Spirit Of Detroit Ben Bradley is probably the most famous newspaper editor in the U.S. for his paper's courageous coverage of Watergate plus the Janet Cooke fiasco.

However, Bradley of the Washington Post was operating in a free society and because of this has to take a backseat to Jacobo Timerman.when it comes to courage and controversy. Timerman is the Argentinian newspaper publisher and editor who used his paper to oppose the unlawful seizure and disappearance of thousands of citizens who questioned that country's military dictatorship. For his efforts Timerman, was dragged from his home and imprisoned for more than two years before he was expelled from the country. This weekend Timerman's story is dramatized in the television movie, Jacobo Timerman: Prisoner Without a Name, Cell Without a Number. The two-hour NBC movie, which airs on Channel 4 at 9 p.m.

Sunday, is adapted in part from Timerman's book of the same name. Roy Scheider stars as Timerman while Liv Ullmann plays his wife, Risha, in this production which uses New York and New Jersey settings in place of the Argentine. As the story begins we see Timerman as an influential and rich Jewish newspaperman who has easy cess to the ruling dictatorship. His comfortable lifestyle is effectively contrast with the anguish felt by the families of those who have lost loved ones to the secret police. We learn Timerman supported the military dictatorship because it was preferrable to the chaos that existed.

Although the author of some tough editorials he never openly bucks the regime until his son is beaten and the boy's girlfriend, who mouthed some innocent doubts about free speech, is snatched from her At this point the production takes on an air of Five Star Final or any of the other Hollywood versions of newspaper tales. However, that aspect of it soon subsides wjth Timer-man's seizure, and it becomes a tense well-acted movie as Scheider endures physical and mental torture while Ullmann tries to discover if he is dead or alive. The events depicted in the movie, including graphic scenes of electric shock torture, took place in the late 1 970s. NBC is to be congratulated for tackling a subject that is timely and because the medium appeals to a wide band of advertisers, is bound to offend some of its constituents. However, I had some trouble picturing the short and plump Timerman as the sleek and lean Scheider.

It also seems to me the real Timerman was much more philosophical than depicted here. When his story was told on CBC's the fifth estate last year, Timerman was asked how someone can torture their fellow man, day in and day out, and just consider it a job? Here's what Timerman had to say: "If you put classified ads in the Toronto newspapers, saying that you need some torturers to save Canada, that you pay double salary, and the work is only six hours a day, you will have hundreds of people coming to do the job for the country it is the human condition." That single paragraph, from a man who has been there, is even more frightening than this thoughtful movie. eSPBSLltmljht 4:10 i.pj CS Movie "The Wife Of Monte CriSJ to" (1946, Drama) John LooS: er, LenoreAubert. 4:30 Newt it.
