and Montreal and two Toronto-Quebec contests. Wednesday Night Hockey with Dave Hodge and gang begins Oct. 14 there has already been one exhibition game broadcast. It will carry 22 games, all with the Leafs. This schedule is remarkable only for its mediocrity.

The Leafs, who finished 1 6th overall last season in the 21 -team league will only have five games against teams which finished in the top eight positions last year. One game will be against number one finisher New York Islanders, two 'against The French-language CBC radio station CBEF (540) will carry all Montreal Canadiens games beginning Thursday at 8 p.m. with the Hartfrod and Montreal contest. WJ.R Radio (760-AM) will carry 65 games or all those not televised. The French-language CBEFT, Channel 78, will telecast 13 Saturday night Toronto games plus the All-star game.

All 1 3 matches will also be shown on CBC-TVs English language station Channel 9. Early figures on the latest Detroit Arbitron survey of listening habits shows both CKLW-AM and FM making a slight rebound although Dick Purtan lost some ground. Also, upstart rocker, WLLZ-FM is inching its way up from second spot towards perennial number one station WJR-AM. The ratings, which cover the period June 25 to Sept. 2 show CKLW-AM back in the final spot of the top 10 Detroit stations with a 3.8 per cent of all listeners aged 1 2 or more.

This is the second survey that CKLW-AM has made a slight gain. Last survey it went from 3.6 to 3.7. CKLW-FM also rebounded from a. 6 rating to a 1.1. Garden number two St.

Louis, one matchup against number four Los Angeles and one contest against seventh place Calgary. Meanwhile WKBD (Channel 50) will carry 15 Red Wings away games beginning Saturday with Detroit at Washington and following next Saturday with Detroit at Hartford. The 1 5 games in the Channel 50 lineup is a reduction of about 10 games from last year and reflects the bigger bite pay-TV is taking of so-called free telecasts. CHYR Radio (710-AM during the day and 730-AM at night) will again broadcast all Toronto Maple Leafs games beginning tonight at 8:50 with the Winnipeg Jets. J.P.

McCarthy still tops CKLW star, Dick Purtan slipped from a 7.4 share of the morning audience to 6.2. Still king of the morning talkers is WJRs J.P. McCarthy who boosted his totals from a 14.2 per cent share of listeners to 15.1 per cent. WJR-AM is still the number one station in the city with 8.8 per cent of listeners but WLLZ-FM is right behind with 7.7. Of course, WJR-AM which usually benefits from baseball coverage, had to make it on its own because of the baseball strike during much of the survey.
