IA3K SOM6 DAVS 1 OUST dont reeL Li Ke Talking ovwf IRVING Doc Desfor wrote this column for 31 years before I took it on some three years ago. Today he comes out of retirement to give us his impression of Photokina, the Worlds Fair of Photography held recently in Cologne, West Germany. This is his report: After an absence of six years, here I am again in Cologne, the ancient German city on the Rhine River with its historic twin-spired cathedral, and home for 32 years to Photokina, the worlds largest and most authoritative photography fair.

It is almost impossible to describe to an outsider the size and scope of Photokina. Some 1,200 companies that are in some way or other involved with photography participated in the 1982 show. They came from 34 different countries and spread out across 1 3 gigantic halls. NEARLY 3,000 photojournalists from every conceivable photographic publication registered for the event. The largest foreign participation came from the United States, followed by Great Britain, Japan and Italy.

4 Photokina is a dual-purpose affair. While it emphasizes the latest technological developments in every phase of photo communication, it also stresses the end product of photography: the Image. Extensive photo exhibitions and film shows are held separately in an art museum to document the aesthetic, artistic and pragmatic aspects of photography. This year, there was an exhibition of work by young, talented amateurs as well as by internationally recognized masters bf the craft whose work spans the years from 1922 to 1982: THE OVERALL MESSAGE to photo fans is that through automation, simplification and compactness, cameras and equipment now available are more convenient and easier to use, more reliable and give better results. Complex systems and processes, once only for professionals, have been simplified with automatic controls to eliminate errors so they can be used by serious amateurs.

Films are faster, more sensitive and of finer grain. Cameras for the snapshooter underwent a revolution this year when Kodak introduced the disc system in the U.S. in February. At Photokina, it is being introduced to Europe. At the same time, other new disc cameras, new disr films and accessories were unveiled here and will make their way back to the U.S.

to make the system more accessible and useful. KODAKS PRESENTATION of disc photography was accomplished in a theatrical production in a circular auditorium. It involved a panorama of bright, bouncing multi-media images spanning a huge circle and choreographed to lively music and dazzling laser beams. More than 100 slide and motion picture projectors were used for the spectacular show. Kodak also demonstrated a possible future option for disc photographers.

A disc can be placed in a video display unit for miewing on a television screen. Any of the 15-image pictures can be studied and any selected picture enlarged or cropped to a specific size or composition. A photofinisher can then make a color print in the recroppcd size and composition selected by the customer. While the research and technology of such a system has been explored and demonstrated as feasible by Kodak scientists the question of commercial production is open for future demand. If camera fans find it desirable, they can get it.

New film coating NEW YORK (AP) Eastman Kodak Co. has introduced a transparent magnetic coating that codes film and enables movie and television studios to automate the final production of motion pictures ith the help of computers. The coating, called Datakode Magnetic Control Surface, essentially allows for each frame to be uniquely identified so that its data can be read by a computer, Kodak said at a news conference. Complete fhe chuckle quoted by filling in the missing words you develop from step No 3 below Opening lead 9 The rubber bridge expert wisely safeguards the contract, disregarding the overtricks that are so dear to duplicate enthusiasts. The difference appears in todays hand, played by Patti Medford in Los Angeles rubber bridge tournament. Mrs. Medford took the queen of hearts and led a club for a finesse with dummys jack. It would have been awkward to lose to a singleton king; but when the jack of clubs won, the slam was home.

A duplicate expert would continue with dummys ace of clubs since that produces an overtrick if West started with the doubleton king. But leading the ace of clubs loses the slam if West started with four clubs, as in the actual hand. Declarer made sure of the slam by getting to her hand with a diamond in order to lead the nine of clubs. If West produced the ten or king, there would be no problem. If West played low, South could let the nine ride for a nesse and would surely get four club tricks even if East could win the trick.

ANSWER: Bid three spades. YOur light raise to two spades was based on club shortness, but this is not likely to help your partner in the defence against three clubs. Nothing very serious is likely to happen to three spades. lkmiOMKEA youuwr twzmjnaxcu- TO DO MJOHHDtWtm turn mv urt to ou it, im.cMmM.Am mat? ear Auve Anew HAN-OtHS, DRUBS BDtU CMzr miUMH'iinwm, -i BCKomcteaPi mr did wu say vemea-YOUK nkt ncmawm f1-MSAMN1 HUBCAP Pftxvoms MCAP ubooALivem wwcnoNS ptsAsmFucts I 3 Thoughtfortheday: It was Canada from the Atlantic and Pacific on parade.
