C3 THE WINDSOR STAR, TUESDAY, MARCH 22, 1994 Morris baffles Toronto hitters Beach Grove mix works out right SPRING TRAINING By Jim Parker Star Sports Reporter For years Paulinka Rumfeldt was content to play on her women's curling team, while husband Rob Rumfeldt went off to play with the men at Beach Grove. Then, back In 1992, we decided to play with (Rldgetown's Bob and Janice) Ingram because we wanted to play at a cashsplel, Paulinka said. "We ended up winning it and got $3,000. The guys were like 'hey, we can win money with these girls. And, In two short years, the foursome has quickly risen to the top of the Ontario mixed curling scene.

"I don't think Its really hit me yet, Paulinka said. The Ingram rink, curling out of Ridgetown, captured the Ontario mixed curling championship in London in late February. Now, the foursome is set to head to Leduc, Alta. to begin play at the Canadian mixed curling championship, which gets underway on Friday. "It's nice to get something back like this, said Rob, who is a com-merical account manager for Toronto Dominion Bank.

"It makes the work the last five or six years something to look back on and you know youve gotten a payback." Rob and Bob Ingram have been together nearly four years playing mens cashspiels and their team played at the Ontario championship a year ago. "There's not really a lot of money In mixed, be said. "Most of the money Is on the men's side, but a lot depends on bow many weekends or Fridays you take off. "If you can get Russ (Howard) out of the scene you can make some money. I heard he's made $250,000 the last few years and Ed (Were-nicb) won four in a row this year and won $50,000.

With Janice as lead, Rob as second, Paulinka as vice and Bob as skip, the team has managed to make strides In mixed curling despite getting very little practice time together. "As a team, we probably wont get out much, said Paulinka, who is a systems engineer with Electronic Data Systems. "I still have my women's team and Rob still has bis mens team. It hasn't hurt the mix with all four intense competitors. "Ive always been Into the competitive side of it, Rob said.

"This (the Canadians) is quite a thrill, though. The thrill will continue at the national championship, where the foursome hopes to earn a berth in the semi-finals. I'd be happy to be in the top three and make the playoffs, Paulinka said. Im sure, though, that weU still get all the same knots and pressure once things get going. went l-for-4 with an RBI single and a walk.

He struggled in right field, dropping an easy fly. "For the first day, it was different," he said. Indians: It's an anniversary the Cleveland Indians wish they could forget One year ago today, Indians relief pitchers Steve Olin and Tim Crews died when the boat Crews was piloting slammed into a dock on Little Lake Nellie. Starting pitcher Bob Ojeda had his scalp torn open in the accident but returned to pitch later in the season. The Indians chose to deal with the tragic anniversary as privately as possible today, closing their clubhouse to reporters and planning no memorial service or moment of silence prior to their game.

The only public acknowledgement that this day was different from any other? The flag at Chain Lakes Park was to fly at half-staff. You walk a fine line between underplaying it and overplaying it," general manager John Hart said. "Were working without a script, and were trying to do it right Tigers: Ricky Jordan and Kim Batiste each drove in seventh-inning runs as the Phillies downed the Tigers, 7-5. For Detroit, Chris Gomez had a inside-the-park homer and Junior Felix hit two doubles. Star News Services Jack Morris all but clinched a spot in the Cleveland Indians' pitching rota tion by beating his former Toronto teammates Monday.

Morris, 38, pitched six scoreless in nings in a 6-3 Cleveland victory in Winter Haven, yielding four hits, walking four and striking out three. He lowered his earned-run average to 1.69 in four pre-season starts. Toronto declined to pick up Morriss option for 1994 after he went 7-12 with a 6.19 ERA during an injury-plagued 1993. Morris was 21-6 with a 4.04 ERA for Toronto in 1992. Cleveland signed him to an incentive-laden contract that guarantees him at least $350,000 if hes on the roster opening day April 3.

"Not a lot of knowledgeable people think the Indians are favored to win the World Series but a lot of people think there's a chance, said Morris. "Theres some good things happening around here. Paul Sorrento hit a three-run home run, his first, off Todd Stottlemyre to cap the Indians four-run first Candy Maldonado added an RBI double in the seventh. Alex Gonzalez, Torontos rookie shortstop hopeful, doubled home all three Blue Jays runs. Jordan: Far beyond the fence at Ed Smith Stadium, back where the big leaguers do not stray, Michael Jordan quickly learned about life in the minors.

There was no scoreboard, no du-gouts and only two umpires on the field where Jordan played Monday. As expected, the Chicago White Sox reassigned Jordan to their minor-league camp in the morning. I dont feel disappointed, because what I tried to do was a Iongshot by any standards, Jordan said. I can utilize this opportunity to improve my skills. Jordan, a three-time MVP in the NBA, said he would play a year in the minors if he and the White Sox thought he had a chance at making the majors.
