But Mrs. Rivers, the wife of a commercial man, whoso ii'come was fixed seven hundred per annum, might have so directed her affairs, with the greatest possible advantage to her husbaud's expenditure and her daughter's future welfare, since this young lady could not hope lor au alliance with any member of the peerage, or eveu a wealthy commoner of a high family.

But Mrs. Rivers and her daughter preferred aping the Duchess of'Oitl sehool, their fashionable modes, and even fancied that people mistook their Birmingham lacquer for Her Grace's massive gilding. A week or two after the conversation recorded, Miss Villiers was united to the man of her choice, and subsided down in a small neatly furnished house in a cheap locality, where the Rivers family would have been horrified to have ventured, aud where, for untold sums, they would not have been supposed to visit. When the acquaintances of our girlhood once cease, they rarely become renewed. Very wisely, Bessie Villiers, inBtead of marrying to please the particular set among whom she visited, she married to please herself! Many persons shook their heads at Bessie's marriage they said Mr.

Dims, dale, was fond of company, was inclined to bo gay and that a longer courtship would have been better, because there would have been an object for him to pursue to save, iu short, for his marriage. As it was, Arthur Dimsdale had saved very little money, and Bessie married without many things, which a half dozen friends told her were perfectly indispensable for a new married couple. 'Well! andia it really you, Bessie And what, in tlie name of goodness, have you done with yourself all this time Five well, no but four weeks at least it is, since we have hud the noDor of a visit from your This speech was finished with a grand mock courtesy from the speaker, Miss Isabella Rivers, a handsome young ladv, dressed in the very last fashion, in the richest silks and costliest lace and it was addressed to another young iroinaa of her own age, who a miuuto previously had been announced by Mrs. Rivers' page, tvtio w.is gorgeously bedizened in blue, and silver buttons. Bet Bie Villiers, the victor, beside her friend, would not possibly have attracted much notice ut first, she was by no means so distingue looking, and was dressed very quietly, thougb neatly. Her black yhm was not enlarged to inconvenience by crinoline, though a daintily worked petticoat just peeped from the skirt of her robe, a3 6he held it up to avoid the contact of eveu Mrs. Rivers' handsome morning room carpet.

A sweet and happy face, though not a very beautiful one, beamed beneath a modest straw bonnet, plaiuly but elegantly trimmed with violet colored velvet; perfectly fitting gloves and bonis finished tbis unremarkable torilet, if I except a black velvet inau tle and sable furs, which served to denote the winter season. 'I have been very busy, my dear said Miss Villiers, with a slight hesitation, and a color very perceptibly rioing through her pure pale skin. 'And so, indeed, has been your humble servant," said Isabella; bails, soirees, operas, weddings; 'What said Bessie, smiling, 'have you at last made up your mind tben 'To my weddiug Miss Rivers almost screamed. 'Good heavens, no Why, Frederick and I are not half rich enough yet. I say Frederick and but I mean Mr.

Bury for of course, every one knows, I have no money; don't tliey, continued this lively jounglady tappiug her mother under the chin a proceeding whien interfered with that matron's dignity materially, as dressed in a costly morning silk, she lounged with one of Mudie's volumes in her hand. JDon'i be foolish, her mother answered 'and pray don't tumble my collar so it is really very 'What is, ma, dear replies her daughter; 'that Btillfhang upon your hands Well, you know it iB not Fred's fault, because he wanted to arrange our marriage only last month, and you would not hear of 'Certainly the elder lady says, 'until Mr. Bury's prospects improve, and his income will enable him to keep a 'I was about to name to said Bessie Villiers, 'that I am going to be married on the seventeenth of next month. We think now there is every prospect of Mr. Dimsdale's income pro gres ing, and we have made up our minds not to make any iurtlier delay.

I shall be twenty one you she said, 'next week; my birth day is on the fourth, and Arthur is just two year3 older, and' 'And pray, my Mrs. Rivers broke in, 'what ma) if not an impertinent question what may be the income of Mr. Dimedate Most people would have thought this a very iiupvi uuciii 4ueDiiuu iuuccu. oie colored a little, but answered quietly 'three hundred a year, Mrs. Is it in an accent of astonishment which demands all those four notes of admiration to describe it.

