WINDSORAREA A5 Boblo tradition seems safer with Seattle owner THE WINDSOR STAR, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1993 Star photoIan Timberlake DROR ZEIGERMAN, Israels consul general stationed in Toronto, addresses about 120 people Wednesday at the Jewish Community Centre Israeli diplomat says peace near open this year. Beyond that, I dont know what development plans he has." After last week's auction, Moodenbaugh told The Star he would have continued operating the park, but would add other developments, possibly residential housing, to extend the revenue-generating season of the island. That plan follows the pattern set by Moodenbaugh and partner Jeff Stock, who bought their first amusement facility last year for $8 million. Under the name Enchanted Parks the partners bought Enchanted Village amusement park and Wild Waves waterpark in February 1992. In December they proposed building a 200-room hotel and a $1 5-million, arena to complement the Enchanted Park grounds.

We want to create a year-round operation to host events, sports teams and state tournaments, Moodenbaugh told reporters in Federal Way, Wash. IN 1992 THE park drew about people, he said, exceeding its best ever attendance by 25 per cent. The park employs between 800 and 1,000 workers in seasonal jobs. Extending Enchanted Parks seasonal business was his main priority with the hotelar'ena proposal, Moodenbaugh said. Amherstburg Mayor Bill Gibb is eager for the new owner to bring that same determination to Boblo.

Gibb, who lamented the first bidders intentions to scrap the park in favor of an island resort, was elated with news of a new owner. We wanted somebody who was going to be there for the long term and take what's there and improve on it, Gibb said. Its better than tearing everything down." Gibb said he has no objection to development on the island. But the scale of development proposed by the Michigan investors had Amherstburg area residents discouraged. It was a sober mood because people were saying here goes 95 years, its not going to be there for long.

Now all of a sudden, overnight, were told its going to be there and have a new lease on life. By David Morelli Star County Reporter AMHERSTBURG Boblo Island may have a new lease on life, less than a week after the death knell was sounded for the 95-year-old amusement park. If recent comments by the new owner are any indication, hell attempt to bring a year-round appeal to Boblo that will complement the rides and carousels, not replace them. Michael Moodenbaugh, a contractor and commercial developer and part-owner of a Seattle amusement and water park, was approved by a Minnesota bankruptcy court Wednesday as the new owner of Boblo Island. JUST A WEEK earlier, Moodenbaugh was the second-highest bidder for Boblo at a Detroit auction.

A Michigan-based group of investors made the winning bid of $3.8 million, and later targeted 1994 as the amusement parks final year of operation. In its place would be a myriad of developments, including a golf course, hotel, expanded marina, residential housing and condominiums. But the Michigan bid was rejected two days later by Boblos creditors. The bidders $250,000 deposit cheque bounced, despite being given a days grace to come up with the money. Moodenbaugh, who had bid $3.7 million, was declared the winner and now takes over his second amusement park in a year.

The $3.7 million has already been moved into a trust account, where it will sit until Moodenbaugh officially takes over, which is expected to be March 1. The suburban Seattle, resident could not be reached Wednesday in Minneapolis. But one of Boblo's bankruptcy lawyers said Moodenbaugh was excited about the upcoming season. MR. MOODENBAUGH is anxious to get into the park and get things moving so the park can open on time, said Lori Vosejpka, lawyer for International Broadcasting Corp.

Dror Zeiger-man said he is hopeful. But, the ball is in the hands of the Palestinians and Syrians," Zeigerman told about 120 people at the Jewish Community Centre. The diplomat talked primarily about the terror Israelis face at the hands of their hostile neighbors, but added he and all of Israel is optimistic peace can be achieved.

He assured his Windsor audience there will be some agreement for peace between Israel and Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon in 1993. Echoing Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, he said Israel is prepared to compromise and make territorial concessions in the Golan Heights. Canada has peacekeeping forces in the strategic Lebanon, but do not show acts of terrorism perpetrated by ugly fundamentalists, he said. Despite spending half of its budget on security, Israel is on an economic upswing, said Zeigerman, a graduate of George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Inflation in Israel, which has had inflation rates above 100 per cent, is currently at less than 10 per cent.

Israels national unemployment rate is equal to Canadas, despite the recent influx of 400,000 Russian and 250,000 Ethiopian refugees. ITS A good time to invest in Israel, Zeigerman told the crowd, pointing out one man who has recently built an apartment building there. Zeigermans visit was sponsored by a dozen local Jewish organizations. Allen Juris, executive director of the Jewish Community Centre, said Zeigermans visit was important to the community because its important to see the Israeli point of view. area, which may be a key to peace with Syria as the Sinai Peninsula was when Egypt and Israel signed a peace agreement in 1978.

