feak Kneed Giraffe Still Can't Pet Feet Under Him Three Wives Just Too Much For Victor, Apparently sprawled spread-eagle on the concrete floor of his cage in the zoo in this town 70 miles southwest of London. Zoo officials speculated that 15-year-old Victor did the splits while mating with his three wives Domino, Drabbles and Arabesque. He has been unable to stand since Thursday. After efforts to raise Victor failed, Knowles told reporters. "Although he is eating, he is getting no better, so I cannot be optimistic about his chances of signs are unmistakable.

I am afraid he may have to be put to sleepi" While Victor's womenfolk craned their necks to watch, staff members at the zoo toiled for an hour with ropes and muscle power Saturday morning to move the giraffe's hind NEWS-HERALD, Panama City, Sunday, September 18,1977 Page 9A legs into a position where he could get up. Victor struggled gallantly. At one point. It appeared he would make it. But the middle-aged giraffe lost strength and sagged back to the ground belly-first with a gentle bump.

After a lunch of grass, Victor blinked his big, long-lashed eyes and lurched forward without any helping hands. Pushing with his hind legs and craning his eight-foot neck, he tried his best to stand. It was not to be. He toppled over onto his side a dangerous position for any giraffe, zoo officials said. "Anyone care to lend us some muscle to save Victor?" Knowles cried out after the beast's noble effort.

About 20 persons volunteered. Knowles marshaled his forces men and women, boys and girls along Victor's 18-foot length from tail to nostrils. A piece of strong sacking was pushed under the giraffe's neck as a makeshift sling. Everyone heaved and suddenly Victor was on his belly again with his four legs safely arranged. A few minutes later, Victor was taking things easy.

munching contentedly on another handful of grass. Giraffes live about 25 years in the wild and in captivity slightly longer. If they collapse in their natural habitat, they often are killed by meat-eating predators, zoo officials explained.
