January 4 The citizens of the Fifth Ward considerably stirred up over the report published in the Eagle that a bill would be introduced at an early date to malic it a town of Nassau County. Those opposed to the movement say that there is no sentiment in the ward worth mentioning in favor of the movement, and that they have the signatures of ST9 out of the 1,201) voters of the ward in opposition to the measure, and that these voters represent over To per cent, of the assessed valuation of the entire ward. These names, they say, will be increased to over this year, when a more thorough canvass will be made in opposition to the measure. The Buard of Supervisors of Nassau County is on record as being strongly opposed to the measure, a resolution to that effect having been passed by the board. Assemblyman Doughty ithdrew the bill last year when he learned of the general opposition to it, and said hr would never have introduced it had the feeling of the people and of the supervisors not been misrepresented to him.

It is said by an intimate friend of the assemblyman that he said he would not touch the bill again. A well known taxpayer of Far Rockaway, in sneaking of the proposed measure, said: sook and cambrics, daintily trimmed with laces, Point de Paris or Cluny; others with dainty fine embroideries; among these are high and low neck gowns, petticoats and underskirts, corset covers, chemises and drawers, slightly soiled from handling, at extraordinary prices. In the first place, as soon as we seceded we would ho compelled to assume a debt of 51.000,000.

all of which is cow a part of the bonded debt of New York City, which, in the event of us going out of Queens Borough to Nassau County, would all be put baelt upon us. 'I his debt was incurred in building our fine new school houses, our macadam and brick paved streets and our sewer system. "Moreover, owing to the character of the ward as a great summer watering place it costs a large sum to properly police the territory and to maintain the courts, and when we come to add to the cost of our schools the lighting of our streets, the maintenance of Fire Department and the maintenance of our first class sewer works, the total is an appalling one. "In fact, were this proposed change to take place our tax rate, which this year is less than 2 per would go up to over 6 per cent, and bankruptcy would stare us in the face. "The very rapid growth of Far Rockaway and Rockaway Beach during the past year is because it has become a part of New York City and property owners are assured of the protection of a well established city government and a low rate of taxation.

"Honey has been much more easily obtained on bond and mortgage in all this section since it has become a part of New York City and property has rapidly advanced in value. Over $600,000 worth of buildings have been erected in this ward since July 1 last, and the prospect for this year is a still more brilliant one. I hope it will not be ruined by any such disturbing, disquieting movement as the proposal to make a sepa White Sale Values in Ladies' Underwear such low prices not only are they all of our regular stock left over from the season's selling, but we've added some extraordinary purchases from prominent manufacturers with belated stocks. Smith A Is right. As parchesl is usually played it is only a throw of double six that entitles the player to another throw, but if the rule described is followed, it is evident that the player cannot enter a man on the same throw that sends the man back. It is the successive throw of doubles that sends the man to the starting point, and of course, is a disadvantage. It would not be permissible to use one of these throws for the entrance of a man which would be an advantage. might as well claim the privilege of entering the man, in case the first throw instead of the third had been the double lives.

The absence of professional base ball In the big cities along the Hudson River has led to the organization of the Central League, which will be composed of eight clubs, representing Newburgh, Poughkeepsle, Kingston, Port Jer vls, Amsterdam, Johnstown, North Adams and Pittsfleld, the latter two being Massachusetts towns. The league was informally organized at a meeting in the office of I. Trimble, 1,845 Atlantic avenue, Brooklyn, the following being present: John Howe and Robert Strong, representing Newburgh; James McDonald and Michael Lebane, Poughkeepsle, Christy Hassett and Myron Allen, Kingston: Thomas McGuIrk and Joseph Ridnler, Port Jervls. The above mentioned are all old time ball players, several of them having flourished in American Association days. The four cities represented at the meeting are certain of having teams in the league, and Messrs.

McGuirk and Hassett were appointed a committee of two to visit the other four cities and secure delegates to atteud the next meeting, to be held at the Astor House, on or about January 15. Sam Crane, who piloted the Atlantic League a few years ago, will he asked to take the office of president. The new league promises to be a compact affair and the indications are that It will be a success, as there has been no professional base ball in that section for a number of years and the rivalry among the cities, especially Newburgh, Poughkeepsle, Kingston and Port Jervis, is keen. Hustling managers who desire the franchises in the other four cities named should address Thomas McGuirk, 62 Lawrence street, Brooklyn. Yale's basket ball team suffered another defeat last night on its Western trip this time at the hands of the Company I five of Kenton, O.

The score was 14 to 10. The contest was interesting and exciting throughout. The collegians were ahead until the last five minutes. A surprising feature of the game was the absence of fouls, only eight occurring throughout the conflict. Yale has evidently learned a lesson in regard fouls, which have cost her two or three games on the present trip.
