JOSEPH BENJAMIN. City Clerk. A LECTURE FOR CHRISTMAS TIME Mr. Ingersoll Speaks on the Earliest Images and. Pictures of Christ.

A lecture appropriate to the Christmas season was delivered by the Rev. William H. Ingersoll before tho members ot the Brooklyn Institute on Christmas eve upon the "Earliest Images and Pictures of ChTlst and Their Traditions." There is one lace that has been looking upon the world lor eighteen hundred years," said Mr. Ingersoll, "a solemn and fascinating face, that is winning the love of all men, a face that we shall see again; it is the Son Man; it Is the Christ of God. Art has always found its highest enthusiasm, its su premest study In Imaging the human lineaments of our Lord, as He walked the earth and went about doing good, saying blessed words and inviting all men to follow Him, introducing tbem to the eternal life." Mr.

Ingersoll road the traditional descriptions of Christ, beginning with the "Act of Pllati," a document traditionally ascribed to Pontius Pilate, wherein he is said to have reported to the Roman senate what he knew about Christ and what had been done to Him. The next document described was that of Bishop John of Damascus in the eighth century, wherein the person of Christ Is described with great enthusiasm. Next is a letter of one Publlus Lentulus, governor of Syria, attributed to the time of Titus, but not discovered until the eleventh century. As no Lentulus was in Palestine for sixty years preceding the time of Christ's appearance on earth, this document appears to have email foundation. Finally the tradition of Nicephorus, a Greek historian of the tenth century, sums up the other traditions referred to.

The lecturer next took up the traditional pictures of Christ, beginning with the Abgarus picture, whereof the story is told that Christ miraculously impressed the outlines of His face on a napkin and sent It to Abgarus, king of Armenia, for the cure of a leper. Many variations of this story are told. Then comes the Veronica picture, which is said to have been impressed on the sudarlum or headdress of a woman in the house in front of which Jesus fell on his way to the cross. Mr. Ingersoll also spoke of the crucifix ascribed to Nicodemus, who Is said to have been a wood carver and to have pictured the features of the Lord, presenting them to Gamaliel, the tutor of St.

Paul. This crucifix is now in the cathedral at Lucca. In the treasury of tfce Vatican there is a mask face, partly covered by a golden nimbus, said to have been drawn by St. Peter and given by him to Prudentia, the daughter of the Roman with whom he lodged. There is also a mask face In the Church of St.

Veits, at Prague, Bohemia The emerald vernicle is a very Btriking and well known Ideal of Christ, presenting a very sharp and beautiful Greek profllo. The story goes that the emperor Tiberius had it carved upon an emerald. The original has been lost, but there are a number of pictures having a family resemblance, so that there seems no doubt that some such work of art originally existed. Ir. Ingersoll concluded his interesting lect ure by several views of what are called historic subjects, being representations of Christ as seen In the Gnostic carvings, in the Byzantine ideals, and the later Italian pictures.

The lecture was well Illustrated, and was received with marked favor. Faurot, Oliver Fisher, L. Harry Firth, Albert Fisher. Wm. H.
