Until then, they dance barefooted to cha-cha-cha and foekr, and-roll rhythms blaring from radios and juke boxes in the scores of bistros. They laugh with the sudden exuberance of youth and they talk the endless, terribly serious talk of youth. When they finally do think vof sleep, they go to a fisherman's cottage where three or four may share a room, or even to a spot on the beach.

Rubber mattresses are at a premium, for Saint Tropez is bursting at the seams. Of course, Brigitte, who has spent most of the summer here France's "beat generation" and Saint Tropez is their paradise. The village has irany of the same attractions that the famous resorts mch as Cannes, Juan-les-Pins, and Monte Carlo have bright sun, blue sea, ami a pebbly beach. It even has snobbishness but it is a nobbishness based on a commodity that money and social position can't buy. It is the snobbishness of youth.

This is the one spot on the enchanted shore of the French Riviera where a celebrity, if middle-aged, causes not the slightest ripple. Getting accepted into Saint Trop" (as the young call it) society is not easy for anyone over 30. The first thing the initiates do on arrival is to go to the shop run by Madame Vacbon to buy the sea-aon's "uniform." This year it consists of brief shorts or skintight pants topped by a boldly patterned blouse and an amusing hat. The Bikini, which this year is the barest wisp of a loincloth, is accepted but considered slightly exaggerated. Once the pitfall of the wrong outfit is avoided, there remains the acid test in the underground cabarets where Saint Trop' meets, at night.

If the vacationer is offered a table, it means that he has been mistaken for somebody of importance. If he or she is greeted with a curt' "This is a private club," they may just as well forget about night life in Saint Tropez and go back to the casino at Cannes or Monte Carlo. If he is allowed to drape himself across the bar, then he is "in." But he still has another test to pass. If the man calls for champagne in a loud voice, he will be served, but to the accompaniment of smug smiles all around. Immediately he will be classed as a vacationing traveling salesman.

Those who pass these tests find themselves in the company of hundreds of girls trying to look, sound and act like Brigitte Bardot, accompanied by crew-cut young men trying just as hard to look like James Dean or Marlon Brando.
