Star TV Writer, TORONTO After 31 episodes Wendy Crewson is finally finished with the CBC wartime drama, Home Fires. Npw shes headed for Paris for a four-week vacation. Dressed in purple suede boots, a blue and green -dress with sunglasses in her hair, Crewson, an energetic talker, looks like a hippcr version of the wholesome character, Terry, she plays on the series. Before she travelled to the French capital, she chatted about her career and future over a lunch of steak tartar in the posh Sanssouci restaurant at Sutton Place. Now in its fourth and last season, the series airs Thursdays at 8 p.m.

on the CBC Network (Channel. Still protective of the program, she is concerned about its new time and night. We have been moved to Thursday night which is very dis- appointing We are only on for eight weeks of the year and people are used to seeing us on Sunday -night. I dont think we are a Thursday show when people want a lot of action. Were the kind of program that you watch with your feet up after a big Sunday meal." Counterbalancing her disappointment about scheduling, Crewson admits she is glad the series, which inished shooting in the summer, is finally over.

However, the prospect of what she calls the black hole of unemployment is enough to cause a queasy feeling in the pit of her stomach. The original project was three years and I think three years might have been enough. It is refreshing to be out of the series and have your slate wiped clean and be ready to start again. With her trip to France ahead of her, and no prospects at the moment, the 27-year-old Crewson still considers herself a very lucky lady. Born in Hamilton, the eldest of three children of a salesman and a housewife, Crewson received a BA in drama from Queens University and stud- ied two years in England at the Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.

My only link to show business was a great- great uncle who was a strongman on a Mississippi paddlewheeler." After the compulsory stage work, her fresh good looks, won her the role in The War Brides, a CBC feature which led to the role of Terry Lowe on the finely crafty CBC series. Last season she also appeared in Mazes and Monster, a CBS Movie of the Week, which was shot in Toronto. It was a real eye-opener because everything I had done other than that had been for CBC. Its not that they work better or worse, they just work differently. 593 with trad 20" XL.lOQi 100 SOLID STATE FULLY AUTOMATIC 55477 Wendy Crewson of CBCs Home Fires which airs tonight at 8, Channel 9 One of the differences was the lack of dialogue between producers and actors.

With Home Fires we work on a lot Of rewrites. We improvise a lot and your input is 1 1 is essential we all work together." However, Rona Jaffe, author of Mazes and Monsters, and executive producer of the television movie, saw it in a different light. She didnt take very kindly to me telling her some of the lines were too literary and wordy and I really did refrain after that. Well, there was once or twice where I really did have to say something. 1 Crewson also discovered a difference between CBC and the major U.S.

networks when she talked with io-star Tom Hanks. He was the short one on the ABC series, Bosom Buddies. -He made $8,000 a week in his second year which is about what I made for a year (of Home Fires)." Crewson is reluctant to give away any secretsof coming episodes, especially since she incurred the wrath of executive producer Robert Sherrin last year when she blabbed that her husband was going to be killed in the raid on Dieppe. This much she will say: We finish the war, we introduce new characters, a baby is born and Sydney comes home and has trouble adjusting to civilian life." While Crewson obviously is ready for new challenges, she wont soon forget Home FireS. One effect has been to expand her record collection to include music from that era including Glen Miller, Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey.

Another has been a new perception of the Dieppe raid. When the 40th anniversay of Dieppe was noted in a newspaper it was an emotional moment for her. The headline caught my eye and I started to cry. It meant something to me. I felt the weight of that moment.

As for the future, Crewson says shes ready for movies and the big time: I dont want to play dinner theatre in Sudbury. Id like to have it so they want me, but Im not available," she says with a coy smile. Its Not Easy is aptly named, for it isnt easy to make a funny series about divorce and the 1980s version of the extended family. As a matter of fact, Ive yet to see a funny series on that subject. This ABC offering, which debuts tonight at 9.30 on Channel 7, has a good cast and decent enough wnt- 1 Not only do the various mates and their exs travel back and forth between the two households, but so do the offspring of these various unions.

Funny enough for you yet? Of course, there is the confusion inherent in having multiple parents. When someone says your father" the kids usually have to ask which one. Now, I suppose thats funny. Heck, Shakespeare built a whole career on situations which revolved around mistaken identity. 4 The danger with this series is not that it will be funny, but that it will make divorce and the new extended family more appealing than their real-life counterparts.

Also, it may appear to make this lifestyle preferable, to- the.more conventional one. Television has a way of doing that. In the TV movie about breast cancer, called First You Cry, the production was handled in such a way that the womans life seamed fuller and happier after she had breast cancer. Sure, there is something to be said for coping with such an event, but television is usually too simplistic in its solutions. Its Not Easv is played for laughs.

But to me marriage breakdown, divorce and step-parents arent that funny a subject. Carlene Watkins ing. I think the real problem is that divorce isnt a big. draw even if approximately 40 per cent of Canadian marriages and half of U.S unions end up in that very state. The premise for the series has a divorced man living next door to his former wife so that he can be close to the children.

Ken Howard plays the former husband, Carlene Watkins is his ex-wife and Burt Convy is the newest husband, who also has a former wife. Fortunately they either ran out of money, or it got too crowded, to cast her in this series h-h-ee cairv iLms ffon te ten a-ife gmreviTiTTt 1(1 (3Z3Hy niJIUij Q35T6) tHU (UEJHilfo 1TP lim ity aannnESit-1 czchp tloTs ruf- to fSAMYO TEPP'S BREAKS THE BETA VCR PRICE Enjoy BETA format picture quality high speed search quartz locked tape drive program ability digital time and more!
