"The dullness which has prevailed in tho wool market has given way to a comparatively active demand for the raw material. The increased firmness witnessed in the London wool auction sales in the last few days has been reflected in the domestic it being evident to. buyers that prices are not llkejy to be any lower for the present at WAIXABOTJT MARKET. Jan. Jan. Jan. tions of weakening freight rates and this may be accompanied by a larger movement. There is nothing yet in the reports of damage from tho West to cause any uneasiness.

The market was active and irregular this morning. The opening was lower, on some disappointment at the foreign news, but later there was a sharp advance and active trading. The Liverpool market opened up but closed at advance. Other English markets were steady. Paris showed excitement and this excitement was what influenced prices here.

Paris advanced in wheat 15a55 centimes and in flour 35a80 centimes, making a rise equal to 4a2 3 5c. There were reports of good export business late yesterday and export bids were reported better to day. The weather was cold at the West and Northwest receipts, including Chicago, were only 314 cars, against 574 last year. The world's exports were estimated at 4.800,040 bushels. Wheat was quiet but steady at the close, losing most of the rise.

A report was current that tho port of Buenos Ayres as well as Ro sario was closed. Cash wheat was dull. Shippers took loads. The price of Produce Exchange membership Btill interests the members. A sale was made yesterday at for a high grade ticket.

Prices are about the same as before the vote. The corn market has moved along in a narrow way this week, with prices showing a steady tone, hut there has been no enthusiasm to the trade. The fact Ib that the market has been somewhat influenced by the lack of cash demand, and the fact that there i3 steady accumulation in the visible supply points, although the volume of movement is small. This week there has been a further falling off in the receipts and the arrivals are only half of last year. Toward the close of the week there was a considerable increase in the volume of export demand, both at New York and outports, show.ing a continuation of the inquiry abroad.

The actual clearances increased considerably and are also larger than last year. The corn mrket was moderately active and weaker, notwithstanding the strength in wheat, and sold off slightly during the morn 7.00 7.05 7.10 7.15 7 0 7.25 7. 0 June 7.00 10 July 7.0510 August 7.0510 September 7.15211 October Jh November 7 2025 December 7.3035 Total sales, 21.250 bags. The oil markets continued active and strong. Crude was exceptionally strong, further advances being made all along the decline in the credit balance market. Pennsylvania was marked up to Tiona to Barnesville to Corning to 51.51; Newcastle to North Lima to $1.24, and South Lima and Indiana to $1.19.

Prices for refined were firm and unchanged. Field work continues active, but only one or two strikes of importance were made. The search for new territory continues, and operators are taking advantage of every opportunity to increase the production. Interest this week was centered in the Stout district on the Hughes River, in Doddridge County, W. where an extension and soma new production are expected.

The well which was drilled by the Carter Oil Company and started at ten barrels a day has increased its production to sixty barrels a day. Other wells have been drilled with production ranging from five to thirty barrels per day. Refined petroleum closed at 9.90 cents per gallon in barrels and 7.25 cents in bulk at New York, Philadelphia prices being on a basis 5 points lower. Foreign quotations were: London, 73 for imperial gallon; Antwerp, 2sYi francs per 100 kilos, and Bremen, 8.45 marks per fifty kilos. THE WEEKLY METAL REVIEW.

In reviewing the metal markets for the week ended yesterday it may bo stated that they were very dull. The copper market has not changed at all and little or no business was done. The tone of the market for lead was steady and prices were unchanged. The iron market was extremely quiet. Tho price of spelter has been advanced considerably on higher European markets.

It is stated in the trade that the advancing tendency of this alloy has been caused by the strikes of coal miners in Bohemia. The tin market vacillated during the week and its closing tone was firm. Tin plates have been firm. NOTES OF THE MARKETS. Indianapolis The conference between the coal mine operators and the miners' committee appointed to fix a scale for 1900 has resulted in a good deal of ill feeling and there are indications of a failure to reach an agreement.

The operators offer an advance of 10 cent3 a ton, but the miAers refuse to consider any other question until the screen system and the differential between pick and machine mined coal questions are disposed of. They declare that, a failure to agree on a scale will result in calling out 100,000 miners in the four states represented in the conference. Chicago The Shoe and Leather Review says: "The packer hide market is dull. A few tanners who are short of branded bides are compelled to buy an Occasional car or two, but the movement of native hides is very slow. There has been a considerable increase of late in the importations of green salted hides, showing that, with the duty added, hides can be brought in cheaper from abroad.

Wo quote: Native steers, 13c; butt brands, 12c; Texas, Colorado steers and branded cows, llc and heavy and light native cows, Hc." European sugar cables firmer. January and February beets are higher at 93 S'id for both months. Domestic refined sugars are unchanged at 5.15c for fine granulated. Raws are strong at 16c higher; centrifugals 4 7 16c; muscavados, 4c. The Textile Manufacturers' Journal says: "The sales of wool in the principal markets of the country for the week ending January 26 amount to 7,535,000 pounds domestic, 3,051,000 pounds foreign, aggregating 10,586, 000 pounds, as compared with 5,083,000 pounds domestic, 1,061,500 pounds foreign, a total of 6,144,500 pounds for the preceding week.
