Offensive tackle Larry Tharpe has paid his dues and is now looking for the pay he feels is due to him. The six-year veteran watched over the off-season as the Lions shelled out $15.45 million US over five years for offensive tackle Ray Roberts and another $8.4 million over four years to sign centre Jim Pyne from Tampa Bay Now, the six-foot-four, 300-pound Tharpe is looking for his piece of the pia "I think the numbers speak for themselves," said Tharpe, who played a key role in helping running back Barry Sanders reach 2,000 yards rushing last season. "If my performance wasn't up to par, then they should have let me know earlier." But from the Lions' standpoint, it's not a question of performance.

Despite his uncertain status, Tharpe participated in the Lions' threeday mini camp that concluded Sunday along with linebacker George Jamison, who is also an unrestricted free agent "I'm basically here to show my commitment and hopefully they'll show the same to me," Tharpe said.

"Things are still up in the air, but this is a gesture of good faith on my part." Acts of faith have nothing to do with a salary cap, and a player sometimes walks away from the negotiating table with a different view of things. 'Ugly side of football' "This is the ugly side of football," Tharpe acknowledges. Jamison's case is slightly different than Tharpe's. Jamison will turn 36 in September and he's coming off surgery to re-pair a torn tendon in his rotator cuff. With the additions of free agent linebackers Allen Aldridge and Rob Fredrickson, Jamison figures to be a backup if he returns.

"This is where my home is, though, and this is where I want to be," Jamison said. "I don't expect anything, but we're talking and there are some things that have to be dona" Age is not a factor for Tharpe, but at 27 he wonders if 6947-70-75-281 4 69-72-7348-282 -5 66-72-74-74-286 -1 7148-73-74-286 -1 72- 71-75-70288 7249-76-72-289 2 784949-74-290 3 7245-78-75-290 3 7548-75-73-291 t4 68- 71-77-75-291 4 73- 70-74-75-292 i 7248-74-78-292 5 7349-80-71-293 6 7747-76-73-293 72- 72-74-75-293 t6 7146-78-78-293 t6 7548-76-75-294 t7 73- 73-74-74-294 7 7947-73-75-294 7 69- 73-76-76-294 7 6149-74-71-295 8 70- 75-78-72-295 t8 75- 72-76-72-295 8 70-70-80-75-295 8 70- 75-77-73-295 8 7846-75-76-295 8 7649-78-73-296 9 76- 70-74-76-296 9 73- 70-76-77-296 75-72-78-72-297 10 7449-79-76-298 11 7849-79-73-299 12 78-70-77-74-299 12 77- 74-75-74-300 13 75-74-77-74-300 13 75- 71-83-72-301 14 78- 70-79-74-301 14 76- 73-77-75-301 14 71- 704240-303 16 77- 75-77-75-304 17 83-71-73-77-304 17 74- 73-80-77-304 17 77-72-76-79-304 17 74-77-74-79-304 17 7347-83-81-304 17 76-71-7740-304 17 Hale Irwin. $210,000 Vicente Fernandez. $123,200 Dale Douglass, $92,400 Jose Maria Canizares, $92,400 I Walt Morgan, $67,200 Graham Marsh, $56 000 David Graham. $47,600 Jim Colbert, $47,600 Leonard Thompson, $37,800 Hugh Balocchi.

"I think both guys want to be here and we want them here." Tharpe's easygoing demeanor makes him the brunt of many a joke in the locker room, but he also keeps his teammates loose.

Jamison is one of the few experienced veterans left on a club loaded with players in the four-to-six year range of their careers. Both commodities are key to the chemistry every team seeks. For the Lions to succeed, their off-field contribu tions to the team can be as important as what they bring to the field. Star News Services Trevor Dodds may want to take a photo of the 18th hole at Forest Oaks Country Club and frame it. He played the difficult par-four to near perfection in claiming his first PGA Tour victory Sunday in Greensboro, N.C.

Dodds, who battled testicular cancer last season while playing the NIKE Tour, became the 15th different winner this season in as many PGA Tour events. He was the top money-winner on the Canadian Tour in 1995 and 1996. "I played that hole in so few shots that I have to GOLF ROUNDUP write it down or get a picture to remember it," said the 38-year-old Dodds, who birdied the third hardest hole on the course four times before par-ring it as the first playoff hole to beat Scott Verplank in the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic. "Life is funny my illness, my cancer made me change my approach a lot about life," Dodds said. "In a sense, I put golf in the proper place.

Golf became the third thing in my life, but that doesn't mean I didn't want to pursue golf" He said his faith and his family are now 1-2. "(Golf) was a lesser priority but there was a new urgency," he said. It was the second straight year the $2.2 million US Greensboro tournament went into a playoff. Last year, Frank Nobilo rallied from five shots back to defeat Brad Faxon on the first extra hole, played in a virtual monsoon with temperatures hovering around 10 C. This time around the weather was in sharp contrast on the par-72, Forest Oaks Country Club course, with the sun shining and temperatures in the 20s.

But a tricky wind gusting to 40 kmh frustrated player after player down the stretch. Neumann cruises The only way Liselotte Neumann was going to lose Sunday was by beating herself. She made sure that didn't happen as she walked to the fifth tee. The Swedish golfer had just bogeyed No. 4, her three-shot lead in the Chick-fil-A Charity Championship suddenly shrinking to one.

"At that point, I was a little disappointed with myself," Neumann said. "I had been playing so well and I was like, 'What are you doing out here? All of a sudden, you're going to play I had a little chat with myself and said, 'Go at the stick. Take advantage of the way you're hitting the Neumann rebounded with a birdie at No. 5 and cruised to a three-shot victory at Eagles Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, becoming the third double-winner on the LPGA tour this year. She clinched the 12th victory of her career by shooting a two-under-par 70 in the final round.

Neumann fired a 14-under 202 total Dottie Pepper and Charlottetown's Lorie Kane tied for second at 205. Other Canadian finishers were Dawn Coe-Jones of Lake Cowichan, B.C., with 209; Gail Graham of Kelowna, B.C., at 217 and Lisa Walters of Prince Rupert, B.C., with 218. course: Thomas Bjom. Lesser Irwin regroups As good as Hale Irwin Jias been, there's always a chance a tournament will get away On a wind-swept Sunday, one almost did. Irwin, who usually runs away with golf tournaments once he gets a lead, blew almost all of a six-shot lead before steadying himself on the back nine to win the Las Vegas Senior Classic by a shot over Vicente Fernandez. "You're not going to play every round perfectly I know that," Irwin said after successfully defending the title he won last year. "You just have to remind yourself to remain patient" Patience was something Irwin sorely needed after shooting 40 on the front side to bring himself back to the field. He regrouped after giving himself a pep talk on the 10th tee, then shot one-under the rest of the way to win the $210,000 US first prize.

It was the second win in a row for Irwin, who won the PGA Seniors' Championship by seven shots last week. Bjom best Denmark's Thomas Bjom overtook Australian Greg Chalmers with a six'-under-par 66 Sunday to win the Spanish Open golf tournament in Barcelona with a 15-under 267. Minoza holds on Overnight leader Frankie Minoza of the Philippines shot a two-over-par 73 Sunday, winning the Kirin Open golf tournament by one stroke and clinching the Asian Tour's overall championship in Tsukuba, Japan. American Brian Watts was one stroke behind. Ian Leggatt of Cambridge, Ont.

in second place entering the final round carded a five-over 76 to finish four strokes back at 283. 3i. THE WINDSOR SEARS "2DAYF0VIERSALF' FLYER Windsor Star Drop: FRIDAY APRIL 24, 1998.
