Out for Beef Pot Roast By MARY MOORE There is a certain dearly beloved and always Indulged member of our family who thinks beef should be roasted or broiled always.

I decided in a rare moment of rebellion I wanted a pot roast with snowy mashed potatoes (if any of you have electric mixers and do not use them whipping the boiled potatoes into a snowy mass of mashed ones you are missing a good trick) and some of that gravy impossible to achieve without a pot roast. It turned out to be a success but at first grudgingly then as the doubts cleared I received a whole hearted compliment and felt like a school-girl making her first cake. The pot roast, of course, was only two-thirds the price of an oven roast that didnt hurt my feelings. In the first place, women would be better choosers than men, just as they are better shoppers. They wouldn't marry for a pretty face, as men so often do.

They would consider what was inside of a mans head as well as what was outside of it, and whether he would be likely to make an interesting companion for the next 31 or 40 years, or bore them to tears. Strong, Mrs. James Hogan, Mrs. Fred THRIFTY WASH FLAT Also, it would make for happier marriages for women to be able to select their mates, because it would, at least, give -them a chance to get the men they want Instead of having to taka the ones they can get. This ould be a twofold blessing that would redound to the well-being of the man well as the woman, for the wife who has gotten her hearts desire in husband is always happy and contented and on her tip-toes to please him.

Almost invariably the peevish, fretful, nagging wife is one who married her opportunity instead of her preference. PIECES IRONED 7c ib. SHIRTS IRONED lOo By HERMAN; N. BUNDESEN, M.D. There are certain types of injuries which are developed not only by soldiers, but also, frequently, by civilians.

One of these is known as march fracture. This is a break in ond or more of the bones of the foot known as the metatarsals. The metatarsals are just behind the toes. Doctors 1 a rence W. Hullinger and William L.

Tyler of Ohio and Kentucky, respectively, do not believe that these fractures develop because of any ness of the foot but rather because of tiring of the muscles and ligaments. As fatigue increases, a person who is walking does so, not with his muscles in tone, but relaxed and tired. The weight is borne by the bones and ligaments and not by the muscles. This permits repeated movement of the bone Itself, which finally breaks, much the same as a piece of wire will break if it is bent repeatedly. There are certain factors which make it more likely that march fracture will occur.

These include lack of rest, overwork and weak muscles. It would not appear that persons who are overweight tend to have this kind of fracture more often than those whose weight is normal. LIMP SYMPTOM The symptoms of march fracture include a limp on walking, swelling and redness of the back of the foot, and tenderness over the point where the break has occurred. There is a great deal of pain when the foot is bent. If a person after walking a long distance, has pain in the foot together with some swelling, an X-ray should be taken at once to determine if break in the metatarsal bones has occurred.

Not all these fractures are visible in the X-ray plate. However, if the first X-ray does not show break in the bone, after several days another X-ray should be taken. There are other conditions which may produce symptoms similar to those of march fracture. These in elude inflammation of the sheaths around tendons, sprains, strains, inflammation of a bursa, which is sac containing fluid, and foot pain which may be produced by flat feet and other causes. The treatment of the march fracture consists of the application of light plaster cast which runs from the tip of the toes to the middle third of the leg.

About a month of treatment on the average is necessary before cure results. It would appear inadvisable for many persons to attempt to walk long distances, particularly when they are fatigued, since fracture of the metatarsal bones may result. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS L.K.: Would you please tell me the cause of pimples on the back? Answer: I have outlined some sug gestions concerning pimples and black heads which I shall be glad to send to you if you will write again, enclosing a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Your name will not be used. R.J.D.: I am troubled with a great deal of gas around my heart.

What causes this and is it serious? Answer: There is no such thing as gas around the heart. Pain around the heart may be due to many causes. It is usually due to some disturbance other than heart disease. It may be due to gallbladder disease, ulcer of the stomach or some similar disturbance. You are in need of a thorough examination by a physician so that the cause of the trouble may be found and proper treatment carried out.

Of course, you may say that most women see tbeir husbands before tbeir husbands ever see them, and know more about how it came about that they are Mrs.

Smith or Mrs. Jones than Mr. Smith or Mr. Jones will ever know. But, even so, they have to work under cover, and that cramps their style.

They cant come out frankly and above-board and sell themselves to the man they want, as a man does to a girl when he goes a-courting. At any rate, we will soon see bow the theory works out in real life, for in these war times, with a husband shortage looming on the horizon, girls are not waiting to be asked.

They are popping the question themselves and hustling the bridegroom to the altar. Hence the boom in the matrimonial market.
