Karate demonstration set for Funfest I Events 48 August 6, 1986 Lithuanian Day set at Rocky Glen Park Campbell said a skillful person uses his hands and feet to strike an opponent in self-defense. Kempo is a softer style of karate that relies on relaxed movements and internal energy. Okinawan weapons are the traditional stick weapons of Bo, Sai and Nunchaku; as well as Kama and Tonfa, two other weapons. In studying the martial arts, students earn levels or belts -to show what they have accomplished. Campbell himself a third-degree black belt has been studying the arts for 13 years.

The highest level anyone can achieve is 10th level black belt. And on Funfest Saturday, people in center-city Hazleton will have the rare opportunity to see someone who has achieved an eighth degree black belt while studying martial arts in Japan. Campbell's teacher Shihan Roger Wehrhahn will also be a part of the Okinawan weapons demonstration. Wehrhahn holds a fifth degree in Goju ryu karate, fourth degree If you missed the Karate Kid. you still have a chance to see the art of karate perfected as part of Furiest '88.

On Sept. 6, instructors and students from Cross winds Karate Kai will give a demonstration of their skills in front of the school at 61 N.Wyoming St. Beginning at 3 p.m., head instructor Richard Campbell and about a dozen of his students will perform four methods of karate. They are Ju Karate, Kempo and Okinawan weapons. Campbell, who is referred to as "Sensei," or teacher, by his students, described each technique that will be involved in the demonstration.

Ju Juitsu, translated into English, means gentleness. It involves locks, throws and pressure points its self defense and is the combat form of judo," Campbell explained. Karate, most people believe, is chops and kicks as they see in Saturday afternoon reruns of old movies. But the word karate means "empty hands," and Kanjorski phone-in et August 13 Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski, ID-Pa) will open the telephone lines to his Washington office on Aug.

black; belt in Shorin ryu karate, and received his eighth degree black belt while studying under Higaonna Sensei during many trips to Japan. Wehrhahn is the head of the Olympic Karate Instructions in Nutley, N.J., Campbell said, and he is also a swordsman. "He's extraordinary it's really something special to see. and people who do" see him will be very lucky," Campbell said. Also as part of the demonstration, the school will have an open house for people who want to learn more about classes or martial arts.

About 120 people are enrolled in the classes now, but Campbell said there is always room for more. "With classes, students learn self-defense, fitness, discipline 'and courtesy," Campbell said.
