GRANT, OUR GREAT HERO, IS RESTING. Sono Words I and muslo composed by K. V. Millard, Santa Cruz, July 30, 1885. To be sung to-morrow at the Grant Memorial exercises: Our country's great hero Is resting In that land where Is warring no more.

Ho has crossed o'er death's dark, surging billows, And is safe on the far, sunny shore. We know that for him is no waking, Till the bugle shall call from their rest All brave warriors, where'er they are sleeping, Gently sleeping on kind Nature's breast. The fierce, screaming shell, and the rattle Of musketry, ne'er greets him there. He has seen his last light, and its horrors From his sight God will evermore spare. He did all he could for his country; He was kind, be was true, he was brave.

He betrayed notja trust in bis keeping, God hath raised him "our country to save." Vhorus Oh, deep is the sorrow o'er all our land, For our dear chieftain is gone; The laurel twined in the victor's crown Will turn to an olive wreath Id heaven. A TRIP TO SANTA CRUZ. Los Gatos is reached and the ascent begun. The scenery now commenced to be very fine, and continued to Improve and grow more grand as the train advanced. The road is built along tho edg-s of wild ravines, dizzy precipices, and over aeomingly bottomless chasms, and in some places straight through abutting peaks which it would have been Impossible to go around.

There are, on this road, no less than eight tunnels, two of which seemed to be several miles in length, and through which it took considerable time to pass. On going through th 3 latter, the car lamps were lighted, and ail windows closed to keep out the smoke and cinders which came from the engine. After a ride of four hours the train halted at our destination, Santa Cruz, We arose with the sun and took a stroll about the town, finding it a delightful little burg. It is the county seat of Santa Cruz county, aud has a population of about 5,000, which, in the summer time is greatly increased by large numbers of people who go there for weeks and months, to enjoy the beautiful climate and surf-bath-lug. The town Is beautifully located, being nestled at the foot of the mountains with the ocean at its feet.

The streets are wide and well paved and are kept free from dust and dirt, being swept daily. There are many handsome and attractive residences of large size, aud the smaller ones are marvels of neatness aud cleanliness, all provided with pretty little frout gardens of beautiful flowers. During the mornings and afternoons the beach is the place of attraction, and every one who can, goes there to bathe, and get tossed iu the breakers, or sit ou the sand and watch others. The Santa Cruz beach is the finest on the coast, and iu the suinmor season is covered with hundreds of bathers, the ladies, seemingly, outnumbering the men. The distance from the town center to the beach is about one mile, which cau be traversed on foot, in busses or in the street cars which makes regular I rips throughout the entire day.

There are many hotels. A trip to Santa Cruz would, of course, be incomplete without a visit to the Big Trees, so we accordingly visited the latter. Hie grove is situated up in the mountains about five miles from the town, and can be either reached by train or vehicle. We spent several hours viewing the great giants, standing straight up hundreds of feet, seemingly reaching into the clouds, in their primeval grandeur. Benicia Era.

A Petrified Giant. Victoria (B. C), August 5th. The body of a petrified giant has been found by two farmers who were sinking a well ten miles from town. Its appearance closely resembles that of a human being.

Tho head has the appearance of having been scalped. The material is as hard as flint and the arms and logs are broken short off. The veins and ribs are plainly traced. A pnrty has gone out for the legs, arms and hands, which lie in a hole. The man when alive must have been about twelve feet high.

This answers to the description of the alleged petrifaction found near Lagttna a few months ago. Chances for lleallb and Disease. Man is dependent upon his surroundings for the necessities of life. Air and water are necessities of life, but impure air and impure water are most prolific sources of disease. Food Is also a necessity of life, but numerous diseases are traceable to both a lack of necessary food and an over-Indulgence in special kinds of nourishment.

Besides these external sources of disease there are other more subtle and Internal causes. Kadi iudi-vldu. Inherits from his parents a certain physical constitution. Each person therefore derives his chances of health or d's-ease from a double source, namely his Inherited constitution and his surroundings In life. Sanitary science devotes a'-teution to our surroundings.

Medical science seeks to overcome the constitutional or Inherited weakness by medicines that supply what is wanting in the system. Do Haven's Dyspepsia Cure sup-piles that which is wanting to ensuro proper assimilation and digestion of food. Try it. F'ree sample bottles at J. O.

Iu Intermittent unit remittent fever, dumb ague and ague cake, the liver Is always seriously atlected, and the blood contaminated with bile. Ono of the chief reasons why Hostetler's Stomach Bitters is such a sure defense against chills and fever and every form of malarial disease, is, that it does away with liability to the disease, by reformiug lrregulurity oi the biliary organ in advance of the arrival of the season when tho disease Is prevalent.

There is no finer fortifying preparative for those about visiting or emigrating to a locality where the miasnia-laini exists. There Is no certain immunity from disease In an endemic or epidemic form, to be secured by the uso of tho average tonics und antl-spasniodlcs. Hut where quinine falls the Bitters succeeds both in preventing and curing. Moreover.lt. removes every vestige of dyspepsia, and overcomes constipation, rheumatism, inactivity of the kidneys and bladder, and tranquillzes and strengthens the nervous system..
