The cress Is the bsdsre of the King's daughters, a society orcanizud by Mrs. Margaret Bottsme, a well known New York society woman, on January 13. 1886, bo that yesterday was tho society's sixth birthday.

Perhaps a quotation from a pamphlet issued by the daughters will give the bout idea of the spirit by which they are animated: "Like tho wind that bloweth where it listeth, a now spirit of unity and fellswsb.il in faith, bops and Ioto has been movincfor a long time past npou the hearts of Christian everywhere. Many listening souls in many placos have been hearinz tho sound thereof, and recognizing: the heaTonly 'father's voice. In answer to that inward call. Christian hearts drew nearer to each other, until a little company of ten women united to form an sratward union to embody the union of spirit already born of God. After consideration of tho Rood to be gained and the good te be done by Tending themselTes together by a triple cord, "whose strands were faith, hope and charity, they decided to organize themselves into an order or sisterheed or service, hoping by this closer anion to increase their usefulness many fold." Mrs.

Bottome was elected president, and she still holds that position. A circle which spreads round the earth has grown from the ltttlo band organized six years ago. Accenting te the constitution of the King's daughters the object of the society is "to develop spiritual life and stimulate Christian activity." Numberless Doer families have been aided. Christmas trees have been laden with delights for hundreds of little waifs, and perhaps, better than all, the GREAT CLEARING OUT SALE IS OUR. CLOAK DEPARTMENT TO MAKE ROOM FOR ALTERATIONS.

But the pictnrcaqne. if more plebeian, vacabondago of tho era of highwaymen and child stealers still awaits scientific treatment. No one, ta onr knowledge, has as yot become the sober historian of the beggars, gypsies, footpads and other nameless rascals whom the age of Anne and the earlier Goorges comprehensively referred to as the canting crow. And yet, from any point of view, these gentry deserve serious attention, but most, as their name implies, from that of language. To anyone who will look into the matter in the light of such classics as the "New Canting Dictionary," published in 1725, or the "Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue," which saw the light sixty years later, it will at once become apparent that jauch of our latter day slang; nay, more, many of our most vigorous idioms and phrases, are of picturesquely rascally descsnt.

So much is this the case that hosts of words set down as uncouth and techuioal in the pages of the two books above referred to are actually more familiar to than their eighteenth century interpretations. "Silence," however, used in such a conjunction is canting English. A richly dressed woman, rolling thronga the orowded streets in her carriage not leng ago, lost her King's daughters badge.

It was a little newcgirl who picked it up and came running after. "You've lost your King's daughter badge," said the breathless urchin. "Why, child, how did you know that was a King's daughter badge;" asked the occupant of the carriage. Unfortunately for the dramatic completness of this incident the sequel is not known, but it is safe to say that the sows girl afterward found life bettor worth living.

K. SMITH WHITK with you for 40s. Whoso now talks "grinders" forteoth is net held to be tiling very eccentric, or even slangy, English. In old days, hewevor. only the canting crew used the term.

In the report of a fire we read of a house being "gutted." Originally to "gut" a house maat to rifle er ransack it. "Giggling" is now a harmless schoolgirl fashion; among the canters it was loud, unlovely laughter, and "gigglers" were ladies who picked pockets while they made love. "Sneak," toe. is still a canting word in 1723. "Ho gees upon the sneak at Darkmans" is said of a thief who prowls at twilight.

Or modern schoolboy slane tho "Canting Dictionary" csntains some very familiar specimons, such as "grub" ami "cove." "Fag." however, originally meant "to beat," and instead of carrying with it its moders sense "queer," is always used as a complimentary epithst or suffix. Thus a "nun dell" is a pretty lass; a "ram degen," a silvered hilled sword; "rum kicks," breeches richly trimmed with cold or silver galloon; and "rum sutlers," canary wine or rich food. "Kumvil" stand, for Loutlou. Uttt possibly the Hiiflisaisy hers be derivabls from "ruin," eastern name for Constantinople. The gypsies certainly brought into Kii tiand quite a vocabulary of quaint foreign words, some of which are ancient enough.

"Togs," for instance, is the same word as "togonians." which is traced back by the editor of the tVctionary to "toga." on the analogy of "panrainVand "exsan," which conn respectively front "panis" There is a venerable flavor of antiquity also about "patri Or VVV A AA A A A A A A A A A A AAAA A A A A I A i A 207 MONTAGUE ST.
