The day lor polo waa excellent and the turf fine. The match was played wh.li jrreat clash and vim.

Neither team could score in the first two periods and it was only after the most desperate work on foe part of the Meadowbrook team that they managed to lower the colors or the Rockaways. The score was: Meadowbrooks, goals; Rockatvays, 2 goals. The 2 goals for the Rockaway team were both made by Stanley Mortimer, the veteran player of the club. The attendance was one of the largest ever seen on the grounds.

Several hundred people crowded the spacious lawns, and the piazzas surrounding the club house. The paddock was fillet! with four in hands, carts, drag3 and chicles of all In the road surrounding the club were several hundred people In carriages who drove to the grounds from the nearby summer resorw. The teams wore in the pink of condition and played an excellent game, both Individually and In team work. Foxhall Keene and Harry Payne Whitney by their many brilliant rushes, and side, and crc.j work, won much applause, aa did Codvln and Baldwin by their brilliant rushes, and riding off. The two bucks played their position perfectly and on a number of occasions saved their goals.

The other members of the tennis did very creditable work in both team and Individual plays, and in their front and back hota, which were very effective. So exciting was the game that in endeavoring to reach the ball in th? second period, collision occurred between Eustis. and Water bury, while running their ponies to their utmost. Both men and ponies rolled over in a heap on the turf, bu tnone was hurt beyond a slight shaking up. The game was resumed almost Immediately.

There was some interesting play in the Middle States lawn tennis chatnpiouship tournament at Orange, X. yesterday afternoon. The preceding matches had narrowed the number of contestants and they were of the ranking class. The most exciting match was that of W. A.

Larned and Dwiglit Davis, the Harvard crack, who carne so near to winning the national championship at Newport last season. The Harvard player led the first set to 3 1, but his famous adversary pulled up and forced a long deuce vantage set before the victory fell to Davis. Again In the st.ond set Davis had the lead, but Larned pulled out handsomely. Tho Harvard man played a remarkably fart game at the net and voikyed in excellent form, which gave him a decided advantage over his opponent, who appeared to favor lUa back court game. Tl.ls unfinished match will be continued thin afternoon und additional interest is attached thereto, because or the agreement to count It as one of the Inier eity series, Davis playing for Boston and learned for New York.

Second Moor, Fourth avenue. i Nearly 2,200 Pupils Are Now Eligible for Higher Courses of Study. PERCENTAGE RECORD BROKEN. Twenty six Parochial Schools Qualify 245 Students Names of the Graduates.

Probably never before have the public schools of Brooklyn made so flue a showing In their graduating classes as the records for thre term just closed present. While this statement applies directly to these classes, the fact remains that the training received la the lower grades is mainly responsible for the splendid results. Brooklyn's public school system is recognized throughout the country as one of the very best In operation, a fact that is made evident by the large number of outside educators, who seek to gain admission to it. But one. serious fault can be found in it, and that Is the effort made to give too many studies to the pupil, thereby sacrificing thoroughness In some of the essential branches.

But, however that may be, the fact remains that the total number graduated in June from the public schools was 1,943, which, added to. the 1.6 J7 graduated in January, makes the total number of. pupils leaving the grammar schools with honors and eligible to admission to the high schools as the work of the last Bchool year, 3,570. To this total of seekers for high school in struction must be added the graduates from the parochial schools 245 in June and 74 in January, a total of 319. The difference in the figures for June and January is caused by the fact that these schools have generally but one graduating period.

The whole number of pupils in the graduat lng classes in the forty four grammar 'schools In Brooklyn was 2.1S7. Of this number 1,218 were graduated without examination, by exemption based on their class record for the whole term. Of the remainder 725 passed the graduating examinations successfully, making a total of 1,943, or 90 per eligible for high school admission. This was the first time In the history of the schools that these exemptions from examination were officially recognized, although a year ago Dr. Edward G.

Ward, borough superintendent of schools, Instituted the departure in accordance with the authority vested in him by law. His first effort to have 'the. School Board indorse the step was made then, and not successfully, nor did he succeed In January. But since then the members of the School Board have seen the light and have accepted the mandate of progressive ideas. In this exemption the parochial and other private schools of Brooklyn are privileged to participate on the same basis as the public schools.

In the lists following it will be noticed that several of the parochial schools which were the only private educational institutions that elected to enter their pupils for the high school privileges do not show any names of pupils passed by exemption. Two reasons are assigned for this. The first is that some of these school were not able at this time to meet one of the general requirements, and the second is that several of the parochial schools preferred not to avail themselves of the privilege of exemption, electing rather to give pupils the benefits of the examinations and to have them enter the high schools on, the percentages they made in them. In January last the number of pupils In the graduating classes of the then 42 grammar schools of Brooklyn was 2,020. There were no exemptions, and the whole number of graduates was 1,627, or over 80 per cent.

In June, 1898, the number of pupils was 2,123, of whom 1,003 were exempted from the examinations and 769 graduated on examination, a total of 1,772, or 84 per cent. The banner grammar school this term was No. 77, on Second street, near Sixth avenue, of which Channing Stebbins Is principal, graduating 107 pupils out of a possible 110. The work in the parochial schools shows that in the graduating classes In twenty six institutions there were 26G pupils. Of these, 103 were exempted and 142 passed the examinations, or 92 per cent.

In January last but sixteen r'hesc schools participated, the others haviirg but one graduating period. Then there were 119 pupils, of whom 74, or 64 per passed. In June. 1S98. twenty two parochial schools had 182 pupils in their graduating classes, out of which number 132, or 71 per passed the examinations.

And all of these pupils who applied for admission were entered In one or another of the high schools. Just how many of the 2,188 boys and girls will apply for admission to the high schools in September cannot, of course, be known at this time. But Superintendent Ward states that no applicant will be turned away and that every one will find accommodation. This is assured by Dr. Ward, who only recently was clothed with power by the School Board to convert every class into a short time class, If need be, to provide schooling until greater facilities are at hand.