The relationship with Egypt is real peace, and Israel is prepared for the same with its other neighbors, Zeigerman said. But the Palestinians we are not sure they really want peace." ZEIGERMAN also said the world must heed Irans arms buildup. Believe me, my friends, this regime in Iran is more of a threat than (Iraqi President) Saddam Hussein." Iran, with one of the largest conventional armies, is "the real threat to Europe and the world, Zeigerman said. Appointed last year to this, his first, diplomatic post, Zeigerman said Canada has a skewed view of whats going on in the Middle East. Most Canadians, he said, label Israel an aggressor.

Western television shows pictures of freezing deportees in Victim stabbed several times after her death Santosh Mehta was stabbed several times after her death, a general division jury was told Wednesday at the second-degree murder trial of Paul Sood. Dr. Marvin Oxley, a pathologist at Grace Hospital, testified that Santosh Mehta suffered some post mortem" stab wounds to her liver and small bowel. Oxley said the woman was stabbed a minimum of 46 times, including after death based on the fact there was no bleeding either internally or externally from two of the wounds in the liver and small bowel. Oxley also said there were some overlapping" wounds, meaning a stab wound on top of another.

The three or four wounds centred in the chest area affected the heart and lungs. But it was a deep laceration into the heart that probably caused her death, Oxley said. The wounds ranged from 1.5 to 3.2 cm in length. Those that penetrated her organs were between eight and 10 cm deep and the one to the liver, likely inflicted after death, was about 12 cm deep. She was also stabbed several times on the hands and forearm in what appeared to be an attempt to shield herself from the blows, Oxley said.

Her left thumb was nearly severed, which could have been a result of attempting to grab the knifes blade. Sood, a former two-time mayoral candidate in Windsor, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Santosh Mehta and her husband Ravin-dra. The two were found dead in the Hindu Mandir Temple May 17, 1992. Sood has admitted to the homicides, but says it was done in self-defence. iomi iftmtoiMiMai miaoiftif the long tern, pEJmybegUlpE chose our Bowlers can strike for Big Brothers Area bowlers will have a chance to chalk up strikes for the Big Brothers of Windsor and Essex County next month.

The annual Bowl for Big Brothers will take place at Empire Lanes in Ruth-ven on March 6 and the following weekend, March 13 and 14, at the Rose Bowl in Windsor. Mark Schilling, director of public relations for Big Brothers, said there are still some starting times available and emphasizes this is a non-competitive event. About 80 per cent of bowlers are non-league and nonprofessional, he said. Big Brothers pays for team bowling and shoe rental and also supplies door prizes. All we are asking (bowlers) to do is collect your pledges and bring them in on your bowling day, Schilling said.

Refusal to pay cab fare leads to other charges Windsor police recovered an electronic keyboard just after it-was stolen from a west end bar Tuesday night, because the suspects refused to pay their cab fare across town. Staff Sgt. Jim Evans said that shortly after 1 1 p.m., a man and woman took a taxi from Hurricanes Roadhouse on Sandwich Street to a tavern on Drouil-lard Road. Police were called when the cabbie complained he didn't get paid.

As police struggled to arrest the intoxicated man, the woman kicked an officer and later kicked at the window of a police cruiser. Officers then discovered an electronic keyboard stashed in her purse. They confirmed this equipment had just been stolen from Hurricanes. Sandra Spiers, 22, of Oak Avenue, is charged with obstructing police and possession of stolen property. Allen King, 28, of St Antoine Street, is charged with public drunkeness, resisting arrest and three counts of breaching a probation order.

Pair charged in break-in Two Windsor men face break-in charges, after they were chased from a west-side produce store early Wednesday. Staff Sgt. Jim Evans said officers were called to the 700 block of Universi ty Avenue West around 4 a.m., when they spotted two men coming out of the loading dock door of Thomson Produce. The other man had run back into Thomson's but then ran south from the building through an alley.

He was arrested in the 400 block of Park Street West by city police and a CP Railway officer. Evans said both men struggled with officers and bad to be handcuffed. Police later found the Thomson offices ransacked, with a number of valu ables placed on a desk. Entry had been gained through a basement window which had been blocked with steel bars and particle board.
