BTT8IHE8S AUOTIOfi WEDNESDAY EVENING, JANUARY 14. By Telegraph to the Daily Eagle. looking owl, returning your gaza with a seriocomic air, reminding you of Poe's raven perched over the door. His paintings are mostly, landscapes, one or two of them very fine Winter scenes. Some of his friends have just made him a present of a fine large painting, which has a place over his mantle piece.

The engravings are partly ideal heads of children and youth, and some pictures of domestic life, a head of Luther, and a few other celebrities. As is well known, Mr. Beecher possesses a large fond of sociality, and makes an excellent and welcome companion. He has been made acquainted, by experience, with all phases of life, and is able to adapt himself to the enjoyments and ideas of any mind." Coroner's Inquesns. Coroner Redding held an inquest yesterday upon the body of Mary Barnard, an aged lady who was injured some two weeks since by being run over in Fulton avenue, from the effects of which she died. Also, upon the body of Eliza Ann Smith, a young lady on a visit to a family at No. 55 Douglass street, who died suddenly of congestion of the lungs. Likewise upon Daniel Jones, of Cold Spring, L.

who was an a visit to the city with his wife. He was seized with apoplexy in the street and was taken Swift's Montague Hotel where he died. Verdicts were Tendered in all the three' cases in accordance with the facts stated. A lecture will be delivered on Friday evening at the Atheneum by Rev. Dr.

Chapin far the benefit of the Children's Aid Society. It is unnecessary to speak oi the merits of Dr. Chapin as a lecturer and we doubt not the lecture room will be crowded. Lecture. The course, consisting of five lectures, given under the auspices of the Young Men's Christian Association at the Clinton avenue Congregational Church, were brought to a close last evening.

The association have had the misfortune of having very disagreeable weather on almost every night of their lectures, owing to which the number in attendance has not been as large as it otherwise would have been. The lecture last evening was delivered by Mr. Curtis, upon the life and writing of Charles Dickens. It was delivered repeatedly last winter and this season, so that any further notice of it would be preposterous. eum.The City Gronadiers' Armory, Poplar Hall, having been destroyed by Are on Tuesday, tho 6th instant, thereby depriving them of their drill room, together with tho total loss of their arms.

And tho voluntary and generous manner in which their military friends had sympathised with them in thoir adversity, by offering to provide Tor them until they can again find suitable head quarters. They would theroforo return their sincere thanks to the National Guard, Capt. Sprague the City Guard, Capt. Thome the Steuben Guard, Captain Schepper, and the Franklin Guard, Capt. MoNary, for the liberality manifested by thorn.

Their unprompted offering again reassures us of the kindness and friendship which they have evor been ready to bestow upon us. Hoping that the courtesy thus evinced may be a prominent feature in tho character of our citizen soldiery and should adversity (which we hope nevor may) ever place any other Com pany in similar circumstances, we trust to be able to return the debt of gratitude we feol we owe. A correspondent of the Albany Evening Trantcript, who visited, among the hundreds of others, the Rev. Henry "Ward Beecher on New Year's Day, thus relates what he saw and experienced Beecher's residence is in Columbia street, directly upon Brooklyn Heights, commanding a full view of the 'lively world of New York' 'the great whirlpool' as he calls it, the shores of New Jersey in the distance, beyond the beautiful bay. It is a place eminently fitted, in my opinion, for the residence of one whose office is to lead men aside from the thorny and perplexing paths of business into those of more quiet contemplation and calm reflection. It is, at the same time, quiet and comparatively secluded. To this home he can retire to ponder over what he daily witnesses, and mold it into wise and practical lessons, or Btore them away in his brain as additions to big already great fund of knowledge of human nature.

Mr. Beecher is, of all men whom it has been my good fortune to become acquainted with, a great master of the secret springs of human nature. Indeed here lies a great portion of his power. "But to proceed. At his house in Columbia Btreet, I called on New Year's day, and had the pleasure of finding there, among many of his old friends, his venerable father, Dr.

Lyman Beecher, now far advanced in years, but still retaining his faculties, apparently undiminished. His eye is still bright and piercing as in years ago. It was a sight worthy to be remembered father and son one who has been, and the other who is, the ablest preacher of his day. The old gentleman is witty and full of conversation loves to dwell upon and recaU the deeds and struggles of days that are gone by. The interior of Mr.

Beecher's house is well and solidly furnished, and if remarkable for anything, it is for the large number of paintings and very rare and beautiful engravings that adom the walls of the parlor. This room, however, does not resemble the drawing rooms of the present day it has too much of the appearance of every day living, and is very unlike the cold, frigid air which usually characterizes parlors. His library is in a niche or corner ot this room it is a costly array (of books, carefully selected, which are mostly deposited in a very large case' ornamented at each upper corner by a finely stuffed buck's head, and neck, while over the centre is perched a wiae BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE OFFICE, 2 P.
