We talk about the menace of cer tain age groups but overlook the fact this concerns every pedestrian from birth to the grave and every driver of every age ana ootn sexes equally.

Two hundred and twenty eight have been injured. Nearly all the accidents are taken to the county hospital and the tax money collected from you pay the expense at the institution.

"There is now a campaign to stop accidents. Nobody needs to be tnld that traffic is slower than within the memory of man of the auto age. Twenty-five miles an hour, the legal resident speed means about two minutes extra to come from the north city limits down town. Who cannot spare spare those two minutes? A drive is on to stop double parking one of the commonest causes of street accidents. Many firms have put in free parking lots and yet we selfish ones double park rather than be courteous and go into the lot.

Boulevard stops, hand signals, defective equipment, pedestrian jay walking, careless driving, no matter how low the speed, are an to be enforced. "How are we going to carry out this program? "The traffic department now has 14 men. This department is the tail of the dog of the entire police department. At present the traffic problem is the most pressing in the city and arrangements must be made by those in charge to make the tail wag the dog. We need more officers on the go all the time, day and night because the mere sight of a motor officer or the sound of his siren slows up traffic.

If every traffic officer were to write 10 citations instead of one as has been the custom, much benefit will accrue. "We need a set up in which ev ery policeman has his eye on traffic instead of allowing the most flagrant violations to take place directly in front of him. "We need an ud to date traffic court presided over by one who will devote his entire time to this safety program. When not acting as a judge, he should be the centre of the safety movement, the leader in education in schools, churches, clubs and other organizations. "We need judges who will stitten their back bones and not remit punishment or turn people loose or give sentences so small tney are not even a lesson.

"Public oninion is aroused at this moment and the people will UDhold a judge in any sentence he sees fit to assess, no matter how much it may inconvenience the guilty one. "If we had had 17 deaths from infantile paralysis this year, this city would demand everything be done, no matter how stringent, to stop such a calamity. "Not so with traffic deaths. Apparently we do not care. Let the other fello'w worry, seems to have been our motto.

"With education and engineering well taken care of, let us cooperate on the enforcement end and commend everybody who is trying to do something to stop this year after year slaughter. "Then if we are caught and a ticket given, let us be good sports, pay our fine and not try to get out of it through some friend who thinks he stands in at the city hall."
