Since the advent of lower temperature and appearance of more asreeable weather conditions generally, there has been great improvement in the business done at Wallabout and other markets.

For the last three days commission dealers have readily cleared up consignments of general produce and in many instances tit advancing figures. Fruits have been in active demand, peaches taking the lead. On Friday they scored good increases in value and yesterday they sold at fully 25 per cent, higher rates than on the preceding day. There is a growing impression that peaches will be short, especially choice late varieties, and housekeepers and others are endeavoring to fill their requirements for preserving, pickling, early, in the endeavor to avoid the higher prices which it is believed will rule later. It is something of a surprise to conservative people to see Union Ferry stock selling for less than Brooklyn Ferry shares.

The former a dividend and is said to fee earning more than 2 per cent. The latter pays no dividend and the reports given out by people supposed to know are that its earnings on the etock are not more than 2 per cent. While these two stocks arc selling about 40 the shares of the New York and East River Ferry Company, on which 5 per cent, dividends are paid, is selling at about 71. This company, although smaller than the other two, is by long odds in the strongest position. There is no chance of opposition, there is little likelihood of a competing bridge, it operates between Astoria, which is a growing section, and Ninety third street, Manhattan.

vJt has always earned more than its dividend and in the treasury of the company is a goodly surplus. During the last year it has, with the exception of a few days, shown an increase in earnings over the corresponding days of the previous year. As a dividend payer, its record has been as follows: In 1S95, 3 per in 1S96, 4 per in 1S97, 4 per cent; in this year, it is paying at the rate of 5 per cent. JOHNSON, iiiuiinns gcau 1. i uo.n week. The strength of the money market has been counteracted to some extent by the decline in the foreign exchange market and consequent engagements of gold for import. Much bear balk has been heard, based on the apprehension of stringency of money and the iow state of the surplus reserves, indicated by to day's bank statement, at first sight gave reason for this apprehension. The fact must not be lost sight of, though, that the banks have actually more cash than they had a year ago by $3,000,000 and chey have $70, 000,000 more than they had in the same week in Liquidation has in the past fortnight reduced considerably the aggregate of loans and there seems no reason to look for a money rate that will be onerous.

This company, like all other well managed railroads, runs during the busy times of the day what are known as "swings." That is, cars which make a few trips in the morning and then perhaps a few more in the evening.

Men running these cars are paid for the time they work and do not make as mucb as those who have regular trips. has been the practice of this company to give to its regular men the privilege of running the swing trips If they wished in addition to their regular run. This frequently kept fa em steadily at work lor a good many more than the ten hours, "Whieu the law says a railroad motorman or conductor can work. This law. however, has reference, it is generally understood, to forcing men to work more than ten hours.

The Brooklyn Heights Company has not done that and has permitted its men to do so only when 'they desired. President Rossiter says the employes of the company are a thoroughly contented lot of men and that there is no fear of any labor troubles. The Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company reports for July: ISM. 1S97. Chances.

89f 04 llav Stale (as li 4 boys, with a primary department for boys i B'klyn rnton INSURANCE COMPANY PHENIX 8S3D Surplus $279, 770 The large increase in the "other Income" Item is due to the sale of the Brooklyn, Queens County and Suburbaai bonds which, "were owned by the Transit Company. The Kings County Traction Company advertised that all claims must be presented to it on or before September G. Since that date circulars have been sent out announcing tihat the company has sold all its assets and is now out of existence. It informs people that after paying all the debts of the company there is left a dividend for the stockholders of $44.58 a share and that that amount will be paid any stockholder on the delivery of his holdings. This probably means that it will be a short time now until the new securities of the Nassau Railroad will be issued.

The Nassau Company was the purchaser of the Kings County Company's assets. The new Nassau preferred stock is quoted at C5 bid and the new 4 per cent, bonds at 90 when issued. The Walker Manufacturng Company, it is reported, has signed a $300,000 contract to iurnish the Brooklyn Heights Railroad with 600 motors. It is also said that within a short time the Heights company will sign a contract for enough new rails to finish the work of re equipping the system with the latest kind of girder rail. The annual meeting of the Union Ferry Company stockholders will be held on October 4, at 30 Broad street, Manhattan, at noon.

The annual report of the Van Brunt street and Brie Basin Railroad Company, as filed with the railroad commissioners for the year ending June 30, lost, shows as follows: 169S. 1S07.
