'The pill' helps spread AIDS STOCKHOLM (AP) Prostitutes in Africa who use birth control pills are two to three times as likely as other prostitutes to become infected with AIDS, researchers said Thursday. They said it is not known why birth control pills should increase a woman's risk of getting AIDS, but the pills can produce a condition that might serve as an entry point 1 for the virus into the bloodstream. The risk of getting AIDS through heterosexual contact also increases in people with such diseases as herpes, syphillis and chancroid, all of which produce genital ulcers or lesions, said Dr. King Holmes of Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Wash. Control of these and other genital ulcer diseases "should be the highest priority for controlling heterosexual AIDS transmission," Holmes said at the Fourth International Conference on AIDS.

In separate reports, researchers said they found no evidence of mental problems in people who are infected with AIDS but have not developed other signs of the disease. Earlier studies had suggested mental faculties might decline soon after infection with the AIDS virus, and the suggestion was made that infected people who were otherwise healthy should be removed from sensitive jobs. The new research suggests no basis for such action, researchers said. Acquired immune deficiency syndrome, a fatal disease for which no cure has been found, is caused by a virus that damages the body's immune system, leaving victims susceptible to infections and cancer. It is spread most often through sexual contact, needles or syringes shared by drug abusers, infected blood or blood products, and from pregnant women to their offspring.

Holmes, a specialist in sexually transmitted diseases, cited figures from the U.S. Centres for Disease Control showing the number of reported AIDS cases acquire through heterosexual contact has increased to almost four per cent now from about one per cent of the total cases in 1983. Among men, the percentage has increased seven to nine times, to between seven-tenths and nine-tenths of one per cent from one-tenth of one per cent, he said. In women, the percentage of heterosexually acquired cases is much higher. About 20 per cent to 30 per cent of AIDS cases in women in the United States were probably acquired through heterosexual contact, he said.

The problem is especially severe among minorities in the inner cities, the areas where prostitution and intravenous drug abuse are concentrated, Holmes said. "Programs for prevention of heterosexual transmission of HIV via sex with prostitutes are urgently needed in all countries," he said. Holmes recommended starting the programs in early adolescence because, "if you wait until 18 to give the lecture on AIDS, it's too late." The linking of genital ulcer disease and birth control pills with AIDS comes from studies by Francis Plummer and others in Nairobi, Kenya, Holmes told the conference. He said the pills can produce a condition called cervical ectopy in which part of the cervical lining is exposed to the vagina, and the exposed lining might be an entry point for the AIDS virus into the bloodstream. Genital ulcer disease presumably increases the AIDS risk by allowing the virus to enter the body through the ulcers, he said.

Pope urges Archbishop to stop consecration VATICAN CITY (AP) Pope John Paul has urged Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre to abandon a consecration of bishops that would split the Roman Catholic Church and probably get the rebel traditionalist excommunicated, the Vatican said Thursday. Creating bishops without papal permission is against canon. It seems a certain path to expulsion from the Catholic church for the French archbishop, who has rebelled for two decades against what he calls "selfdestructive" changes in the church. Without being specific, the Pope reminded Lefebvre by letter of "the inevitable theological and canonical consequences that are known to Leaders of the church in France, Switzerland and West Germany issued a joint statement Thursday urging Lefebvre to "to change his decision and we pray that he does not commit the unrepairable." Sailors rescued HONOLULU (AP) Five Costa Rican fishermen drifted about 5,800 km in five months after their boat ran out of fuel, surviving on rainwater and fish until their rescue 1,126 km southeast of Hawaii, the coast guard said Thursday. "We ate anything that came near our boat, such as fish, turtles and sharks," Joel Omar Gonzalez, one of the fishermen, told the coast guard. "We got water because it rained a few days and we managed to fill a lot of empty cans we had on board our boat." The Kinei Maru 128, a Japanese tuna boat, spotted the nine-metre Cadiro 3 adrift about southeast of Honolulu on Wednesday. The tuna boat rescued the men and left the Cadiro 3 drifting, said coast guard spokesman Jeff Crawley. The Cadiro 3 set out Jan.

19 from Puntarenas, Costa Rica, for an eight-day fishingt trip, he said. "A storm came upon us so we started heading for shore, but the winds were too strong and they pulled us out to sea," Gonzalez said. "We ran out of diesel and have been adrift ever since then." Crawley said as the boat drifted across the Pacific Ocean, the men ate anything they could catch. "We survived by throwing over bait which we had for our fishing trip," Gonzalez said. Crawley said the fishermen communicated with the coast guard via the tuna boat's radio.

All five were reported in good conditon. The Kinei Maru 128, which sails out of Iwate, Japan, was scheduled arrive in Honolulu on this morning, Crawley said. The last schism in the church occurred in 1870 over the dogma of papal infallibity. Lefebvre, 82-year-old founder of the traditionalist St.

Pius Fraternity based in Switzerland, said Wednesday he will consecrate four followers as bishops June 30. The fraternity was named after Piux who was pope in 1903-14 and who condemned religious modernism. THE VATICAN SAID in a statement Thursday that, in a May 5 protocol worked out by Lefebvre and the Vatican, the pontiff gave the archbishop permission to consecrate one bishop Aug. 15. Pope Paul VI barred Lefebvre in 1976 from saying mass and giving the sacraments, but the archbishop has ordained more than 200 priests who continue to use the 16th-century Tridentine mass, a Latin rite for which special permission is required.

His movement claims millions of followers worldwide. The statement Thursday said the Vatican issued a "pressing appeal to members of (Lefebyre's) Fraternity and their followers to rethink their position and remain united" with the Pope, "assuring them that all measures will be taken to guarantee their identity in. full communion with the Catholic church." Noting Lefebvre's announcement profound pain," the Vatican issued a chronology Thursday of its efforts in the last seven months to resolve the dispute. It also published the texts of the protocol and letters between the the archbishop and John Paul. Under the protocol, Lefebvre would have promised to be faithful to the church and Pope and to accept the teachings of the Second Vatican Council of 1962-65.

The council simplified and modernized the liturgy, instituting such reforms as celebration of the mats in the local language.
