TORONTO (CP) The father of Ontarios former United States trade representative says the government must end its silence on accusations of sexual harassment made against his son.

"If theres something to this, the authorities should say something," Theodore Masters said Tuesday from his office in Kingston, Jamaica. I just dont know about your politicians up said Masters, who said he wasnt aware until Tuesday of the allegations against his son, Carlton. I cant fathom this." Carlton Masters, 43, quit as the province's New York agent-general Friday to return to the private sector. His resignation came three months after he was accused of harassing two women under his su pervision. Ontario Premier Bob Rae has refused to comment on the allegations, citing privacy legislation that ap plies to complaints of sexual harassment.

"I accepted Mr. Masters's resignation because it was offered, Rae told Conservative Leader Mike Harris in the legislature. Harris accused Rae of making a deal with Carlton Masters "to stonewall" on the issue. Rae wouldnt comment. THE TORY LEADER later told reporters that callers to his office were asking if Rae was protecting Carlton Masters because he was black, unlike Raes former communications adviser, John Piper.

Rae angrily condemned Piper last month when he offered a newspaper information on a woman at the centre of a cabinet scandal in an attempt to discredit her. Piper quit. On Tuesday, Theodore Masters joined critics ranging from the opposition to an association of black professionals who have urged the government to come clean on the situation. The accusations have been investigated by a Toronto law firm, but officials there refuse to say anything, citing a provincial request. Theodore Masters was flabbergasted at the station, urging an airing of the government's conclusions because of the publicity given the allegations.

But he insisted his son couldnt be guilty. "Without getting information from him, I can tell you offhand, hes not that type of person, said Theodore Masters, 58. "He has grown up in a Christian environment and thats bolstered him throughout his life. Carlton Masters, a former Bank of Montreal executive, once wanted to be a priest and spent several years in a Roman Catholic order. The married father of three has been unavailable for comment, and his dad said Tuesday he would have a hard time reaching him.

Theodore Masters said his son told him two weeks ago he was returning to Toronto from New York, but provided no details. "He spoke to me and everything seemed all right," Theodore Masters said from the offices of Grace Kennedy, a Jamaican export firm where he works as a pension manager. "Im going to have words with him. Carlton Masterss departure more than 18 months after being appointed by Rae is the latest in several resignations to unsettle Ontarios first NDP government. Ambulance drivers don orange ribbons TORONTO (CP) Ambulance drivers in Ontario have decided to protest by wearing orange ribbons to back their demands for centralized emergency service across the province, a union spokesman said Tuesday.

"Its time to get going with this issue," Mark Lowell of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union said after meeting Health Minister Frances Lankin to push for consolidated emergency service. ABOUT 100 AMBULANCE officers protested earlier in front of the legislature, saying there should be uniform service in every region of the province, whether it's in urban or remote areas. A provincial government study has recommended a single service which would include standardized education, training and equipment but Lankin said she needs more time to study the report. Lankin said cabinet will deal with their demands once she has read the study done for the government on the way to cut through the myriad of administrative tangles facing emergency ambulance services. "I hear a lot from people in rural Ontario or Northern Ontario wanting to have enhanced services, she said outside the legislature.

"That's not something that can be done easily overnight." ZllBALY- Gyorgy, 66 years, December 6, 1992 at Grace Hospital.