'My deau'st Bessie (from Isabella) 'you are surely dreaming? or out of your mind; or laughing immensely terribly in 'Ido certainly wish to say that I love Mr. Dims dale verv says Bessie in a little tone of pique. 'If I did not, I Bhould be very wrong to marry himJ This mildly tempered shaft, perhaps, was aimed at Miss Rivers, who had been wavering so said evil report between her engaged lover and a certain gentleman considerably older than herself at any rate, Isabella received the inuendo (which became more so, from the emphasis with which, it was delivered rather than its words) wiih a long loud laugh the way, by the by, in wbich Mrs. Rivers and her daughter usually received anything like hints of reproof and which was doubly effective in at once expressing their scorn of report, and their utter contempt for the Mnter. 'You are quite Arcadian; my dear siid Isabella, when she had indulged her mirth, 'perhaps I might be.ter say Utopian, but eertaiuly I agree wiih you, it is much pleasanter to marry a person one does like, than any one to whom we have an aversion.

And that is the reason I intended waiting for interposed Miss Mr. Bury's income exceeds that of Mr. Dimsdale, and we can afford to marry one 'It doeB answered her friend, rather more seriously than before Frederick has live hundred ayear. But do you think we could keep house on such a wretched sum, my dear girl The whole thing would be out of the question even mamma says so, don't you mother, dear? although she wants so very much to get rid of me, and hear me called Mrs. Somebody instead of Miss 'Out of the question? Of her mother answered loftily; 'and I cannot my dear Miss Villiers imagine how your parents can permit you to sacrifice yourself and descend from the enjoyments of a comfortable and elegant home into 'Poverty said Bessie, smiling.

'My dear, yes. What can you possibly do with three hundred a year 'At said Miss it is, in careful hands, a competency; and together we can mike it go further tliau living singly; for Mr. Dimsdale candidly acknowledges that, as a single man, he can save very little, and wants beside the comfort of a house. Papa, you said Bessie, blushing, 'takes great interest in all social subjects and discusses tbeni freely among us all; and he declares this system of waitiug till people are rich, now in vogue among the genteel middle class people is produeiive of great Mrs. Rivers tossed her head 'Tnose are she said, 'best left alone; at any rate, with us they are kept entirely out of 'No man" said Isabella, in the tone of one who had definitely made up her mind on the subject 'no man has a right to marry unless he support a wife in tbe way she has been brought up." 'And there again lies the fault, papa exclaimed Bessie, 'middle class families briug up their daughters to know nothing whatever of domestic economy; to acquire showy accomplishments, which are not yet perfected enough to gain iliem bread, if accideutor misfortune forces them to earn their own subsistence: to dress expensively, to frequent parties, and to keep a fixed dc i initiation not to marry until they can, as wives, be suppi tried in the same reckless system in which they nave as daughters before existed." Mrs.

Rivers, derisively. 'Upon my word, Mi Villiers, you have retalued your father's lectin well I wish, Isabella, vou would remember what I told yon, in the like maimer. And pray my dear Bessie" patronizingly "tell ns your qua. ifioyiiorjs for keeping liouW on tin; sinaiU. pi'Soinle income I ever Heard of people being desK enough to marry 'One the lirst and best principle, 1 answered Miss Villiers gravely 'will be to keep our expenses within thai income.

I sh.ill regulate them Weekly, take a small bouse just sufficient tor decent and respectable comfort have only one. servant, and superintend every domestic iK'cnpatiun mvself, wbich I am Uappv to say will be in my power, because; we have always assisted my in those said Mrs. Rivers, being obliged to make some observation, and not kuowin" what other to offer. 'Papa's ineomo, my dcarMrs. continued Bessie, 'is, as you know, a very handsome one but even he owns that if my motber had not exercised a strict economy and been prudent in her domestic expenditure, he could not have done as he that is, provided by a life assurance, handsomely for her in the event of his death, aud put by something lor his daughters, as marriage portions, orto help them on if they remain single.

Every' one of us," Bessie pursued a flush of honest ptide coming into her sweet, face 'h is followed some pui uil, by which, if compelled, wo could earn our own living. We have never cal culstca on marriages as a meaus of livelihood, norOti I believe any of us are likely to sink into repining, helpless beings, if we are destined to remain siuiilo.
